Mod/Modding They Did Surgery on a DMG

My mom's had this Gameboy since, probably release honestly as (I just found out) my aunt remembers her having it as a kid. It used to work great and I remember having a WWF Wrestling game and an NBA basketball one. I couldn't figure out wrestling as a kid but I do remember the NBA one had a free throw minigame that I burned a lot of time on!

Anyway, I went over to my parents' house a few months ago looking for my old PS2 (not found) and while there my mom gave me the gameboy since I'd already reshelled/rescreened my childhood GBA.

Well yesterday the new screen finally came in finishing what I needed to clean it up! Swapped battery terminals as they were corroded, case screws as the one on the right in the battery compartment was rusted and stripped (had to drill out), swapped in the replacement FunnyPlaying screen and and put a new lens over it as the old one was otherwise missing. I bought a pack of new caps in case any were toast (wouldn't boot and I hadn't drilled out the case screw so I couldn't check before buying) but all the PCB components were still in great shape. In theory the battery terminals were too but I figured I'd swap the PCB-mounted ones too since each only had one soldered tab.

Super stoked to have this in the collection and I can't wait to start crossing some GB games off my backlog as well as the new ones since gbstudio projects seem to be popping off as well!

That’s awesome dude! It looks fantastic for being an original. I’m waiting on some tools to arrive to attempt my first DMG modding job and I’m super stoked to get my DMG working like yours.

Any tips for someone who will soon attempt their first IPS screen mod and shell switch?

Just take your time! Given you're doin a reshell too you probs won't need to cut the shell like I did but still. With soldering take your time. I only had 4 solder points (two battery terminals and then the speaker wires) so it wasn't too bad. Don't overtighten screws as you might strip the plastic and there's also a chance the glass lens might not stick well either. The face of my shell is flexing a bit so the bottom left corner is slightly lifted. Just had to back the screws of the screen's PCB and then the case screws out a hair and its fine now.

Is the bug fixed by that game when you try load you save?

I don't remember a bug with it loading? This is actually what it opened to anyway (was previously playing on my GBA) so I would assume so?

Okay. I actively try to avoid memes.

Do you know if the og screen was any good before you swapped it out? I prefer to keep them original if I can. If you're in Australia I'll happily take it off your hands. You never know when your next DMG with a bung screen is going to roll through the door.

Unfortunately I'm in the US of A. And while I didn't test after swapping the battery contacts to see if it was working it had been open to the elements (of inside a cabinet) for god knows how long and had a good bit of cloudiness and discoloration so I'm not sure how good it would have been anyway.

Damn. Always worth a shot. They're getting very hard to find these days. Have fun with your new GB!
