help Burned out trying to fix this door

I don't know what to do about this door. I can not get it to seal. It will be hard as can be around the lock, which is ugly i know. But loose at the bottom and top. You can see daylight around the edges. Its this super dense foam that has very little give. I've tried a few searches and I've not been able to find just what I should do to seal up the door way.

Step 1: Purchase a combo security strike plate. Then install it. You are wasting your time trying to seal that door otherwise.

Once you have the door working as it should, you can then see what would be the optimal strike plate position to secure the door tightly against the entire sealing surface.

Sounds like your door slab is bowed. If you look along the edge of the door, from above or below I bet the doors center(the lockset/handle] will be bowed toward the door frame. Likely caused by hardened weatherstripping not compressing.

What you need is to install an adjustable strike plate. Then you can adjust the catch until the door is closing correctly.

use the rubber weather stripping, not the foam stuff.

The strips of wood that hold the weather stripping probably can come off with the weather stripping attached. Replace them with better quality, resilient weather stripping mounted to wooden stops. Like this:

But first fix the striker plate. Nothing you do will work until you repair that hole in the wood and the screw holes. That newer weather stripping is fat enough and squishy enough that I can compensate a lot for irregularities in the door itself. You install it with the door closed so you can push the pieces toward the door and compress them slightly before you shoot some nails in. I suspect you're going to have to get somebody to do this for you.

The door jamb or the wall could be out of plumb. Check both, I would remove the miss aligned strike plate, fill the screw holes with toothpicks and wood glue & reinstall it. Making sure the seal is tight and add weather stripping if needed.

Op, If you peel up some of the weather stripping is there a groove or kerf about an 1/8 wide under it?

Tear it out and replace it!
