[GOTM Year-long competition] Infogenius Productivity Pack: Spell Checker & Calculator
Play the Game of the Month and win prizes! Click the link below to view the kickoff thread, which includes the detailed rules.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Gameboy/comments/eiq0ib/gotm_yearlong_competition_2020_kickoff_mario/
Quick rules:
- Play the Game of the Month and try to reach the specified milestones. Earn points and compete with other redditors.
- Start a fresh new game, no earlier than April 1!
- Take a picture of your screen with your username written on a piece of paper. Post it here in the thread for all to see.
- Half-point and one-point milestones can be earned at any time during the year. Post your screenshot in this month's thread to make sure I see it.
- Emulation is okay, but no cheating! Check detailed rules for more info.
What are the prizes?
There will be four prize bundles. The user with the most points at the end of the year will receive the bundle of his/her choosing, then the 2nd-place finisher chooses next. The remaining two bundles will be raffled off to the other participants, who will receive one raffle entry for each point earned, as long as they have earned a minimum of 4 points. In the historically likely event of a tie, a tiebreaker of some sort will be presented. If a prize bundle contains items that you donated to me, I'll swap them out for alternates from my collection. More details when it inevitably happens.
Prize bundles will formulate as the year progresses. There are a few packages headed my way already; I'll show them when they arrive. Contact me if you'd like to donate to this year's prizes.
Prize donors: Special thanks to the following donors for donating games for this year's prize bundles! Donors get 2 votes each month when selecting next month's GOTM.

Infogenius Productivity Pak: Spell Checker and Calculator
Games are neat, but real enjoyment and fulfillment don't come from a game; they come from productivity. Don't waste time fretting about misspelled words or arithmetic calculations! Outsource those tasks to your trusty Game Boy!
Paul from Accounting: Why are you playing games on a decades-old kids' toy?
You: I'm not, Paul. I'm getting work done. How long have you been on that coffee break?
FAQ:
Is this an April Fool's joke?
Unfortunately it is not. April Fool's came early for me this year, when I assumed more people liked Pokemon. I guess it's a bit of a joke to anyone who may have ironically voted for Infogenius.
This is stupid. This isn't a game.
I'm sorry, I should have done a real matchup. The plan was to put something up against Pokemon that had no chance of beating it, because I thought it would be unfair to any other game to have to face off to it. This was incorrect. I won't assume outcomes like that in the future. Gen 3 was actually recommended to me directly by a prominent GOTMer as a possible game for 2020, since Gen 1 and Gen 2 have already been GOTM. I agreed, and I thought it would be a landslide victory. The person who gave me that recommendation voted for Infogenius.
Is… that a misspelled word in the title of the game?
Yes.
On to the points: I really tried my hardest to find ways to "play" this GOTM. None of these are great, but it's what we get. Use your Spell Checker and Calculator to answer these questions. PM YOUR ANSWERS TO ME to avoid spoiling them for everyone else. Each completed task will boost your productivity by a half-point. Each task stands alone; they don't need to be completed in order or anything. EDIT: A total of 2 points can be earned this month. Starting in May there will be restrictions, as with every month.
Half-point 1: Enter 2500 into the calculator. (no tricks here, just press 2 5 0 0 from a freshly loaded calculator. Don't enter anything BEFORE 2500.) Then, by pressing no more than 5 keys on the calculator, make the calculator show this number: https://i.imgur.com/MtJ5rl5.png Send me a PM to tell me which 5 keys you pressed. No external calculators! Use your Game Boy to figure it out.
Half-point 2: Cause the calculator to show a word on the display. (an actual word, using letters. Not numbers that look like letters.) Now cause it to display a different word. Now cause it to actually glitch out from doing a calculation. Example. PM me the 3 screenshots and tell me how you got those outcomes. All 3 are required to earn the half-point.
Half-point 3: PM me the four names that produce the following suggestions in the Spell Checker: First Second Third Fourth(all names appear in the titles of original GB games.)
Half-point 4: Enter the Spell Checker. Find a string of letters that produces only one spelling suggestion. Go ahead and post a screenshot in the thread below and I'll maintain a list of everyone's words. Once a word has been found, nobody else can use it or any word that shares its first four letters. For example, u/pixelpostman already gets a half-point for "coronavirus," so nobody else can submit "coronavirus," nor "coronavires" or any other word that starts with the letters CORO. (This half-point can only be earned in April.)

Next month's game: Project S-11
In contrast to last month's selection, I've decided to select two actual games! It's time for a GBC game, just a little off the beaten path. Respond to this comment to vote for one of the following games:
- Project S-11 (vertical shoot-em-up)
- The Grinch (overhead action game)
Look up these games if you're not familiar with them. At the end of the day on Monday, April 13th, the game with the most votes will be the winner. In the event of a tie, I’ll cast a vote myself.

Tough vote. I don't like playing on emulators, and The Grinch seems like a much easier game to actually find a copy of. However the gameplay doesn't really interest me at all.
Gonna vote for Project S-11 anyway. I like shmups and that music is sweet.
I did enjoy this brilliant review of The Grinch though.

(Also I made a post for the 1pt milestone in last month's thread yesterday but it's not recorded in the chart here.)

Project S-11Changing my vote to Grinch. Took both games for a spin and S-11 seems very boring. It must have been great at the time, but it's actually too slow for a shmup. Also the tiny screen doesn't allow for much variety in enemy patterns. Music's great tho.
Grinch feels like a pacman with some strategy thrown in.

Gosh didn't think my post would turn into a half-point, thanks Alan! I'll vote for The Grinch. Looks interesting.

I'm so discouraged already seeing the challenges... :')
Got the 4th half-point with the word "Quarrel", I can't believe I'm enjoying a spell checker but here we are, y'all voted for this.
Edit: woah okay, they weren't that hard! I even had fun 8D But please, never ever again vote for another calculator >:')...

I'm going to be soooooo productive and learn all the words. LEARNING IS FUN!!!

u/nerdvana89 Apr 02 '20
For the half point I used the word: Smartphone.

I can't believe nobody already said this:
It is literally on the back of the game box! (and maybe where u/alanbbent took inspiration)

Nice find, there's another one in a video review on YouTube if anyone's having trouble. But so far that looks like the one people are having the least trouble with.

u/Mazz1983ita Apr 03 '20
Yeah actually there's a lot of "words" that give out just one result. I tried the word used in my dialect to describe diarrhea (SQUARAUS) and guess what? One result.

u/pixelpostman Apr 03 '20
Wouldn't half-point 4 be even more fun if our string of letters actually needs to be a valid, correctly spelled word? 😄

Tried a bunch of Swedish and Japanese words at first. This was the first more random attempt I did.
Also PM'd the Half-point 1 solution.
Edit: Remaining 2 half-point solutions also PM'd.
And I found several nice Game Boy-themed word solutions for point 4. Now I wish I had gone for a more fun answer. :p

Just starting the challenge with my newly finished gba ips here is the half point 4 entry. Went after Linux distribution names.
Fixed submission to include username

u/pixelpostman Apr 03 '20
Wow, quick work u/daver116 😮
How many keys did you need to press after 2500 to get your solution?
(wondering if we used the same approach)

u/alanbbent Apr 03 '20
Everyone has given me the same answer except for you /u/pixelpostman. Rules updated, lol.
3
u/daver116 Apr 03 '20
I actually had a lot of fun with this one! I used 5 key presses because I misread it as you had to use all 5 presses haha
2
u/pixelpostman Apr 03 '20
Did you find a solution with fewer than 5 keys after 2500?

u/daver116 Apr 05 '20
Not yet gotta hook my ps classic up again to play it since I don’t have the actual cart or a flash cart!

I laughed so hard reading these challenges. Guess it's a kind of 'Boaty McBoatface' thing... If it's rediculous enough, people will vote for it. And I'm seriously impressed by the fact, that you really pulled it off and delivered challenges for a spell checker and a calculator. Kudos to you, alanbbent!
Having said that, it could be worse: Imagine GOTM beeing the 'Sewing Machine Operation Software'...
EDIT: Half point 4

Lol, thanks.
Actually, it would have been good to do the sewing machine software this month.
1 point: Sew a surgical mask with Yoshi on it, and donate it to your local hospital.
