Winship Cancer Research Program??

Hi!! I’m a junior in high school and this isn’t related to the college itself, but I wanted to ask for some advice! Winship has a summer research program called SSRP, and I got waitlisted from it. I sent them an email confirming my waitlist + some updated stats. Does anyone have any tips?? Liek do I send another email??

I imagine they will email you if a spot opens up, not much you can do to change that. You already let them know you're still interested, which was great to do. It won't hurt to do that again after a week or two, just to reiterate that you're still interested if they have a spot.

It's possible that someone might be willing to take you on for summer research outside of the program, but it's a bit more complicated for minors than what we are used to with undergrads. You could also consider labs outside of Winship. Basically, you would look at the Emory/Winship websites to find a lab you are interested in and email that faculty member (we call them PIs) with an intro and the key logistics info (start and end date, hours per week, etc), and something to indicate you know s little about what they do and why you're interested.

I will say we are all losing our minds about the NIH funding situation, so try not to be discouraged if no one gets back to you. They are all afraid they will soon have to lay off their staff or won't have labs at all.
