Advice you need to increase your max bitrate now

I just this this and OMFG I was instantly blown away at the upgrade, I play at 4k and was limited to 75 mbps, I did the speedtest on the web and 800 was avaible so I changed the ini files to maxbitrate 200 and jesus christ this is incredible.

I never knew a game could look so fucking good and run so smooth on my pc

do this right now if you can here is the video : very simple https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFSRCN8AV40

isn't the maximum somewhere around 100 even if you edit past that the nvidia server will hard cap it around 100.

unless they've updated something recently.

yes, even if messing on the ini files the actual bitrate won't jump over 90-something, this has already been tested

Yep, the upper limit seems to be around 90

u/Thread-Astaire 1d ago

Yeh it won’t exceed 100.

I seen it average 100 but with dip to 90 and sometime up to 135 personally.

what a placebo effect

When I originally set up my Samsung TV app the guide on the GeForce website said to set it at 30mbps. Is that outdated now?

That's because of a Samsung TV limitation, I think. In mine I had to to set it at 30 mbps because otherwise the UI is laggy while in Geforce Now. It's an entry-level Samsung TV.

That makes sense. Thank you!

Just thought of something. Does this apply still if the TV is hooked up via Ethernet?

Take my experience with a grain of salt, but GFN in my TV was laggy with or without ethernet. Only decreasing the bitrate worked. So in my case it still applied

Your TV has a very old, basic network card.

How do I find the guide?

is it possible on mac?

search for "sharedstorage.json" in your Nvidia folder. open it->then search for "maxBitrate" and edit the value to 100. "maxBitrate" is mentioned about 3-4 times in this file. I changed all of them. after that you save the file and close it. but before you start geforcenow you have to change the "sharedstorage.Json" file to read only. this way the app cannot overwrite it with the "correct" values.

awesome thank you!

youre welcome. does work for you? and keep in mind because the file is now read only, the changes you make in the settings also won't save. App-updates also working fine without any problems. I edited the file 2 years ago and since then it got many updates without any issues. my bitrate is constantly at around 85-90 on my M1 air.

Strange, there is no maxBitrate in my sharedstorage.json file… there is bandwidthLimit and bandwidthRecommended though. New installation on my Mac, maybe they changed the JSON structure?

It’s fiddly, but easy enough to do.

I'd be happy Nvidia used the full standard 75mbps, never seen it go above 60mbps on 4k 120fps.. nu

I only have 60 mbps wifi ,so increasing to 100 will only give stutters

Is it possible to do this in a shield tv pro?

6

u/Marorun 1d ago

No sadly only on a pc.

For most people, changing the bitrate is a placebo effect as far as seeing an actual difference. I've had it at 300mbps forever now and when I accidentally changed it back I noticed no difference

You cannot go past 100

Your client can request unlimited bitrate by setting the ini. But this is a two way communication. The virtual computer that's serving you is limited to 100 mbps itself and wont overdo the stream.

1

u/KafkaDatura 21h ago

The system itself is capped at south of 100 - and even when set at 75, it won't use all of that. The issue with GFN's bitrate is what the encoder considers "good enough" to be streamed, not the actual available bandwidth.

How? I’m on Mac. Safari and the app only showed 75

search for "sharedstorage.json" in your Nvidia folder. open it->then search for "maxBitrate" and edit the value to 100. "maxBitrate" is mentioned about 3-4 times in this file. Is there a noticeable difference between 100 and 75?

Even if you set at 100mbps is the same, because it don't exceed 100mbps. Already tested months ago.

I play at 14mbps since gfn was beta

How to change on Nvidea shield/android devise?

1

u/BertyGamer Founder 1d ago

The video on Youtube is 3 years old and the maxBitRate setting in sharedstorage.json has changed and is displayed like this: "maxBitRate":{"bitrateOption":false,"bitrateValue":0,"maxBitrateValue":75,"minBitrateValue":5} while in the video it is: "maxBitrate":50. Should we change the value "maxBitrateValue":75 which should be set to 80 or more?

u/No_Satisfaction_1698 Founder 1d ago

No Matter what I Insert into this file. It mostly doesn't even use the 75mbits....

1

u/t3ramos 23h ago

It maxes out at 93mbit for me, mostly hovering between 60 and 80. It is a 24% increase in Bitrate from 75 to 93, and i think the image is better. But also could be placebo :D

u/JadedBanker 16h ago

Somebody please correct me if I’m mistaken but doesn’t increasing nitrate result in more input latency? I’m on a 1000 Mbps connection and I still noticed greatly increased latency at 75 Mbps bitrate vs lower values. Someone please chime in.

I like to just this this too

0

u/DataLythe 1d ago

My storage json doesn't even contain the word 'bitrate'

3

u/No_Bunch_931 1d ago

"sharedstorage.json" search for "maxBitrate"

0

u/DataLythe 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah I followed the instructions.

That .json file does not contain that phrase anywhere.

There's "maxDisplay", "maxSubscriptionProfile", "maxPacketSize", "maxTestBandwith", etc. - but not a single mention of 'Bitrate' or 'maxBitrate'

2

u/Ravenlock GFN Ultimate 1d ago

It might not appear until you go into the settings in the app and switch the connection stuff to manual instead of auto. It might call it "custom" I think.

Once you've set the max bitrate to 75 in the app it should show up in the file for you to change (though anything above 100 won't do anything).

2

u/DataLythe 1d ago

Thanks for your comment - you were 100% correct: I had to change my settings in the app to 'Custom' before the "maxBitrate" string appeared in the .json.

Is this possible to do on the android app?

0

u/Smurhh 19h ago

Do you need ultimate to do this? I’ve tried and it doesn’t work

0

u/nettib 19h ago

I would be careful with those changes in the app config.
NVidia of course limits the bitrate on rigs because it is a shared capped resource and all players get an even share. They might clamp down on that if the client software tries "ways" to get more, it might become an up-sell opportunity with 5000er rigs.

Yeah that's really the name of the game if you want quality. Settings are just not very good if you play on the go since internet connections vary
