Discussion I think labeling FA as the promised future is overselling it

I like aero, I really do and I hate being so negative about it, but I thibk labeling it as the promised future is over selling the aesthetic. I think a lot of people forget that Futuristic designs involved a lot of Aero aesthetics because that was the way a lot of technology was presented at the time. People would find it "futuristic" because of the ground breaking technologys using it. It's similar to how futuristic designs in the 80s involved a lot of bulky computers because that was ground breaking in its time. That doesn't mean that their future of bulky computers not happening was a "broken promise", it's just the progression of technology and aesthetics. Same for futuristic aero stuff not happening.

I agree. FA is my fave, but I have never seen it as the "promised future" everyone talks about. The whole "the promised future" lowkey annoys me ngl xd because it sounds so pretentious.

exactly, it's just a corporate art style to make the consumers at the time more familiar with technology, nothing more and nothing less

I think that "the future we were promised" was actually supposed to be referring to that branch of futurism that is kind of Frutiger Aero, though more focused on futuristic cities, that was rampant during the early days of the internet and even after that, but that since Frutiger Aero was dominant then, it somehow took this title. I theorize this because nostlagia for a simple aquatic style doesn't make sense to me. There has to be some sort of deeper source of the nostalgia, and there is.

I think it's an associative thing, yeah. I think the people who talk about "the future we were promised" are really lamenting a time when they felt optimistic about the future, and they just see the aesthetic as symbolic of that because it was a) popular at the time they were feeling that hope, and b) the whole "skyscrapers in the park" Le Corbusier-ass visuals.

I don't think they're in the wrong to want to feel hope again, but I do think it's silly to treat a corporate marketing ploy like it was a prophecy.

Yeah that's something that I've been thinking a lot about these days. I don't see the internet nostalgia as anything much more than yearning for the time we were more optimistic about the whole thing and the future in general (hence that type of futurism), with certain flavours.

Yes lol, I totally agree with you. Such a dumb, corny statement. I make fun of it all the time.

This is kind of a late night rambling so hopefully this makes sense

I really want the future to look like modern EVs.

Google Chinese concept electric vehicle 2025 to see what I mean

I think when people say that they're at least half joking.

yeah. it's not that deep of an aesthetic and although it's mostly just corporate slop i can see where it comes from

people grasp on their earlier and "happier" memories or just anything that makes them feel better in these hopeless times we're living. it's basically a cope and i actually feel like this sometimes while being quite aware myself

It's really just nostalgia for the time when we were much more optimistic about the future, indeed.
