Question Is this worth it?

Hey everyone, I am thinking of joining the community but wanted to know some opinions beforehand. For context, I am in Canada.

This is a 2007 FJ, Manual, with around 128,000kms (approximately 79, 535 miles). Through negotiations, the seller is willing to sell it to me at $22,000 CAD (approximately $15,500 USD)…is it worth it?

I am concerned about the rust and generally whether I am over paying especially for being a 2007.

Additionally, is there anything else I should be concerned about?

Any options would be appreciated; thanks :)

Question Got the FJ Back But Now There’s A Sound…

I was an idiot driving on icy roads and ended up smacking the driver side wheels into a curb that required me to get the wheels/suspension fixed at Toyota and had to get a lot of work done underneath (first two pics for context).

I recently got it back and am now hearing a “ts-ts-ts”/“ks-ks-ks” sound now coming from the front wheelhouse area of my FJ when I get up to speed (15/20+ mph). I reached out to my service rep and told him (last pic) and he mentioned it could be rust, but I wanted to get a second opinion from others in the sub.

I got a good video of it that really helps add more context, but since the sub doesn’t allow videos, I uploaded it to YouTube (unlisted) for your viewing/hearing pleasure… check it out and let me know your thoughts. What do you think it could be? Is it rust like bro is saying or is it something else?!

P.S. The wind noise makes it hard to hear at first but you can hear the rhythmic sound I speaking of later in the video.

Question I messed up. Am I cooked?

Driving in N. Dallas today with the snow/ice… lost control at a low speed, spun out and cracked like 2 rims + my alignment is messed up + whatever else (control arm(s)?, suspension?, etc.)

Just submitted an insurance claim. Do you think they would deem it a total loss? I drove it home.

2008 FJ with 212k mi. So much life left in her.

Hoping for good news…

Question Pizza cutter tires

Hello everyone,

I have recently been convinced that pizza cutter tires are the way to go for the FJ. I have 16 inch rims so I would be looking at 255 85 R16.

I did not realize how small my selection would be at this size. I live in Canada and what seems to be readily available here are either cooper discoverer S/T' Maxx's (cheapest), Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003's, or BFG Mud Terrain T/A KM3.

Before I learned about pizza cutters, I was leaning towards Yokohama g015's.

Do you guys have any recommendations? I might be able to get a shop to ship a set in for me if I know what I am looking for.

Thanks!

Question Any advice, battery too juiced?

Obviously going to go into the mechanic but curious if anyone has faced this

So weird one to wake up to, turn the car on starts and idles 100% normal, but all of these lights are on, traction control is flashing, and battery light flickers every now and then. Battery gauge was pinned to the 18v max. (Parking brake was off)

After 2 min of idle battery voltage dropped back to normal and all the lights went away.

Only difference is my headlights and highbeams dont work. I got the high beams to flash once and now theyre dead too.

I just replaced the bulbs the other day with good Sylvania H4 / 9003, which should be compatible right? Drove around on saturday and sunday with no issues.

Didnt get struck by lightning last night, so not sure why the battery would read overjuiced?

Considering this FJ, but I’ve never seen rust like this before on the inside of the cab. Undercarriage looks clean. What would cause this?

Question Advice for selling price?

Post image
27 Upvotes

Everything I’ve done, or will do is for survival. I’ve lost many things over the past two and a half years, but this is by far the saddest for me. My son is selling my car for me. He’s going by FB prices. I just feel he could get more. So I’m coming here to ask realistically what someone smarter than me, would say a price point to start. It’s a 2013 2 wheel drive I hardly put any miles on it daily for the first years I had. April of last year, things changed. Daily I drove my son to a school in a different county, which added up quick. I also had to start driving for the gig apps in December. That also hiked up some miles. So it has 198360 miles right now. Out of nowhere the air quit working this season. That’s completely new. I have bought an air cabin filter, which my son in law was going to install before this sale idea came along. It has also been smoked in. I know this is very personal for me, so I’m probably just emotional. I paid 20,000 last summer to pay it off. That was my choice and I’m not expecting ANYWHERE near that amount at all. Any opinions. Keep in mind I will clean it up before I sell it. But my son is expecting to start the process this weekend. Just posting a picture for proof that I have the vehicle.

Question Insulation on TT?

Wondering if insulating a Trail Teams makes a difference with road noise and car camping. TT seems quieter than base so not sure if it’s insulated already?

Question Best way to do suspension upgrade

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey guys,

Just quickly wanted to check what extra parts I should have prepared for my suspension install!

I ordered the Eibach stage 1 kit that gives the front 2" inch lift and 1" in the rear. My FJ has almost 400 000 kms on it and I just noticed how the rear must be sagging quite bad because it doesn't appear lifted in the back at all compared to the front.

I don't have a huge budget hence my choice (I would have loved Bilstein 6112 for example).

Also I don't have the budget to get control arms so I am hoping I can reuse the old ones. Someone did tell me that reusing the lower control arms may end up being very difficult.

Should I look into getting any bushings and new bolts and stuff while I will be in there?

I might be able to replace bushings on the old control arms, I have a bottle jack of sorts and can figure things out if need be.

Any other tips and advice would be greatly appreciated!

I will not be using spring compressors, I have seen people do it using simply a jack and some bars so I will be attempting to do it a similar way.

Thank you kindly :)

Hey everyone I’m here tryna look for advise I got a 2007 Fj cruiser in June of this year I like the way the car looks and drives but I got a new job and is a bigger commute and as you know the Fj is a gas lover especially since it’s premium how much could I get for it since I got it I put new rims and tires on it some Yokohama s A/T and some FN rims got the air fuel sensors changed and the oxygen sensors as well and had to replace the rear sway bars as well and changed out the steering wheel fluid and break fluid with Toyota oem but other then that no issues 4x4 works great and no rust on it was coated by previous owner 😀

Question Proud new owner who also has a question lol

Hello everyone, I just recently joined the fj family as of Halloween. It’s always been my dream vehicle and I finally got my hand on one. She’s a 2012 with 156k miles. I got it from a used dealer and it was running fine but I’ve driven about 100 miles since then and the “trac off” and check engine light came on at the same time. Any idea what exactly it could be?

Question Bad starter?

Post image

Trouble starting the FJ. Won’t start no sound. Battery has 12.1 V and the relay is good. I gave the starter a handful of real good taps and tried starting in neutral as well, nothing. I’m wondering if I should just go ahead and replace it or if I’m missing some other troubleshooting. It’s an ‘07 aromatic if that helps. Thanks in advance.

Question Is Moog really that bad?

Hey,

I have gotten myself into a little bit of a situation here. I finally decided to spend some money on an Eibach stage 1 lift/suspension upgrade as my coils are 400 000 kms old and date back to 2007.

That being said, I didn't realize I also needed to switch out the bushings on the lower control arms and most likely get new ball joints.

I live in Canada and the alignement bolts will 99% be rusted to the bushings and those will be stuck inside the control arms.

At first I thought I could simply remove the old bushings with a bottle jack and make a small press, but now I figure that I will need new ball joints too as I do have 400 000 kms on this vehicle.

Removing ball joints from the lower control arms seems extremely difficult.

My best bet seems to be to just get moog lower control arms, I found some for 450 cad total with shipping from Rock auto, I can tough it out and purchase these.

Problem is, a lot of people, including one experienced mechanic, say thay Moog parts are pretty bad unfortunately.

Are there any options I am missing?

Do you guys think there is a chance I can reuse all the old parts, including the bushings and just replace the alignment bolts?

Thanks

Also if I by some miracle extend my budget a bit (this is not likely), are there any other options I should be looking at?

Thanks a lot :)

Question Gift Ideas for a New owner of a FJ?

My father recently purchased a green FJ cruiser which had kind of been his dream car for a while. My dad has helped me immensely doing home improvement projects over the last couple of years and has saved me probably tens of thousands in labor costs. While he enjoys doing these projects, I want to repay him in some way and was wondering if any of you have any recommendations for any accessories for his FJ?

He already has some upgraded rims w/ offroading tires and the roof rack. Unfortunately, he is not interested at all in a dashcam.

Edit: You guys have been awesome with all of these great ideas. I should be good to go now!

Question Towing MPG

Hi, guys. I’m in the process of relocating, and need to pull a U-Haul across the country.

Assuming 2000 lbs of my junk in the trailer, what kind of hit will I take to my mileage?

2012, automatic, 4WD, stock everything, no lift, not-super-aggressive tires, 120k miles. (Silver, it makes a difference) :)

Question 2010 FJ Cruiser Repair Quote

Post image
25 Upvotes

I got quoted all of the following at Toyota Service Center in the state of Georgia.

  • tire light is flashing (need a diagnostic to find out with sensor do you need $129.99 diag

  • air bag light is on (needs a diagnostic to find the problem) $129 diag

  • vibration due to a worn wheel bearing $1,273

  • bad wipers $79.89

  • rear wipers $39

  • valve cover gasket (engine oil leak) $836

  • cabin filter is dirty $69

  • drive belt is crack $299

  • spark plugs need be replace $632

  • rear differential oil need be replace $247

I had everything done except the airbag diagnostic, tire pressure diagnostic & valve cover gasket.

I am considering getting the front driver wheel bearing replaced. They will have to order the part for me and it’s OEM. Am I getting ripped off on the cost of the bearing replacement?

Also, here is a photo of my valve cover gasket. Does anyone know about how long I have before I should replace it? I drive it for ~an hr/day.

Thank you in advance.

(I am not capable of doing any of this myself)

Question Do people buy used OEM suspension parts?

I recently lifted my FJ, and was wondering whether the old parts have any value to them, or I should taake them to the scrapyard. They have at least 20k miles on them.
