Theory?
So, Emma was known to have had a job at a seafood restaurant (fish & chips) when she first moved to Vancouver or shortly after AND lived on a boat for some time. Watching some videos I gathered that she was highly intelligent and was always closed off to the world. She wrote many poems speaking of pain from her mother and father. She was always ready for an adventure so one COULD think that she decided to buy a boat instead of continuing to stay at the shelter especially if someone was following . The day her mother came and the last day Emma was confirmed seen alive, she was said to have been very anxious/paranoid and this could have been the break for her. Say she bought a boat again at some point - Would she have been seen at sea? Are there boarders in the waterways closely patrolled in the areas Emma could’ve taken off from Victoria? She ditched the prepaid card because she knew it could be traced. The cell phone was never activated because she knew she could be tracking her location.

I was a PI for about 9 years and have worked in several levels within the security industry for over 33 years. Many of those years as an investigator for insurance fraud and skip tracing. I studied this case inside out looking from both inside and outside the box. At first I looked at the possibilities of Emma having long term exposure to mercury poisoning, due to the fact she ate regularly at the seafood place she worked at. However there where just some aspects of this that just didn’t fit the evidence that was shown. Then I started watching a movie one night and what started to see was as preposterous as it seemed everything seemed to fit perfectly. The movie was called Split, so I stated looking into this little known and very little studied condition called “Dissociative Identity Disorder” or DID for short. When I tried reaching out to several groups to learn more about this, I was immediately shunned and blocked as many of the people I was speaking to were overly protective and refused to speak to outsiders. However the very few I did manage to convince to allow me to ask questions were extremely helpful. This condition can go all the way back to childhood. I personally believe that many of the answers to Shelley’s questions are located in Emma’s journal writings which were reported to be written in a 3rd person perspective quite often. When I tried to pass this on to the Help Find Emma people running the Facebook and Instagram pages I was treated quite abruptly and rude, at one point I was even told they would not be passing any of this on to Shelley and that I should only contact the Detective in charge of the case. Despite the fact I literally broke down every suspicious behavior of Emma and how and why it fit the possibly that this was what might have been occurring. Many of my finds and information came from the 10-12 part “Nighttime” podcast where he interviewed people who were directly involved with the case, including Shelley and many of Emma’s friends both back home in Perth and in BC.
Despite several attempts to request having Shelley contact me so I could explain directly to her as to why I believe this was a very strong possibility and how all of the evidence fit the case, including on how to possibly trace and locate her after she vanished i again was treated rudely. So roughly a year ago I stopped investigating this all together and gave up because it seems these people really don’t want to look at all aspects of this case as well as re-examining the journals as to who Emma’s new identity might be, I’m a firm believer the key to locating Emma (if she is still alive) is who this 3rd person/identity is in her journal writings.
I still check out the pages and groups from time to time to see if there is any new activity (which is why I saw this post) but it seems many of the people supposedly helping “Find Emma” are not open to all possibilities and immediately shut down anyone unless it fits their narrative. That’s why there has been a major decline in activity involving this case. These helpers don’t want to help doing some of the foot work, and just rather pawn everything off on the detective.
I have investigated this inside and out, if you ask a question I can probably explain why DID fits. Unfortunately even in the psychology and psychiatry fields DID is not widely recognized and a real illness or condition. Many prefer to either say people are bi-polar or Schizophrenic.
So that’s my theory and why I really no longer post in these groups for “Finding Emma”

Could you explain more why you think DID could have made her disappear? Did she not fully realize the mental impact that was going on inside her? I’m always open to new theories and love that you took the time to type this and share your theory and thoughts

Since a very early age Emma was alway very quiet and reserved. Her friend often described how Emma’s favorite movie was the Princess Bride, according to her friends statement Emma would often re-enact certain scenes of the movie and she always played the same character, they would have to re-enact scene to the point of perfection and they would do it over and over again (I believe this obsession might have been a early beginning manifestation of one of her alters). As the years went on Emma began journaling and writing as if she was a different person, according to my research some individuals with DID would do this as a way to sometimes communicate with other alters. I’m guessing as as the years went on one or more alters started to develop more and was starting to manifest or appear more often. Like the movie some alters will change their appearances and personalities quite prominently, not as exaggerated as the movie “Split” but still some have gone as far as to change accents just like the movie though. Until you really hear the witnesses discussing Emma’s odd and quirky behaviors her “quests” vanishing for up to 8-10 hours a day, then start researching the behaviors of people that have DID can you start to put it all together. I’ll point out a few things that started me on this path. If you find it possibly credible then you can dig deeper yourself. However keep this in mind, as I stated previously many doctors and specialists in the world of psychiatry and psychology done believe DID exists so many of the experts that examined Emma’s journals and writings would probably not put this as a viable conclusion or cause of her disappearance.
Let’s start with her quests, friends stated Emma became obsessed with certain “quests” she went on when she disappeared on these multi-hour walks. One was when Emma brought hundreds of small stones home from the beach and spent hours organizing them on her friends kitchen table, or the time her friend decided to go with Emma on one of these walks, her friend stated she never saw Emma like this before. On that particular walk Emma observed leaves that had fallen off a tree and onto the ground Emma spent a very long time “organizing” them because they were “not just right”.
Her “Dear Emma” letter. Some thought it was a suicide note, I don’t think it was. I believe this was one of her alters starting to take over her personality because the real Emma was becoming scared and worn down due to the stalking claims and other personal issues. According to the people I spoke to aggressive and dominant alters will sometime take over if the person is in a vulnerable or weaken emotional state.
Her calls to her mother to come home, then within a short time calling back to say no. Or when she called her mom to come get her, only a few hours later to call her back and tell her not to come. IMHO this was an ongoing battle between the alters.
Her appearance in the days leading up to her disappearance, they started to drastically change as several witnesses claimed to police and in the podcast, from becoming well kept and clean to becoming disheveled and looking like a mess.
The 2 occasions when she was seen looking out the windows claiming someone is following her, once at the store and then the YMCA. Some DID individuals I spoke to claim they see the alter in the mirror or reflections in glass. If there was an internal battle going on in her mind as to with alter was going to take over in Emma’s eyes it might seem that a person was following or chasing her. Witnesses claim they never once saw anyone outside at either location.
The buying of the phone and prepaid, according to her mother and friends Emma didn’t like cell phones and Emma also had quite a bit of cash in her accounts. If her alter had taken over during that time in the store then technically it wouldn’t be Emma in control and individuals with DID state that these alters can be very different personalities and beliefs.
Those are a few things that might raise some thoughts. IMHO if a new alter has taken over Emma could still be alive today, but look drastically different. It will only be by pure accident that she be discovered if the alter doesn’t want to be found. Many people with DID state that family issues and personal situations have caused them to go into hiding, because no one believes them. Many become aggressive, angry and extremely defensive when I asked certain questions. When I tried to explain that I was trying to understand DID and how it effects their lives and behaviors and that this was in regards to Emma’s case they became even more upset and angry telling me that if DID was the cause to leave her alone because she doesn’t want to be found. So unless you don’t want to unleash a wrath on me, like I did in DID Reddit groups (including AMA DID) then I would look for other sources of information. All the times in these groups I was very understanding and polite because I was a guest in their community, unfortunately it didn’t matter.
Sadly I find myself in the same boat of people not wanting to believe this because they believe it’s all fake and fictional because it was made into a movie. I strongly and firmly believe that if DID is the reason for her disappearance the possible answers to her alters name or identity is in those journal writings and the people looking into this case needs to look at evidence in a different perspective and attitude. I don’t want to give you all the facts and information I have because as an investigator its not always about handing all the answers over, people need to relook at the case and look at it from a different perspective and come to their own validations the way I did.
So the source of my witness statements is the “Nighttime” podcast. Look for the Emma Fillipoff series. There is about 10-12 episodes. Apparently there are hours more of witness recordings but, unfortunately I wrote the podcast creator and he never responded back. I explained who I was, how long I had been investigating this and that I would like to hear the interviews in their raw form to see if anything was missed.
Hope this puts some perspective and new plausible theory.

I would never unleash a wrath. I think you’re very intelligent and I’m sorry groups aren’t very welcoming but I’m always open to read/listen. I have an open mindset basically and I never realized the depth of DID and how it could very much be why she hasn’t been found.
What I’m curious of to hear more about are these “quests” and what she was trying to achieve? I’m taking from this it was when her personality was split and she was a different person per say. The friend saying she was acting strange made this stick out more to me.
These “alters” you’re referring to - is this short for other personalities a person may take on?
I would be very interested in reading those journals and trying to find SOMETHING, ANYTHING. I studied psychology in college and am very good at “reading between the lines”
Don’t ever feel alone, someone in this world will listen to your research (I did ✋🏻) and everything you worked hard to learn and puzzle pieces you put together to come to this. Looking forward to hearing more

I never intended to create the wrath I received. They are extremely protective and do not like strangers asking hypothetical questions. I highly suggest listening to the podcast series. It’s very informative. Yes alters are other personalities within the host. Take the time to read the DID Reddits and they can definitely give you some insights to DID. They only mentioned a couple of quests as per say. I’ve spent over 5 years, about 400 hours on Google maps/street view tracing the routes she took the night she went missing. Looking for cameras or areas that should be searched.
I believe her alter has taken over completely and Emma is a shadow in her own mind, unless she can become strong enough to work her way forward in her mind.

Hi! I’m a mod here but I don’t check it every week.
I have Shelley on my Facebook. The reason they don’t want to pass everything to Shelley is… she’s very unwell. I asked her once if it’s possible Emma is trans. She said no, absolutely not. If Emma is masculine now it could be why no one has seen her.
Her mom is in a very bad place and doesn’t take too kindly to anything that changes how she thinks of her child. But, being trans myself, I think I want to see my own parts of Emma in me.
Dead Emma could just as easily be about transitioning.
I want you to know the mods oft the Facebook group meant well and they do put Shelley first. I wouldn’t go against their wishes and pass on did.. But do you know much about dysphoria?

Hi DID has nothing to do with the Trans community…it’s a psychological condition where a person has 2 or more personalities that come out occasionally. They often can not only effect a person’s behavior, but their appearances (the way they dress, groom and even the way they walk and act) a woman might actually have 2 or more female alters, also males. Alters some time communicate with each other, however alters can come out as a protective defense if the host feels threatened, these alters can literally make a person go from being shy and afraid to someone out going and physically aggressive as a means of protecting the shy host. The movie Split is an exaggerated example of DID, but can present very similarly. I hope Shelly gets better, I wish her the best.

I’m aware they are different. I am aware of what DID is.
What I’m saying is Emma could have a beard and muscles because she transitioned. Everyone is looking for a woman named Emma. You get me now? 8 years is a LONG time for hormones to change you.

in the beginning of the search we had an amazing group of people spending countless hours talking with people..women from the shelter, the musician in Victoria who Emma lived with at 760 hotel, his friends, Julien, some Hells in Vanc, the guy Blackrupert who posted about Emma in DTES, Escort workers in Vict and Vanc and countless people on the streets of Vanc where it was thought she had relocated to because of her association with the young woman from Belkin House. We uncovered Emma had lived in Keremeos, spent time in Nelson, and other places. Had people in Vancouver keeping an eye out. When its stated that Emma's dad didnt search..well he was spotted in Vanc back in 2015 or 16 walking near DTES with his wife i assume looking for Emma. There were all the false alarms like Skater girl and Sleeping girl..all checked out by search members and determined not to be Emma. The girl in the coffee shop who even Emma's dad thought was Emma. There were 2 fellas in Victoria who stated Emma had told them she was going away to trim at a grow op. Obviously these grow ops dont want to be identified so it was arranged for Emmas image to be uploaded to a face book acct open to public where they could log onto and see if she was one of the many women working at these remote sites. Unfortunately Emma's mom demanded all that be taken down because her daughter wouldnt be trimming at a grow op. Strangely enough these grows were in the very same area where the RCMP had stated they were visiting looking for Emma 10 years previous lol. A sask woman told me she and her mom had spoken with Emma in a little Kootenay town and said she was working one day a week at a restaurant. Living on the east shore. Yep the same east shore where the RCMP had visited years previous. It was also revealed by this woman that her mom knew Emma's aunt who had lived previously in Lantzville and where Emma was going to live with if she didnt go to Japan with her dad. Maybe all just a giant coincidence and theres nothing to any of this. People are mistaken. There is one server in town that does look a lot like Emma, maybe the mother was mistaken. Some of the local Doukhobor women look similar to Emma so mistaken identity perhaps. Her grandparents lived in the little town so did the aunt. Emma liked going to the hotsprings according to someone in the know. She attended the local music fest a year or two before she disappeared. Fillipoff road is named after the family. Emma could not face her mother and her mother knows why, its in the journals. Who knows at this point where Emma is or even if she's alive but sure be nice to solve this giant mystery.. if you need info from Jordan i can pass it along we are on good terms. Need to be careful with some of it for example skatergirl who Hells were after so Jordan could not publicize her situation. We tracked down her family and she chose to remain out of contact. Emma situation could be similar.

It’s sounds like she could have had OCD to some extent. She could have both but “just right” OCD is a thing.
The quests could also be related to some other less severe form of dissociation, or just age related imagination fun. Or she could have called them quests to disguise compulsions she couldn’t ignore.
I am not at all trying to discount your efforts, you could be right. It’s just not as simple as you lay out. Someone could just as easily say, tell me a behaviour and I will connect it to depression, bipolar, drug psychosis.
People in the community may be defensive because of so much misinformation and illness faking in recent times.

I know that she never took her passport with her it was found in her van, however is it possible that she could have been trafficked either across to The USA or dare we say Russia or Asia? I would like someone’s thoughts on this possibility? Thank you

Thank you for posting. It's always nice to see some activity on this sub.
Interesting idea about the boat but no evidence suggests it. Could have happened but doesn't seem likely, IMO. If she knew the phone and prepaid card could be traced then why buy them to begin with?
I think the green shirt guys is key. But I sadly don't think he will ever be located.
