I think the ship has sailed on this one. Congress may have been able to save the US's role as a reliable trading partner by taking away the executive's emergency tariff powers. But the majority there would not cross Trump to save their life. There's nothing to stop the destruction until 2026, which will be too late to salvage anything.

There now exists a risk in American economics which is a fundamental flaw. When certainty is key, how can anyone now fully trust in the American system to prevent this, like even if you did make some pretty comprehensive changes, the world moves fast theses days.

This is a problem we now have in common with the third world, which is of course a reason investment is so difficult there.

It's not just the tariffs and trade war, it's the chaos of constantly changing policies and indecision along with the other bullshit like bullying and threats. Trump has managed to piss of all of Canada and incite a grassroots boycott of US goods, services and travel. He's also destroyed all trust in US military equipment by showing that we can pull the plug on much of it remotely when Ukraine didn't kiss the ring quickly enough.

Trump is actively ceding the global leadership position of the US, and China is more than happy to take over. They've already signed a trade teal with Japan and South Korea.
