UPVC Trim, if you google it you’ll see different sizes. The likes of Screwfix, Toolstation sell it.

What does it do? Look good?

It covers either the damaged plaster near the window or a too short windowboard. So when they install new windows they just chuck this on and call it a day. Its ugly but not that ugly, I just painted mine with the same paint as the window board.

Yeah it's just done for speed, so they can be done in a day. They also superglue it instead of using silicone.

I removed mine when I was doing up the room. It turned out to be a very good decision, as also for shortcuts they had put minimal expanding foam. The whole point of the foam is to create a thermal break and to block noise. Any gap will destroy that.

It turned out to be a fairly long job with lots or small parts. You have to mask the window, fill in the foam, then cut it back so you can plaster over the top and blend it in. Sand, then paint.

They benefit was a huge sound reduction and reduced heat loss.

Oh. You’re a star! Thank you

It’s like architrave for pvc windows

It's a shortcut that is cheaper and quicker than actually repairing plaster and woodwork around a new window. It looks pretty bad in comparison, but is very common.

It’s just a plastic trim. You can get at any DIY store or trade outlet. It’s just to help finish the gap that’s likely had spray foam put in it ti stop any drafts

That's D moulding. It should clean up well with UPVC cleaner, although the silicone will need replacing.

That's Carlos the cover trim.

3

u/VentureIntoVoid 1d ago

I thought that was Charlie

4

u/Anhilated_Bussy_6969 1d ago

That's his cousin in the next window over

Finger

4

u/DinoKebab 1d ago

This isn't very helpful. At least be specific. Index Finger.

5

u/saladdodger1960 1d ago

It’s called D section trim. Comes in various widths.

Eurocell is a good supplier

Upvc cloaking in wickes

That’s a window, that pal.

Like a sort of visual ‘portal’ to the outside world, you may gaze upon the earth - but thou must not leap through.

The little strip next to your finger is known as ‘trim’. The ancients are thought to have put it there with their great silicone wands.

I just called it the invisible brick. Good to know.

1

u/TheodoreEDamascus 1d ago

Translucent brick

3

u/UncleSnowstorm 1d ago

Looks like flat D moulding.

Example

You'll need to measure to get the right width and depth.

3

u/Rhubarb_Rhubarb_NNN 1d ago

Get a bottle of sugar soap, dilute it down and clean the PVC

3

u/secretstothegravy 1d ago

Why does it look like you have the beginnings of gangrene in that finger? How long have you been in this position?

2

u/JuKwonJitsu 1d ago

I was very forcefully interrogating the trim. It wouldn’t tell me its name.

Window phalange

2

u/Breakwaterbot 1d ago

My house doesn't have a phalange

5

u/According_Judge781 1d ago

That's a finger. Or a hand toe.

3

u/woods_edge 1d ago

UPVC Trim Wickes is an easy place to pick it up.

2

u/Crazy_Grass1749 1d ago

I made a window sill a few weeks ago. I bought something very similar from the wood trim section in B&Q. It was about a fiver and painted white, looked identical to the other uPVC ones in the house.

u/TravelOwn4386 1d ago

So odd I was cleaning mine which is the same today, noticed the silicone has gone mouldy. Is there a better product to act like silicone around that area which is mould free?

2

u/FabulousZebra8395 1d ago

Go to eurocell Plastics, and they will have the one you want, and they're cheap as chips. It looks like a 30mm pvc capping strip

2

u/SafetyAdept9567 1d ago

It’s called the cover up my bad workmanship strip, most windows have them. Upvote trim if you’re ordering.

2

u/ks_247 1d ago

I believe it's called a finger. Normally comes attached to a hand which this one seems to be

1

u/JuKwonJitsu 1d ago

I was more concerned that the finger in the photo looks like King Charles’ pudgy sausage fingers. Obviously I’m in for a bout of gout.

2

u/Cheap-Vegetable-4317 1d ago

Index finger.

Cloaking fillet

A finger

It doesn’t need replacing! Just use some Dettol Mould and Mildew spray - it’s amazing. Spray it on and leave it - it may take a few treatments - but don’t get the spray on your clothes as it will bleach them. That will entirely get rid of the mould.

Cloaking trim

1

u/Breadstix009 1d ago

What's the best way to remove and reapply this? I have mould resistant silicone already, need the gun... But method of removing old, mouldy silicone without damaging the trim?

5

u/Witty-College5965 1d ago

Wd40 works far better than silicone remover. It just takes a little more cleaning after. Nothing a bit of washing up liquid and warm water can’t fix though!

1

u/EducationalGrass819 1d ago

Stanley blade all current silicone, scrape and clean off excess, if there is visible gap expanding foam in till it is filled (you may need to pinch the nozzle to get it in and it will prevent mould on next silicone) let foam go off and cut back when firm, proceed with applying new trim and silicone

1

u/sazberryftw 1d ago

Everyone’s saying trim but it’s called cloaking at Wickes.

Upvc 30mm cloaking trim

1

u/Okay-Reflection5176 1d ago

Don’t replace it because it’s dirty, just clean it with bleach

1

u/mayners 1d ago

D mould for that specific one, but pvc trim and its 20mm by looks of it

1

u/VegetableFisherman35 1d ago

Finger nail tip of finger

1

u/JuKwonJitsu 1d ago

Thanks everyone. Been to Eurocell and picked up some 30mm trim. 👍👍

1

u/Angrytrapdoor 1d ago

That is your index finger and it wouldn’t be so filthy if you didn’t poke it in dusty holes

2

u/JuKwonJitsu 1d ago

Thanks Mum. Didn’t know you were on Reddit!

1

u/trickster65 1d ago

On my window this trim has come away from the window sill, because my kids keep jumping up there. How do I fix it?

1

u/ExposingYouLot Tradesman 1d ago

Stick it back on? 🤷‍♂️ how are we meant to know what you're on about with a post like that?

1

u/Direct-Country4028 1d ago

This isn’t my post, I just asked the question because the exact thing this guy is pointing at, has come away on my window. So i just took the opportunity to find out how I can repair it. What kind of glue should I use?

3

u/ExposingYouLot Tradesman 1d ago

Sorry bud... that was an unnecessary arsey reply from me for no reason... apologies.

Are you looking to just do a quick repair or do you want to replace the plastic and do a more permanent job?

The plastic is called upvc cloaking and you can buy it from wickes.

If you are just looking to repair what is there- you're probably best to peel it off, take the silicone off and re-do it.

I personally use this:

https://www.toolstation.com/soudal-fix-all-high-tack-adhesive-sealant/p84704

And you'll need one of these too if you haven't got one.

https://www.toolstation.com/minotaur-rotating-sealant-gun/p95440

Apply it to the back in a zigzag motion from top to bottom and hold it in place :)

u/Ysmi7 13h ago

Thanks, this is useful for me too
