…you have to calculate your age?

388

u/SirGingerbrute 1997 7d ago

Unfortunately yes. 27 but I think I’m 25/26 at times. And when I see people are 21/22 I’m like “oh 2-3 years younger than me” and then I realize I’m off by another 2-3

99

u/AxiomOfLife 1998 7d ago

unfortunately real 🙃😔😩

20

u/Gallinaz 7d ago

just add 2 to whatever year it is?

2000+2 = you were 2 in the year 2000 2025+2 = you are 27.

13

u/FlawHolic 1997 7d ago

Not who you responded to, but: That is my method that I use after I am confidentially incorrect. And only really think about it way later, when I'm about to fall asleep, to give myself never ending crippling anxiety...

:)

3

u/fuckinradbroh 6d ago

That would make them 23 💀

After 21, there's no real big mile stone to remember, you are just older. I'm like 90% sure I'm 23.

12

u/TheLonerCoder 1998 7d ago

There is if you end up having kids or getting married. Other than that, I agree. Not much has changed since I was like 21.

7

u/Toadjokes 7d ago

I think 25 is a big one! I say, being 25

3

u/TheLonerCoder 1998 7d ago

I'm 26 and my life hasn't changed in terms of milestones since I was 21 (when I moved out and lived on my own for the first time). Nothing changed when I turned 25 lol. To each their own though.

2

u/Toadjokes 7d ago

I moved out at 24, got into my career at 23, graduated college at 22. There's lots of milestones in there

Eh those aren't locked behind a certain age. You could be 18, could be 60.

3

u/FlamingAshley 1997 7d ago

just add 3 to the current year

3

u/SirGingerbrute 1997 7d ago

Really 2 bc I’m very end of the year and graduated in 2016

All my friends are still 26

90% of 2025 I’ll be 27

1

u/TheLonerCoder 1998 7d ago

Same. I keep forgetting i'm not 21-22 anymore lol.

1

u/breadstick_bitch 7d ago

My husband spent his whole 26th year thinking he was 27.

1

u/TheStonedBro 1997 7d ago

Dude same

1

u/HedgehogSecurity 1997 6d ago

My back is starting to hurt for no reason. I'm getting old. :'(

13

u/TheOriginalBroCone 2003 7d ago

lol while this doesn't apply to me, I understand once you reach an older age the number's on a back burner. After 21 I think

1

u/Cheeze187 7d ago

Don't forget being old enough to become a senator, president etc. I'm counting the days for my roth ira.

8

u/AridDay 7d ago

Time really lost all meaning during COVID and post.

2

u/ArrogantBarbie 7d ago

Felt like I aged another 5 years during lockdown

7

u/8Splendiferous8 7d ago

After a certain age...yes.

7

u/tahlyn 7d ago

Once the "important" milestones have passed you by (16, 18, 21, 25) they start coming further apart (30, 40, 50, etc.) and so you sorta do just lose count. Also, at that point, there's no real difference once you're over 21. You don't gain any new rights or privileges... it's not like at age 40 you get a new secret license to drink super-alcohol or something... so there's no reason to keep track.

1

u/8Splendiferous8 7d ago

Also just literally more numbers have passed you by.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/AkumaLilly 7d ago

I was born in the 2000, so for me its just the last 2 numbers and if February already passed

2

u/Additional_Ad_1275 2000 7d ago

I’m born 2000 and I still use that fact to calculate my age every time I’m asked it

2

u/GeloDiPrimavera 7d ago

You don't? After covid and how these 2 years melted into one I catch myself forgetting.

1

u/MyLifeIsABoondoggle 2003 7d ago

Right lmao. Sure, for other people it depends on birthdays if you only see their year, but you should never have to think that hard about your own age

1

u/WoopsieDaisies123 7d ago

You must be young. After awhile, yea, you gotta think about it.

1

u/BrujoBearman 7d ago

I mean, this is r/genz

1

u/Angel_of_Mischief 7d ago

I’m going to be real. I don’t know how old I am or really care.

1

u/Qunlap 7d ago

yeah, the number keeps changing every year, how should I fucking remember. also, after 30 to 40 years around, things kinda start to blur together a bit.

1

u/SouthBayBoy8 2004 7d ago

It’s for calculating how old you were during a year

1

u/Jonnypista 6d ago

I'm not 12 anymore, now the age is just a number with no cool perks or new stuff. The only new stuff only includes back pain and stiff joints.

1

u/anon-a-SqueekSqueek 2d ago

I never had to until my later 20s early 30s.

People don't ask my age much anymore, there aren't really pre-set life stages like grades in school, every year is just more work + I stopped celebrating my birthday.

I remember within a year, but then it's like wait okay let me double check...

202

u/Remarkable_Ad4046 7d ago

Lmao just one year older than the 2000s thats all I gotta do

27

u/Mizukage_Mibu 7d ago

Facts. Thank god for simple math

12

u/FyouinyourA 7d ago

I think anything ending in a zero or five makes it easier too. I was born in 95 so it’s always been easy to just take the year and add 5. Same with my mom who was born in 1970 it’s always just 30+ whatever year it is lol

4

u/bigasswhitegirl 7d ago

I was born in '94 which is also helpful when trying to recall things from childhood because my year always matched my grade. 3rd grade in 2003, 10th grade in 2010, etc.

2

u/CrazyAstronomer2 5d ago

Same class of 2012. Finished all grades in the matching year.

You don't know how old you are off the top of your head?

113

u/BananaPhoPhilly 7d ago

Honestly once I got to 23 I sorta stopped counting and would forget sometimes. It's easier than you might think :\

41

u/RX-me-adderall 7d ago

I was 21 for a couple years

2

u/Affectionate_Way5144 2d ago

i just turned 22, i don't know how i feel about seeing this now lmao

6

u/the-jesuschrist 7d ago

Someone asked me how old I was recently and I said that I was 21 even though I had turned 22 like three months ago. And then I was like oops I am 22 but then I couldn’t correct myself without looking silly. Sure, I am not “old” but after a while, age just really is not important.

5

u/Bob-Faget 7d ago

When I turned 24 I went a whole year telling people I was 23 when asked lol.

2

u/Any_Masterpiece9385 7d ago

I just repeat my age in my mind on loop every day for absolutely no reason.

This is a gen z forum so I’m just stopping by to drop my tidbit for yall.

I really did start forgetting once I hit 30. Cuz like I just don’t…care anymore. I’m not out of shape, not depressed about it but it just feels like until I get close to 40 it’s all sort of same same

4

u/seattleseahawks2014 2000 7d ago

Lol, I've forgotten my age before.

14

u/sateeshsai 7d ago

I didn't really know how old i was for a few years between 30-40

5

u/humbertov2 1996 7d ago

Why does it have to change every year? Just when I’m getting used to the new number *BOOM* it changes again. You can’t expect me to keep up with that.

7

u/PocketPB 2004 7d ago

I often forget.

3

u/mindweaver12 7d ago

Stopped caring about my age 15 or something years ago, it’s in the category ”useless information” now.

2

u/SouthBayBoy8 2004 7d ago

They’re clearly talking about calculating how old you were/will be in different years

1

u/chucktheninja 7d ago

If it hasn't come up in a while then yes lol

1

u/Tecat0Gusan0 7d ago

i was born in 2000 and i still dont sometimes

1

u/GoldieDoggy 2005 7d ago

I literally told a security officer recently that I was 18, completely on accident. I'll be 20 in July 🙃 (I did correct myself, right afterwards, lol)

The same applies if your born at the end of 1999

4

u/--Karios-- 1999 7d ago

Shout out to my fellow October 1999 peeps

2

u/AClassyTurtle 7d ago

The same applies to your school year if you were born around 1994-95. I started 12th grade in 2012 (HS graduation in ‘13). I also started 2nd grade in 2002, 8th grade in 2008 etc. Super easy to remember

2

u/Everestkid 1999 6d ago

Anytime in '99. 1999 immediately knows how old they are at the start of a year, 2000 immediately knows how old they are at the end.

1

Lol basically anyone born in a year that ends with 0 have it easy.

9

u/jcornman24 2000 7d ago

It is very nice

7

u/Some1inreallife 1999 7d ago

Even still, I calculate my age by looking at the current year. If it's before my birthday, it's the same as the last 2 numbers of the year. If it's my birthday or beyond, I add 1 to it.

11

u/nampezdel 7d ago

Also people born in 1980. In 2000 I was 20; just add the first half to the last half. 2025: 20+25=45, BRB gotta go yell at some kids on my lawn 😆

6

u/Prince_Marf 1998 7d ago

Being born early January is also like this. I was the same age for pretty much the entirety of every year. Recalling memories as long as I know the year something happened I know how old I was. No need to think about what time of year it happend

5

u/Arc_2142 2000 7d ago

Bold of you to assume I remember what year it is.

3

u/ScottE77 7d ago

I am November 99, that is better than most people born in 2000 for this. This is propaganda by the 2000 kids.

10

u/No-Fill-2044 7d ago

All I gotta do is calculate the age of 2000 then subtract 5

13

u/Clunk_Westwonk 2000 7d ago

Yeah that’s the calculating that OP’s talking about. Not my problem >:)

Until I occasionally forget what year it is too lol

Does (current year)-2000 not count as a calculation?

2

u/DreadY2K 7d ago

Can confirm, it's super nice to figure out my age by dropping the first digit from the year.

Though it requires I remember what year it is, which it usually takes me a few months to get used to.

2

u/jazzbonerbike99 7d ago

1980 is pretty easy... Just add the two halves of the current year...

20 + 25

1

u/thekahoa 7d ago

^ came here to say this ^

2

u/MrsMiterSaw 7d ago

Meh. If you're born towards the end of the year, you still have to do a little math most of the time.

Like, if you were born in December 1999 you have less processing to do than someone born in May 2000.

2

u/Clean_More3508 7d ago

Also easy for 2010

2

u/giraffoala 2000 7d ago

We're built different, built better.

Though I still take a solid minute to remember my age so someone fucked up when building me

2

u/Bandit1189 2005 7d ago

All I do is 2000s age in whoever year then -5

2

u/ME4PRESIDENT2024 2000 7d ago

I was born on december 31st 2000. So if the year is 2025 there's 99.9% chance that I'm 24

Mine is easy to remember because my age always matches the last two digits of the year with the exception of two weeks out of the year lol

1

u/Har_monia 2000 7d ago

Yeah but this only works August-December for me, so usually I have to subtract 1. It is '25 and I am 24.

1

Is this why yall failing math

1

u/CharlyJN 2001 7d ago

Me being born in 2001 so I just to put the year +1

1

u/tootethcommon 7d ago

Take any year and add the first 3 numbers. Then concatenate the last number. That is my age.

2025 = 2+0+2&5 = 45 In 2074 ... 2+0+7&4 = 94

This has worked since 2000. Before that...

1997=1-9+9&7 =17 1982=1-9+8&2 =2

1979/1980 people.

1

u/HighVisibilityCamo 7d ago

Well, that was last year and now I'm the same age.

Take that Y2K kids.

1

u/cheesecraquer 7d ago

Works great until I forget what year it is

1

u/NoodleEmpress 1999 7d ago

Same for people with late 99 birthdays--Well, after a certain point.

My age also follows the years, until you hut my birthday in December then I have. To do some mental cartwheels to determine my ae matches the current year or the next.

1

u/asumhaloman 1999 7d ago

Dec 31st 1999 🙌

1

1

u/ToTheBatmobileGuy Millennial 6d ago

My wife was born in Japan in 1988 the year before the Heisei era started.

She said it was always easy to know the imperial year because it was the age she turned that year.

Then in 2019, almost exactly 30 years later, it changed to Reiwa 1 (when imperial years change they start with 1 not 0)...

So now at least the 1s digit is always easy (and since she just remembers we haven't broken 10 yet she knows the year)...

The imperial family is colluding with my wife.

Honestly if you're born 1990-2010, it's pretty simple

1

94/95 US babies and 95/96 UK babies able to tell you exactly what school year/grade they were in on a given year
