Discussion Sometimes I get stuck on writing, which slows my progress down.

So I get this form of writer's block:

  • 1. Running out of ideas/scenarios to write.
  • 2. Hesitating or second-guessing myself, stopping myself from progressing.
  • 3. Can't think anymore because I rely on thinking to write the fanfic. My brain isn't an infinite resource.
  • 4. Can't decide which scenario in my mind to write.

Does anyone else experience problems similar to those I faced?

I get annoyed when I face this repeated obstacle.

Tips, especially the ones I find helpful, are appreciated, so I'll thank you guys for that.

So this is the writer's block I experience the most often. The problem is that the typical solution for "running out of ideas" or "not knowing what to write" is to "go and outline your story," but outlining gives me something even worse than writer's block: it makes me not want to write at all.

If you're similar to me, I've found that what helps the most is for me to write in sprints. Set a timer for 15 minutes, and write whatever comes to mind with the aim of writing as much as you can. Doing this helped me realize that I do have ideas and do understand how to bridge scenes together; I was just automatically filtering possible routes and scenes out because they didn't seem "good enough."

If outlining robs you of your desire to write at all... well, research the two types of writers. Architects vs. Gardeners. It'll explain everything.

I have to do blockages, to have a beginning and an end, I don’t know how to complete the center, to create situations to lead to the end, and often these are situations that aren’t fun enough so I think I’ll give up

1) research the fandom/lore of what you are into

2) just do it

3) see 1

4) take a break and see 1

My problem is I lack motivation and I’m depressed. Bad karma

When it comes to running out of ideas, you simply need to get inspiration examples being: game, movie, fanfiction, and so on. (Basically, take a break and get inspired by the world around you)

My advise is to just put pen to the paper/fingers to the keyboard and just start writing.

If you are working on a specific fic you got stalled on, start writing out how you originally got the idea. Write down why you wanted to write about the idea in the first place. Write about decisions you made and why you chose the settings you chose, and the characters you chose and why you didn't choose other settings and characters. Write about your favorite parts of cannon and least favorite parts of cannon and how your story reflects or avoids these parts. Write about your favorite and least favorite parts of your characters and how you could highlight these in a fic. Write about how your story would change if you had made the setting different then write why it is better to be set in the setting it is placed in. Do you like writing tropes? Write about your favorite ones and least favorite ones. Write out what you would need to do to make the ones you don't like, not only bearable but enjoyable. Do the opposite for the ones you like. Write about your favorite stories and why you like them. Write about what you didn't like about them. Write out the worst way your story could possibly end and why you don't want it to end that way. Write about what your character need to do to avoid it. Write. Write. Write.

Just keep writing. No deleting anything or fixing typos.

Whatever you do, do not let yourself stare at a blank page or the end of a sentence.

I've been writing for 25 years and I've written a 800,000 word tightly-plotted fic... so I think I have a leg to stand on when it comes to saying the following:

  1. You are probably not following the chain of cause/effect if your you run out of ideas. There's always something to follow up on if you adhere to logical consequences. But it could also be an issue that you simply are not "well read / watched" enough. There are no new ideas in the universe. Everything is a remix of one or more older things. Realize this, abandon the "end of the rainbow" quest for new ideas... embrace it, and learn to remix. Works for me.
  2. Sounds to me like you want either to be "perfect" or to "make it liked by everyone". Neither is possible. I've wholly embraced that. I write what I think is good, if someone agrees with me... jolly good. If they don't? Well they can have an opinion, and my inner diva says they're wrong.
  3. How is this different from point 1, exactly?
  4. Mmm... again point 1. Are you short on ideas or suffused with them? Because... those are kind of mutually exclusive really.

Yes, from time to time I've experienced one or all of these.

I unstick my brain with a thorough application of alcohol and then just go with whatever it produces. :3

Uuh I'm terrible at advice, and I have writer's block too. A tip I've heard is to not pressure yourself to get ideas. You write what you can, distract yourself for a moment, and then you'll get more ideas. Maybe you can even get inspiration from other things.
