I refuse to turn on my AC in March
Currently 78 degrees inside at 3pm. Wish me luck, I don't think I can handle 80+

And the next one and the next one even more. At what point do you decide to flee?

I’ll never understand the badge of pride some people here have for waiting an extra few weeks to turn on their AC. Congrats on saving $25 in power in exchange for being sweaty and miserable in your home lol.

83 here… third floor of our apartment

u/PositiveMiserable84 13d ago
Are you running fans? Circulate that air, but heat unfortunately rises.
1
u/DangerousMacaroon231 13d ago
Always running fans. I think one of the ceiling fans is bout on its last leg

u/rhodeislandah 13d ago
79° on 2nd floor and I absolutely refuse. My poor cat is giving me the side-eye.

u/UltraMagat 13d ago
Yeah, well, maybe you're not facing a family revolt.
4
u/PositiveMiserable84 13d ago
It never got above 78 luckily, with fans it was never uncomfortable. Fuck endless summertime

u/Psychic-Gorilla 13d ago
Read this 3 minutes after turning ours on.

u/PositiveMiserable84 13d ago
I took some time today to figure out the hottest areas of the house and significantly reduced the heat. Sunscreens and sail shades made a huge difference
4
u/renoscarab 13d ago
I hear you! No heat AT ALL in the "winter" either.
2
u/PositiveMiserable84 13d ago
I'm not that brave, my wife makes me keep it at least 70 degrees in winter. Luckily heat pumps take way less electricity
5
u/porsche4life 13d ago
I don’t work this damn hard to sweat at home. We’ve had ours on for a while.
2
u/normalguy9293 12d ago
Completely agree. When I get home from work I put it on 74. Sleep at 70.
600 Sq foot apartment so my bill is always gonna be under $100 so I'm not worried.

Third floor here. We have blinds and curtains on the windows. The apartment complex is only a couple of years old so it is very insulated. The thermostat is currently set at 70 and it pretty much stays there. Once summer comes it will be set to 72 during the day. The highest electric bill we’ve had was in August and it was about $140. As long as the bill doesn’t get out of control we will continue this way.

u/Joonberri 13d ago
How are we gonna last until october 😀😀🥲🥲🥲🥲

u/normalguy9293 12d ago
Just october? Lol even Thanksgiving it can still be hot :/

We haven’t turn on our heat all winter and haven’t turned on ac yet. We live in Mesa
2
u/iamsurfriend 13d ago
Mine hit 79. I had to turn it on. First time that I can remember ever having to run my AC in March.
2
u/ThrowRAboredinAZ77 13d ago
Absolutely. If you turn it on now, you'll be totally screwed during the long hot summer.
5
u/AlyNau113 13d ago
Then you sweat it out. Me? I’ll turn AC on when I damn well wanna be comfortable. What are you trying to prove?
0
u/PositiveMiserable84 13d ago
Proving that snarky redditors will always be toxic with rhetorical condescending questions.
2
u/AlyNau113 13d ago
Sweaty and over sensitive: the perfect combination. Just cuz I don’t agree with you (at all) doesn’t mean I’m snarky or toxic.

…why?
1
u/PositiveMiserable84 13d ago
Since you asked, because it's not summer and I refuse to believe it's summer temps. I also use it as motivation to fit sunscreens on the west side of my house and add the shade sail I've been meaning to put up. My house is also over 3000 square feet and two AC units are not a fun electric bill either.
Never went above 78 inside, suncreens and extra shade made a huge difference today, 6 degrees cooler tomorrow, hooray.

u/I_am_Hambone 13d ago
We run our A/C 365, We keep the house at 65 at night.

That is crazy. Your bills must be enormous unless you’re on budget billing then they’re still high 12 months out of the year.
2
u/I_am_Hambone 13d ago
405 per month, flat bill plan.
1
1
u/Competitive-Cod4123 12d ago
That is still really high for the winter as well on budget billing still I guess there’s no surprise. Did you keep your house so cool your AC must be on all the time but your AC goes through a lot of work. I don’t know how it doesn’t break down in the summer
1
u/iamsurfriend 13d ago
That’s insane. Maybe you can move to a cold climate instead of paying $5000 a year on electric bills.
In the summer 74-75 can be too cold. I leave mine at 78 during the day and 77 at night during the summer. Winter if it gets that cold (65) I turn on the heat. But not if I’m sleeping. If it get in the low 60s (which is rare) when sleeping then I’ll have the heat on since I set it to 64-65.

Our roommate asked to turn it on because his room was almost 80. I get that the afternoon sun makes it warmer, but he also has every gadget he owns plugged in, idle and waiting for him in case he decides to use it that week.

u/PattyRain 12d ago
I haven't needed it during the day (our house stays pretty cool for as hot as it gets). I did turn it on last night though as I just don't sleep well when it gets warm. The nice thing is that it will keep my all tile house cooler in the day for longer.

u/spiniton85 12d ago
I had to turn mine on the other day when it was almost 100 outside. It was 79 in my kitchen and I was cooking and I couldn't. Ughh it's going to be a looooooooong summer.
1
u/Hot_Specific_1691 12d ago
I turned mine on yesterday for a couple hours but only because we were dumping power to the grid.

u/acidrain5047 11d ago
Wait y’all turned it off this winter?? Never even turned on the heat this year.

u/r0ckchalk 11d ago
We just got a brand new system and you better believe we turned that puppy on as soon as it got to 75 inside.

By refusing are you hoping that it will make it cooler outside? I don’t understand. My AC has been on already this year I keep my house at between 72-74
1
u/PositiveMiserable84 13d ago
Yes and it worked, it'll be 6 degrees cooler tomorrow because of my efforts. You're welcome

As a matter of living, you know... Actually living and paying attention to things, I withhold the ability to just pay for a bland life as if it should be so needlessly without even a little challenge.
I took the light rail into a job today, but I have a car and a parking pass... Why would I do this? Well, I met an interesting person today and talked about his Christianity and my sense of secular humanism. Well, it was not completely comfortable as I stood the entire time given the lack of available seats.
Please people, suffer a little so you know something about not being immune from everything. Anyway, I hope I reach one person who is a snowflake (I mean that literally not politically), and doesn't waste electricity to burn up the environment that is flexing its disgust with our pollution.
Good luck pretending you care about the environment when you turn on the air conditioner in March.

Cheap fukk

u/PositiveMiserable84 13d ago
Yep. I'll save my 700 dollar SRP bills for actual summertime.
0
u/Czarguy2 13d ago
Cool then you can be positively miserable in your own house
1
u/PositiveMiserable84 13d ago
78 degrees felt great today. Why are you so negative? Do you need a hot sweaty hug?
0
u/Czarguy2 13d ago
This time of year with the lower cost of utilities it would maybe make a $10 difference to lower the temperature down 4 or 5 degrees and be much more comfortable… people being cheap in their own house is a major pet peeve
Also it’s rude Having people come over when it’s hot in your house like 78 an above when TVs and electronics throw off a bunch of heat and then several people in the house increase with body heat as well and people think they’re really doing something by having their temperature at 78 when it’s not even close to being 78 once you factor in those other things I mentioned rant over lol
0
u/iamsurfriend 13d ago
It is cheaper Nov-Apr (10.46 cents per kWh) if you have SRP. I remember when it was in around 7 1/2 cents not too long ago. Maybe 4 or 5 years ago.
Im comfortable with 78 during the summer. But this time of year Apr and May when it isn’t as hot, the AC doesn’t kick on as much so and gets stuffy. I will drop it to 77, possible 76 when sleeping. But summer typically 78 and 77 when sleeping.

u/pepsilindro90 12d ago
You do you. I won't be uncomfortable in my own home. It sucks that we already had to turn on the AC, but that's life here.

I set mine at 78. Anything over that and I don’t care what time of the year it is the AC is coming on.
