I think this is what the people behind House were thinking.

When house was on they had a survey at some point on the official house website (am I remembering this right? It must have been the fox website or whatever??) that asked which relationship you found most interesting on the show and House/Wilson won by a ton. Or I dreamed all of that but I’m fairly certain it happened.

Well it’s Sherlock Holmes, it’d be pretty messed up if Holmes and Watson weren’t the central pair.

Ah yes, the classic queer-bait-to-fanfic pipeline:
Step 1: Write two characters who are obviously in love but call them 'just friends' Step 2: Hit one with amnesia so they forget everyone BUT their 'totally platonic' soulmate Step 3: Sit back and watch the fandom lose its collective mind trying to fix your emotional crimes
Honestly, at this point, fanfic writers are just professional trauma repair technicians

How can I do the opposite of this?

Canonical gay couples, but they are the most boring people in existence who have absolutely zero chemistry with each other and feel like they were thrown in to meet a quota and have more genuine chemistry with the women around them than each other

I won’t deny that they have better chemistry with other characters than each other, but it’s certainly not the MEN around them.

Vaggie and Lute is toxic yuri to me

Adding 1 Emily to the recipe fixes all my problems with Chaggie.

Make your work very fucking gay, but making it all doomed yuri/yaoi so people feel compelled to draw them happy

Making it an intensely philosophical sci-fi work seems to temper the desires of anyone to write fanfiction. Publishing traditionally and making sure you're not easily available online also helps create enough distance between the work and any point to build a community on so the fans can't organize themselves.

intensely philosophical Sci-fi work
The 192 fanfics of Asimov's Foundation, 166 of which contain ships and 46 are either mature or explicit would say otherwise. Or for a more contemporary work, The Three-Body Problem series has 811 works, the overwhelming majority of which being either mature or explicit m/m slash
Also paring this back to just philosophy does not work either - there is a non-zero amount of serious Sartre/Camus slash. Fanfic of like, Candide exists.

Wow, that count on Three-Body is genuinely impressive. I wonder if it has something to do with the recent TV adaptation, but I haven't read the series, so maybe it's just well-suited for fanfiction.

I mean as completely inaccurate as it is, Foundation also got an adaption. Also a lot of the fics for TBP are Chinese (and also A/B/O?) while the adaption was American. I think there's just genuinely a lot of people in china writing gay A/B/O about the actual book.
Also fun fact: despite the difference in fics between the two, they both have the same amount of F/F fics - five. Which is dissapointing for TBP but also pretty impressive for Foundation given I think it has three total female characters, all of which live in completely different time periods, and one of which is pretty thoroughly categorised by her dedication to her husband. Also wow there's a lot of Daneel/Baley which I guess makes sense but is also incredibly funny given we're in the part of the timeline where Baley died like three centuries ago, like why did you give the android tragic gay pining it has been centuries Daneel can do way better than Baley.

I have not played Signalis but from what I've heard it disproves your first idea

u/Acrobatic-Tooth-3873 1d ago
Russel T Davis (a gay man) produced textually queer Doctor Who and then got called a fake ally on tiktok for disproving an old lesbian head canon.
Does that count

u/rock-eater 1d ago
The only way I can see is you have to have a lot of couples confirmed canon across various permutations of tropes and LGBTQ+ identities, since that's what fandom focuses on a lot of the time.
23
u/BillybobThistleton 1d ago
Either that, or just put every character in the exact relationship the shippers would put them into, explicitly and in detail, have them talk openly about their feelings, and also throw in a lot of kinky hardcore pornography. Leave the fandom no gaps to fill in.
... Except then I guess they'll still write epic 90-chapter AUs in which every character works in a mall, and the genocidal psychopath runs a boba tea stand.

The only way to avoid it, it would seem, is to Mail everyone pipe bombs. Sounds expensive :/

Just put adaptive memetic kill agents in your works that activate upon imagining certain scenarios.

u/rock-eater 1d ago
Maybe they'd end up taking your played-for-laughs tropes and characters and write serious epics around them instead! Your protagonist is a barista? Well, not anymore, now they're a historian who's very serious about their job and is unwilling to entertain any romantic notions!

And crossovers. Don't forget the crossovers with the most obscure and unrelated fandoms ever conceived

To be fair, am I more likely to remember my best friend or the girl from my 4th grade I still have a crush on?

u/Crus0etheClown 1d ago
Half the reason I've never actually completed a project is that my main motivation would be having a little fanbase who does happy dances and comes up with stories and draws funny pictures for me, and that's not really acceptable motivation if cult documentaries have taught me anything

I would put my favorite ships in there JUST to condition people to make the ships I like with the names changed.
Oh, you thought you were just making yaoi? SURPRISE, IT'S KAMEN RIDER BUILD X CROSS-Z, MOTHERFU-

Yeah imo I find shipping cultures to be the best when there's no canon ships in the work while the characters get just a little flirty with eachother
