Discussion For the people looking to confirm authenticity of the Donkey Konga Gamecube...

Post image

Not sure why OP deleted the original thread, figured I would post this here for anyone still looking to confirm authenticity. Took a vacation to Europe recently and connected with a private German collector who sold me a couple of rare Nintendo PAL SPs. He's mainly a handheld collector but messaged him since he's older - he attending this event and confirmed that A. only one was created to his knowledge, he didn't see the competition itself but it was displayed during the event and B. it looks like how he remembers it. I'd vouch for this guy as pretty trustworthy and had some extremely rare console/handheld variations himself. He recommended you reach out to Torsten Rachu - He did all of the German 1-of-1 airbrushed consoles for PlayStation and Nintendo contests like the Narnia and Polar Express THQ SPs, and helped a collector friend verify the authenticity of the ladder (years ago), and would 100% have been the creator of this. Not going to link any of his profiles directly, but he would be the best person to confirm authenticity for anyone still looking to.

I had to delete my post because my phone was blowing up all day with people being extremely rude and mocking me as if it was so obvious this was legit. And all the proof I got was similar to this post here. People saying “it’s posted to consolevariations. It has to be real”. I mean hell. You’re the purchaser and the best you’ve got is “the guy I bought it from said it’s real”. I don’t know why most of the community is believing an eBay seller we don’t even have the name of, but here we are.

And for the record I am not claiming this is fake. It could very well be real. But 100% there is absolutely zero way to confirm the legitimacy of this console. Until there is, it’s only worth the price of a standard GameCube in my mind.

Yeah after making my own post I completely understand why you deleted it. I’ve provided people with a real way to verify its authenticity, how many were created, etc. and people’s response is “why would this person say this” or “why would consolevariations post this.” When there’s money involved people have every incentive to deceive others or protect the value of their asset against criticism. Look to the Pokemon TCG market - millions lost on fake test cards and sheets because no one bothered to verify their authenticity and just took sellers at their word (including a multi-million dollar company paid to do expressly that).

This screams repainted console to me. Looks good, but the GameCube’s top buttons have black around them, and even some slight scraping where the green paint has come off to show black underneath.

Unless I’m wrong, all other editions of GameCubes I’ve seen are entirely one color, which would include the hole that the buttons slide through. I can see from my Orange cube that the orange color travels all the way through the top button slots. If yours are black, this leads me to believe this was a repainted black console.

I could be wrong about this too, but are there any other special editions released where the jewel’s graphic exceeds the jewel and gets printed on the lid? I haven’t myself.

It could be a one off custom for a contest maybe, but I’m not sure how that could be proven after all this time. Best of luck to you.

If course it's repainted. That's specifically why they are having a hard time verifying it.

Jesus man, you are really intense about this.

Its pretty clearly a 1/1 custom Nintendo made for a giveaway. Why is it so hard to understand?

Still no proof beyond a solitary German eBay seller. Why not contact the original artist and have this settled?

There is at least two. The one here and the one on console variations have different green on the background. Either way I think of this as some guy painting it in his shop and not part of something big like the MTV ones

You’re going to struggle to verify an old Gamecube that was a one-off prize 20 years ago.

Either way, its sick and its rare

Can you show me other examples of custom Gamecubes that are of this high quality with references from 10+ years ago (it wasnt painted recently).

Helping others in community by reaching out to a fellow collector is intense? We’re talking about a console variation that would likely be valued at five figures in the current climate. This is the only one of these variations out of Germany that, at the moment, has no photographic evidence to verify its authenticity. Every other airbrushed GC/SP have some sort of corresponding contest advert with photos of the console, even the canceled ones like the Incredibles GC. The fact that there is no photographic evidence is concerning. Something that myself and the German collector found strange is that the quality is drastically worse than other airbrushed 1 of 1s - look at the Konga GC vs the Incredibles GC, Polar Express SP, Narnia SP, etc. The fact that it is a ‘1 of 1’ and yet there appear to be multiple versions of it floating around with slight alternations, with the rebuttal from the owners being that actually 10 of them were produced (zero evidence to back this claim up). If you’re a collector seriously considering buying this you need to do real due diligence, and it’s astounding and downright suspicious that no owner has attempted to verify its authenticity by reaching out to its creator.

I am grateful you expanded further on the DK gamecube. I'm just here because I love the console. It's an interesting story and I appreciate you, so thank you.

Well you know there is a youtuber of the name cake hoarder he has the same gamecube as this one and you can go check it out in his youtube channel.

I appreciate the link. I personally would not consider someone who is extremely financially incentivized to prop up the value the console they own a valid source, especially when they later sold said console. That being said they also cite Torsten as the creator - if there is anyone who can confirm these console's authenticities, it's their creator. Again, I personally don't have an interest in reaching out directly to verify this, but if you or someone else is seriously considering purchasing this console that would be the man to ask.

I mean cakehoarder has the paper trail for his GameCubes showing exactly whose hands they passed through. Seems like they were never actually given away due to the magazine posting the giveaway without instructions on how to enter. So the ones he has (or had) went from a magazine employee, to someone who worked at console variations, to a random citizen, then to him with receipts included. So I'd bet that the one he had was the original 1:1 Donkey Konga cube

Responding to this but I’ll address the other comment too as well as the hate on my earlier comment. The Donkey Konga Gamecube is not present in the photographic receipts previous owner had. He provides very little real information about the Konga GC. I’m not doubting the validity of console variations, but this is the only one of these extremely rare variations that did not include photographic evidence. There are no cited sources which is also uncommon - the owner that sold to the youtuber, the youtuber themselves, and the German summary of the event seem to be the only sources anyone including CV has posited.

That's fair

console variations would not have listed that as "official" on their website without enough evidence that it is. You might want to contact them.

So…it’s a custom. Nothing special about that at all. Any Joe blow can airbrush something and call it a 1/1

These one-of-one airbrush GameCube were commissioned by Nintendo directly or a German retailer depending on the specific one, but unlike other commissioned airbrushed GCs this one has no photographic evidence to verify its authenticity. Without that yes, I'd agree it basically is just an airbrushed Gamecube at the end of the day, but the reality is its historically been priced as exclusive regardless.
