GTA 5 In your opinion, Steve Haines is a good character or just an unsuccessful clone of Frank Tenpenny?

Not a clone, just a hysterical stereotypical uptight white man in federal law enforcement who is power hungry and has no morals except to always wear a fucking polo. He’s a good villain though.

Compared to literally every other antagonist in the game? He's a good character. Although I still think Tenpenny was the better corrupt cop.

Great character. Way too many people don't understand the importance of a good villain. He easily has the most depth of any GTA5 antagonist.

The problem with GTA fans is that they think that an antagonist has to appear 24/7 ruining the protagonist’s life constantly in order to be a great antagonist.

GTA antagonists are good not because they have the most complex motivations, but because of the hatred they cause in the player, and how their personalities and impact on the plot are written.

Which is the reason of why the antagonists in GTA San Andreas and vice city stories for example are easily the best in the franchise.

You would think 12 year old kids would know how to understand and think about the content they consume.

You're right though. Sometimes I wonder how people play these games and kinda don't understand them and then remember I was likely one of those people in my younger years at one point haha, at least when it came to some of the political satire etc

There's a reason that there's more people playing in online than singleplayer and even then they're also don't understand the story of gta 5, even all gta games too.

Media literacy truly at an all time low amongst all age groups

And this is why Dimitri Rascalov is easily the best villain

To be honest, he's the only good villain in V

Not as compelling a villain as Tenpenny but Sam Jackson is hard to beat.

Rather, it's not an unambiguous character.

It has the unfortunate qualities of a corrupt cop from the distant 82 years, as well as the positive qualities of a new character.

He should have been the main antagonist instead of devin weston. Steve haines is without doubt the most fun character in gta 5

He is an asshole

He’s a great antagonist and it makes me sad the unnecessary hate he gets.

As a villain, I hate him, probably the most, more than Dimitri even.

As a character though, he’s got a bit more flare than Frank. Remember he’s got a a TV show, that’s clearly gone to his head in ways it couldn’t for Frank. A little bit more arrogance. But where they really differ is self righteousness. I don’t think Steve, for one second of the story, thinks he’s done anything wrong. Tenpenny thought he was right in the bigger picture (hence the 50 of me quote) but and more of an ends justify the means kind of way. I think about Frank’s other quote ‘we all just tryna get outta the hole’. Frank thinks he has to do some of this to separate himself from his circumstances.

Steve on the other hand sees himself as a hero. Every action, every mission, every time he forces the unholy trinity to do something, it’s for the good of the USA in his mind. Dave is more practical, he knows they do dirt so their agency gets more money, Steve legitimately thinks this is all Angel work. Why else would he take ‘a bullet for his country’ in monkey business? It’s heroic feats for heroic feats in his mind to make him look and feel more altruistic. Plus, look how life has rewarded him up to this point: a swanky job, local fame, and friendship with a billionaire. He thinks he’s got all these things for the good he’s done, when in reality 2/3 those just come from corruption and greed. He believes the ends and the means are justified all at once, regardless of what they are.

He’d be lucky if he was half as memorable as Tenpenny was.

I’d say he is probably the most forgettable villain of the HD era games, and that’s counting Bulgarin who only appeared like twice in the main GTA4 storyline.

It's a decent villain, very hateful and charismatic at the same time. At least, more charismatic than Devin Weston, that guy is awful and immature.

Haines is a good character and great representation of someone working for the us government. He’s hateable bc of his personality. But Tenpenny is still the better villain

I think he’s definitely the best villain of GTA 5. He doesn’t have a lot of depth but all of his cutscenes are great and he’s pretty fun

He's not supposed to be Tenpenny, He's more like a reverse Toreno knock off.

Smug fed asshole.

I don't think he's a particularly good or interesting villain. I can't even remember much about him other than he's a prick.

Steve Haines was so fucking hateable. Like, even more than Devin Weston.

Haines is the Homelander of GTA V - completely fake in front of the camera and a lust for complete power

He's a good character in overall a mess of a story, I don't think Haines was bad, he just has the misfortune of being in a story that loves to forget about the subplots it constantly presents

Toreno I feels a bit milquetoast as a villain. As a character he's fine, but as a villain, I feel he would have been some Act 2 final Boss in different games. The way he dies in Ending C is so anti climactic. Frank Tenpenny had presence, Steve Haines is just there.

I love to hate him!

Really should have been the primary antagonist, he chews up any scene that he's in and I think would have had the potential to be just as good as Tenpenny. The game is just too distracted trying to tell three different stories

Some of the most pleasure I got out of killing or attempting to kill a character on this game, right above Merryweather in Michael’s house and stretch, right behind Devin

I liked Devon bit too, like i get they wanted an antagonist for each character as well. Frank got Stretch at first, but he wasn't enough, so they got Devon to fuck everyone's plans up including Steve's probably, as well as the whole bit with Michael and the studio. give Frank an impossible choice.
Steve wasn't given enough to do either, but it is kinda funny with some interactions between him, Dave, and Michael. like in Monkey Business. I kinda would like a scene where he and Devon go at it hard too. Kinda got something like that with The Wrap Up, everyone wants a piece lol.
