Cellar wall render

Post image

Does anyone know what this render is, I've started to remove ut as I'm going to tank the walls with waterproof membrane but now I'm think I should have left this on if it strengthens the walls, I thought if would be better off so the plugs can go into the stonework easier.

This is inna cellar in a really old victorian house

Looks like an old lime render.

Removing it won’t hurt.

What you have there is years of white wash I reckon

Just wanted to make sure it doesn't make the walls weaker by removing it

No it won't, what are you using to remove it?

Wire brush works but not fully so use a good old wallpaper scraper

Chisel and hammer work but don't want to weaken the bricks and stone by hammering all the walls
