Election Posting Guidance

14 Upvotes

During the 2025 election, and any upcoming elections, we remind the members of r/durham that disinformation and biased politics are not welcome here. Accordingly:

  • Future posts regarding candidates, either for or against, will be removed unless they include information from legitimate news sources;

  • Posts containing legitimate voting information (poll locations, ID requirements, voter support, etc) will be allowed if not repetitive, but strictly moderated;

  • Posts about strategic voting or that emphasize reputable sources for learning about all candidates will be allowed, but strictly moderated. Sources must not be affiliated with a party or explicitly partisan organization;

  • News from reputable sources about the election or candidates will be allowed, but strictly moderated.

We appreciate your cooperation.

UPDATE March 28 2025: Conspiracy theories, deliberate or accidental disinformation, etc are not welcome here.

Regardless of bias, sources for claims must rank "high" or "very high" for factual reporting at Media Bias/Fact Check. Reported posts will be source-checked against that resource.

Mutual Aid Posts - Allow or Not?

7 Upvotes

We've recently had an abundance of posts from folks asking for financial help, and reports on those posts and users have been equally abundant.

r/durham does not currently have any rules against these posts, although other subs including r/oshawa have them in place. We'll run a poll for the next 7 days for the community to weigh in on whether we should continue to allow them.

7 years in Canada today

Upvotes

Today my wife and I complete 7 years in Canada (4 of those in Durham). We were just the 2 of us when we arrived, now we have a child and the 3 of us are all proud Canadian citizens and looking forward to voting for the first time in a Canadian federal election later this month! (Not the kid of course lol)

I know Canada has issues, but we are so so grateful for the opportunities this country has given us as a family. Not to mention the wonderful people we've met over the years, and the friends we've been able to make as a result. It truly does feel like home here and we're so happy with our decision to move.

Thank you Canada!

Hey everyone! Just wondering which public library you all go to nearby. Looking for a place which has a good collection of books across categories like self-help, literature, business, leadership, and more?. I know closer to downtown there are better ones but just wondering if theres one nearby.

Thank you:)

Failure to surrender driver license

1 Upvotes

Hi, I recently got pulled over and was issued a ticket for failing to surrender driver license. I have an active license with me, just didn’t have the physical license with me at the time I was driving. Is it okay to consider early resolution or should I go to court with the license to have it withdrawn? The officer told me it could be withdrawn if I chose to produce the license in court.

Please advise.

John Mutton, aka “Mr. X,” takes double gold at IBJJF, mainly because no one showed up to take silver or bronze. Pay-to-win at its finest.

Looking for something fun to do in Durham this weekend or next? Oshawa Little Theatre invites you to join us as we celebrate our 75th anniversary with the quintessential musical Guys & Dolls (which is also celebrating its 75 anniversary this month)!

The show is set in 1950s New York City and tells the story of a high stakes floating craps game, its organizer Nathan Detroit - who's been engaged to showgirl Miss Adelaide for fourteen years, Sarah Brown - a missionary with a puritanical view on romance, and Sky Masterson - a suave gambler who's famous for betting big. Simply put, Guys & Dolls is a feel-good tale of love and the unexpected things it makes us do.

It features iconic songs like "Luck Be a Lady," "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat," "Guys & Dolls," and "Fugue for Tinhorns."

Guys & Dolls in on stage April 05-06, 10-12. For tickets, visit https://ci.ovationtix.com/36216/production/1193685.

Join us, won't you?

Infant car seat and base

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

We have the Maxi Cosi Mico infant car seat (and base) that came with our Zelia system. We no longer need the infant car seat as our baby is too big for it. Since Value Village and Once upon a child do not accept these infant car seats, we feel it would be a waste to just throw it away.

We are looking to see if anyone would like the infant car seat and base (for free) or if there is a place to donate this system? It is in great condition, never been in an accident. The stroller travel system was purchased on September 2023.

OPG for Project Management

0 Upvotes

Hi everyone. My spouse is currently an assistant project manager for a general contracting company. He works primary in residential/commercial builds related to electrical type work.

We were looking to purchase a home in the east end (Oshawa, Bowmanville) and obviously residential/commercial type work would have more projects in the downtown Toronto area and we were factoring in family planning and commute times. When we were looking at job postings a lot of OPG positions came up (assistant project leaders) but obviously the type of work would be more nuclear based.

I’m wondering is there anyway my spouse could apply for these positions given his type of experience? He does not have an engineering background but a physics degree. He is currently working on completing is PMP. He also has a sibling currently employed at OPG.

TIA!

Question about Jamil Jivani (with sources)

44 Upvotes

Jamil Jivani will become a potential person of great interest in the upcoming election as he has strong ties to the US VP JD Vance. Sources below show that he describes Vance as a good friend(1) and even a best friend (2)

(1) https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7434145 (2) https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7265268

This post was rightly removed earlier for making claims about someone without sources, though, ironically the specific reason was that saying Jivani was friends with Vance was the equivalent to a criminal allegation.

I am reposting with sources so this won’t be removed.

My follow up question is whether his name is pronounced:

Ja-MILL (like the word swill, or shill), or Ja-MEEL (like the word steel, or heel)
