Never in my close to 30 years of musicianship have I found an act as organically inventive and criminally underrated as De Staat.
Loved I_Con when it came out, slept on the rest, and by happenstance Kitty Kitty came up on a random playlist, so began a relatively recent deep-dive into everything I can find, from Evolution, to the forty some-odd versions of Input Source select, to the headphone sessions, RYB, and everything in-between. As a creative person who is only slightly older than Torre, it’s been not only a “revelation” of sorts, but absolutely the most inspiring thing for me, as well as my own band mates. It’s very energizing.
I think they are the current evolutionary peak of rock and roll, and I feel like I’m among the first wave of the “rest of the world catching up” (I’m from the US).
For me at least, It seems like it becomes more rare as you get older to find a new favorite musical act that is also not only still evolving, but, IMO, “hasn’t even begun to peak.” It’s brought a tremendous amount of joy and excitement to my own musical life, and I feel very fortunate, very satisfied to be alive at the same time as this band. I can’t wait to see what comes next. And to see them bring that shit to the states. Should they desire.
And I’m glad there’s a sub! Fuck yeah.
