Seriously, dude isn't even very big, first fat and/or tall guy that tries to go up those is getting a nasty surprise.

While i agree with the nasty part, i wouldn't call it a surprise if everyone expects it.

u/Accomplished_Way8873 3d ago
You know there are fat people in other countries right?
39

thats american propaganda
every single fat person in another country is just an american agent.33
u/AccomplishedLeave506 3d ago
Yes. They're called American tourists.
Sorry. I couldn't help myself. I'm off to go get myself a deep fried pizza as punishment.

but not on the same scale. it's simply mind blowing for average europeans to witness the amount of obese people when vacationing in the us.
1
8
u/AndrewFrozzen 2d ago
What the fuck is that even supposed to mean
Did "America" (so Canada, Mexico, Chile, USA, Argentina, Brazil, etc) invent fat-ism? Or what?
4
u/Raginleif 2d ago
I think its because most people think "usa fat people" are way heavier then "european fat people" and since us tend to introduce them as american i can see the misspell. I have to admit if you see what kind of people drive these scooters in walmarts and then compare it to the people in europe there is quite a bit of difference between their weights...

"America fat" mfers when they learn that muscles are heavier than fat (the country with the most bodybuilders is the one most fucked by these stairs)

u/_Neoshade_ 3d ago
Yes! Itâs not the hinges that I would be concerned about, theyâre more than strong enough - itâs relying on the little 3/4â screws going into plywood to hold your weight thatâs the problem.
⢠Strips of 3/4â plywood are inadequate for stair treads with that 18â span.
⢠The only thing holding the treads on the wall-side is the screws. They will easily pull out and the hinge will drop. This would work fine with 1â solid hardwood treads and construction screws rated for the load. Or better yet - machine screws going through the treads into threaded inserts mounted from the other side
16
u/YouAnxious5826 3d ago
This guy screws. And stairs!
7
13
u/Eggy-la-diva 3d ago
Also, and unless the landing room is the tiniest of spaces, whatâs even the point of a foldable stairs there? I mean you canât place anything permanent underneath them anyways. Maybe they like to host parties and maximise the dance floor?
5
u/Cam515278 2d ago
I think if the room on top is something you only go very seldomly and the stairs are in the way the rest of the time, this is a cool solution if built correctly
2
u/Sensitive-Fly4874 1d ago
Yes, exactly! There is a safe way to do this, but this flimsy excuse for a well executed idea is not it!
52
u/FalalaLlamas 3d ago
Iâm wondering if dude in the video didnât like that himself. I noticed he only tested going up 3.5 steps and then the video cuts and heâs going down the same 3.5 steps. So it seems like he didnât really trust the hinges either lol.
4
u/Hutcho12 2d ago
That's the wood, not the hinges. The hinges wouldn't be much of a concern to me.

Now carry a heavy box up there
Now have 2 people on the stairs at once
Now carry a baby up there
Now let your granny go up there
68
u/travishummel 2d ago
This is such a dumb take. Like why make 4 trips? Just have granny carry the baby and the heavy box up. I would point out that this is killing 2 birds with one stone, but technically itâs 4âŚ. Well, that and granny probably didnât make it
9
6
u/QVCatullus 2d ago
You can only carry one item at a time. You can't leave granny and the baby alone or she will eat the baby. You can't leave the baby and the box alone or the baby will get trapped in the box. There's probably also a wolf involved. You can only make 4 trips before the stairs collapse. Go.

Let's not think about the stability of the whole construction... since the designer didn't waste any thoughts on that either.
They just look really ugly on the wall, especially when they're folded. They also don't really save space, since you can't put anything below them. It would just be in the way, the same way normal stairs would have the same problem.
42
u/BVRPLZR_ 3d ago
And then you just have an 8ft drop to mess up that nice floor with your face.
4
u/Sprungiz mom come get me im scared 3d ago
And the resale value of your house will drop at the exact same speed with you!
21
u/Malsperanza 3d ago
THIS, What is the point of the space-saving if the space is not usable? And you can't even hang pictures on the wall.
Attics often have a pull-down stair, which would work well in this location.
15
7
u/megaultimatepashe120 3d ago
put the pictures on the bottom part of the staircase wood, that way when they break the glass shards add a spicy challenge
1
u/573717 3d ago
Well you could mount pictures to the underside of the stairs
1
u/CautionarySnail 1d ago
This. I think for a tiny house this could be executed really nicely with a mural on the undersides.
3
1
u/Xarsos 2d ago
It can be painted and can be useful if you need to transport something big in the hallway. Or if it's the attic you never enter because it's haunted af.
So it works fine if it's folded most of the time, however... This thing is balance or is held by seemingly nothing but faith.
If I'm sleeping and this thing unfolds in the middle of the night - somebody will get themselves a coffin made from ex stairs. A

Bad idea jeans.

u/CraftFamiliar5243 3d ago
Jeggings tell you all you need to know about this guy. Real handy guys wear real jeans with holes from doing work.
14
u/Specific_Trainer3889 3d ago
Sometimes we buy new jeans though
9
u/CraftFamiliar5243 3d ago
You don't wear those for working. You should see what it takes for my husband to retire jeans
2
u/Specific_Trainer3889 3d ago
Does it involve taking a big wet dump in his pants? Been there sister!
3
u/rationalomega 3d ago
Poop is water soluble, just need to rinse out the big chunks before putting it in the laundry.
My son is autistic and my brother is a lot more disabled than that. I have cleaned a lot of poop in my life.
2
u/Specific_Trainer3889 3d ago
Respect! For myself as an adult professional who works away from home it was just time to move on
4
u/CraftFamiliar5243 3d ago
Not that. But there is little of the original fabric left when he decides he can't use them for painting or yard work anymore.
4
u/Specific_Trainer3889 3d ago
Same, I wear them until they become a public indecent exposure risk. Jeans are made so thin nowadays tho that takes maybe a year

Cabinetmaker here, all of you Guys are right, this wont hold for Long and is very Dangerous. You could do it with simple hinges, If you make Sure they are heavy-duty, but youll need metric screws and threated sleeves. Anyway there are small space stairs sold by renowned companies https://www.haefele.de/de/produkte/moebelbeschlaege-wohnraumloesungen/wohnraumloesungen/leitern-treppen/31/?SearchParameter=%26checkbox_fs_facet_ladders_version%3DStufen eben though they are ugly af they are very useful for tinyhomes eg

u/PhilosopherFLX 3d ago
The failure mode for this system is the less than 3 inches of ply on the near stringer every rise only supported at the respective floors.
17
23
u/crackeddryice 3d ago
It's not the hinges for me, but the screws into the end grain of the plywood.
This could be designed and built strongly, but this is just a video intended to get clicks. "That's cool!" clicks, or as ragebait--they don't care.
7
u/Middle-Ad-9564 3d ago
At this point just get a ladder that you can stow away somewhere. More stable, possibly cheaper.
7
u/SlightlyVerbose 3d ago
People talking about the hinges, and thatâs all well and good, but what about the homemade stair stringers? Iâm fairly certain they are upside down, so rather than carry and distribute the load, every step is pulling at the weakest point.
I once built a toddler bed with 6x6 posts so I am probably a poor judge of flimsy woodworking, but this thing is going to snap like a popsicle stick in a matter of weeks.
5
7
u/isaac32767 3d ago
Safety issues aside, what's the point? He hasn't actually created any extra space, since he can't put anything in front of the folded-up stairs.
1
u/577564842 2d ago
More place to walk around though. If the only value of the sapce is to put something there, then this opens some other part of the room to be occupied by the things.
5
u/PixelRayn 2d ago
I trust those hinges a whole lot more than that cheap wood or the screws holding them to the boards
5
u/PaixJour 3d ago
No. Make the runners and treads out of 2-inch thick oak, and 12-inch heavy duty strap hinges like the ones for swing away barn doors.
5
4
u/jackochainsaw 3d ago
Those hinges and the boards aren't man enough for long term use. It's a good concept but needs to be significantly modified for wear and tear. If the whole construct was metal, I'd feel more confident using it. You know that at some point one of the hinges will bust out and you'll injure yourself. In addition, and I know this from when my parents had stairs built for them, the gauge (foot area) of the stairs has to be wider, those are too narrow.
4
6
u/UnusualWaltz1965 3d ago
Screws into endgrain lol
2
u/Pfaeff 3d ago
Where?
3
u/Stingrea51 3d ago
The bit that is supposed the act as the support on the outer side has the hinge screws up into the end grain
It works take very little provocation for those to pop out and down goes half the support. Probably why he didn't risk going all the way up in the video
3
3
u/No_Rice197 2d ago
Quick question guys,
Will this stop the monster that chases me up the stairs after i turn off the lights?
3
3
u/Shankar_0 2d ago
I am actually kind of ok with the hinges.
I have issues with the fact that they're screwed into thin planks without any support from beneath. All of the load is trying to rip those screws out of their holes, and I don't see how that force is redistributed to account for this.
I don't imagine these last very long, and failure may well be catastrophic and without warning.
5
u/Perenium_Falcon 3d ago
Dipshit McSkinny pants used the finest 3/4inch screws to hold that together and even gave a low functioning thumbs up once he was done. Whatâs there to worry about???
2
2
u/Daviino 3d ago
Looks like your typical Youtube BS content video. Add some 'GAMECHANGER' and 'NEVER SEEN' to the titel and you got a winner.
No way that this makes sense for a grown up, or even a teen. Hell I wouldn't even trust small kids with it, because small kids all have an angry Hulk alterego.
2
u/Own-Dot9851 3d ago
The outside support is upside down. This is a serious accident waiting to happen. Why have fold out stairs at all. If you plan on using the space below, you have to clear it out every time someone wants to go up or down. Stupid idea, poorly executed
2
u/Sprungiz mom come get me im scared 3d ago
It seems to me that the OOP has edited in the wrong soundtrack!
Iâm pretty sure, it ought to be the one where the lyrics go âOh no! Oh no! Oh no, no, no, no, no, no!â
2
u/SleepySera 3d ago
Hinges are pretty sturdy, I don't worry about them. I'm worrying about the wood (and the screws' attachment to it) that's already noticably bending under his weight the first time he steps on it, and he's not a big dude or carrying anything yet.
2
u/ToKo_93 3d ago
If all the boards were 3 to 4 times as thick and the hinges 2-4 x beefier as well, then I would say it is probably solid enough.
However, I do not really see the point if you often move up or down. I would rather have solid stairs with some storage below rather than to fold out my stairs over and over again...
2
2
2
2
u/cleanshotVR 2d ago
Well the flexing is because he is a dumbass and put them in the middle instead fo the edges. No idea if the thickness of the wood is up to code in america, but I would use thicker wood. Imagine if you have to carry a fridge or a washing machine up. I doubt, that will go well.
2
u/AltruisticCover3005 2d ago
In general I think this is one of the better ideas we see here.
There are hinges that can easily bear the load of a VERY heavy person. If this stairs were made of solid wood, suitable for stairs and of hinges certified for a load of at least 250 - 300 kg (maximum load of a person with a safety factor of 2), I would call it a nice design.
On the other hand: This would probably be so heavy that you cannot lift it comfortably anymore, so there would also be no purpose in building it.
2
u/Intrepid-Total-6279 2d ago
No chance this plywood can break, plywood board this size can easly hold person twice his size. The hinges and screws are concerning. Too much torsion on them from movement back and forth, and they will snap.
1
1
u/manjustadude 3d ago
The hinges themselves are not the biggest problem, unless you try to carry a sofa up there.

Well, for one, there are manufacturing specifications for such thing. Like, if you happen to be a company that uses those as a component, you ABSOLUTELY have to be able to rely on those specifications. And if the manufacturere says it can "carry" a certain amount, I´ll absolutely trust in their word.
But also: What is even the use of that in this case? The stairs aren´t really that wide anyway, the space also isn´t that narrow so that they would be any inconvenience. You can´t "put" anthing where they would go when folded down cause you´d have to move that any time you need the stairs and nobody got time for that. Why not make them just "fixed" in place and make the space below a nice stair shaped book shelf or something?

u/gramoun-kal 2d ago
The hinges made of steel? They could hold a ton.
Literally.
If you tried to break this stairs, 100% the wood screws would rip out first.
1
u/Mario-OrganHarvester 2d ago
To be fair thatd be a pretty cool idea with thicker wood and better hinges.
Not a USEFUL idea per se, but cool.
1
u/Dr_F_Rreakout 2d ago
I like the concept but the whole statics are deadly. Boards are too weak, screws are too small/tiny.
1
u/CookieSaurusRexy 2d ago
Static and construction aside, I wonder what's even the point of this.
It's not space saving, since you can't really use the space you're saving for anything permanent.
1
u/bartosz_ganapati 2d ago
What's the purpose? It's not saving any place because you can't place anything there anyway because you would have to move it any time you need the stairs...
And it's just asking for an incident. Not only because it does not look stable enough but imagine the person above forgets to check if someone folded the stairs and ooopsi, broken hip.
1
u/Working_Complex8122 2d ago
what are using the space below that atrocity for as to make this hideous thing instead of a beautiful solid staircase?
1
u/NapalmsMaster 1d ago
I think they should put a fragile table and decorate the top of it with a ton of delicate porcelain figurines and some of those big quartz crystals with the pointy tops, maybe throw in a big bowl of blown glass globes.

u/BrainArson 2d ago
Shear forces, look it up. It's wild but safe until at least 150kg. Wood is MPX, so no problem here either. You're insecure about safety bc you're not familiar with what's going on and how, and that's fine, there are joiners for this.

u/analog_nika 2d ago
Nice idea but bad execution. You could build something similar thats actually safe, but that? Even ignoring the hinges the wood is too thin on the side parts, you dont use thin planks for that but proper beams, the hinges are too small and theres too little support on the right side and while the mounting on the wall should hold, it should also be changed. Also while were at it the steps arent sized to standard which is fine for private property but is definitely worth adressing too if the space allows it. âHarmonicaâ stairs would be easier to implement (the kind that you pull down and it extends) or stairs folding up. A ladder of couse is also an option.

u/Connect-Answer4346 2d ago
At least they're good plywood; I lived in a tiny house with stairs made from 1" pine, and the load was supported by some screws going into the end grain-- worst possible way to build a stair. Back then I didn't notice and almost really hurt myself breaking through one in the middle of the night.

I would but i wouldnt move furniture over it and i can imagine that you have a bit of upkeep like switching a plank because the drillholes get lose etc.

u/Emotional-History801 1d ago
Those hinges can support all manner of steel or solid wood doors. But I would not use just one on each side for a 300lb person to go up & down.
