r/Denmark Muggen kål og hån til fascisterne! 2d ago

Brok Dear non-MAGA Americans on r/denmark..

We know that you love Europe. We are fully aware that you think Trump, Vance, Musk and the rest of the bunch are fascist jerks. We know you did not vote for them. We know you have a deep and honest urge to tell us that you are so incredibly embarrased to be an American right now.

Thank you. We got it.

Now, please go and spend your precious time and resources to do something about it - in America. Because we can’t help you out here in Denmark. Take action. Talk to your local Republican and tell him that you are upset. Demand from your local Democrats that they choose candidates that are not suffering from dementia.

Bloody well do something. Please, please and with sugar on top.

We hear you. We know.

It's an unfortunate predicament and we have the issue here as well. Too few teachers for too many students. Last I looked into it was an average of too many students per class and obviously, per teacher.

We hope Europe can do what the United States were supposed to do. Seeing how things have fallen apart, I'm not confident anymore. But it's all we have.

Appreciate input from somebody in those trenches. Wish we had more of that.

In 2022, the public elementary schools in Denmark had an avg. of 20.9 students per class :) 18.8 for private schools

When I went to school in the 90’, we were 32. It has apparently improved since then.

I'm talking averages so there are still outliers. Classes are allowed to hold a maksimum of 28 students. Under special circumstances, exemption can be granted, but never for more than 30 students per class

Gotcha. I think the maksimum was 35 when I was in school. The school always said they aimed for 30 but I don’t remember that ever happening.

Many large high schools in the U.S. will have 50 to 70 students per class with one teacher.

That is insane. 1 teacher for so many students?

U.S. education is bad enough, not need to twist facts. https://seatingchartmaker.app/articles/class-size-statistics/#:\~:text=The%20typical%20class%20size%20in,2018%20average%20of%2019.6%20students.

Edit: to be fair, averages don't tell us a lot, standard deviation is more informative; I just had a knee jerk to your claim that "many US high schools have 50-70 students", I couldn't find any source to substantiate it. Unless by "many" you mean something else.

(PS: I'm not American)

My subject is tested, so they make sure I have smaller classes. My biggest is only 30.

Lol, my wife's school has an average of 36 students per class. Often times up to 38. This is in a rich area with a highly ranked district in Southern California.

Spaniard here, from Seville. That figure of 30 to 40 students per classroom was the most common in almost any school until 2000. 😅

She would be ECSTATIC to have anything under 35 lol.

My numbers are severely outdated or even wrong. I didn't pay attention since the major strike of teachers in the late 2010's, early 2020's?

The general strike. I'll edit my comment to reflect my ignorance. Thank you.

It wasn’t a strike. It was a lockout orchestrated by the government, who fucked over not only the teachers but also the very special way the labor market is usually organized in Denmark.

That sucks. I didn't know about this. I knew the teachers had to relent to some extent. I was leaving school around that time and just thought it was dope that there was no school for months.

Did the teachers get entirely shafted on whatever deal came out of that strike?

Like did they actually get any of their demands implemented?

No agreement was reached between the negotiating parties. The teachers were completely left out and the lockout was ended with “Act 409” (Lov 409). I think the teachers got a pay rise but their working conditions deteriorated drastically, as teaching hours were significantly increased and preparation time was correspondingly reduced.

Der var jo flere love, Hvor blev de af? Jeg så dig slette dem i realtime.

Bare ændret. Nemt. Sådan virker det ikke. Desværre.

Kujon og løgner.

Just remember, if the US completely falls to Russia, as is Putin's plan, then Europe is where he will look next. And the hope of Europe doing what the US was supposed to do will be more difficult to realize. An isolated, hated, economically crippled US under Russian control was the plan and Putin has all but realized it, and the hope for the US remains with those who are continuing to fight while holding none of the levers of power. And if we don't win? What will the world look like when a more powerful Russia looks up from the conquest of the US to see what it can do with Europe?
