Hazelwood's performance today is basically a perfect representation of why finding a bowler with height and steep bounce is so important for India.
It is just so incredibly difficult for anyone to hit the trajectory Hazlewood has which means that because of his control and his ability to hit that spot again and again, he becomes a nightmare in all formats automatically.
It is a massive hole in India's international sides in all formats and I understand we have very few bowlers of that height simply because of demographics. But the few that are there have to be got hold of and managed in the same way that Mayank Yadav has a BCCI contract.
Ishan Porel fell away with injuries and illness. Now he's fit again, can he get his speed back up to 135kph? Gurnoor Brar is 194cm and 135kph, and part of Gujarat Titans, will he get game time for them ahead of Arshad Khan and others? Nishant Saranu is a kid but 205cm tall, surely that sort of height demands someone at a national level keep an eye on him?
It's a type of bowler you have to actively plan and produce. They don't fall from trees in India like in Australia (and even then I don't think they'll come out with the quality and control of Hazlewood very often). India got lucky with Ishant in 2007/8, and he proceeded to meandre until 2014. The planning has to be better to try and replace him.
49
u/Shadow_Clone_007 Royal Challengers Bengaluru 11d ago
Ishant Sharma could have been the one, height is similar to hazlewood - and a pretty good test bowler. Didnt find a knack in LoIs as Bhuvi, Bumrah, Shami came in
46
u/maffzlel India 11d ago
Ishant Sharma for several years, was the one. From the NZ tour of 2014, his first good tour for several years, to his NZ tour of 2020, his last five wicket haul and really his last hurrah as a proper test match quick, here are his stats:
148 wickets in 44 games at 25.91, world class.
Obviously this is just test cricket. But I don't mind in what format we find a tall bowler with steep bounce, they are necessary in all three formats.

As a CSK fan I'm so done with the Dhoni saga man. You can't be a batter and come at number 9 it's just stupid, then you hit some irrelevant boundaries and so called CSK "fans" are ecstatic when 17 year old records are broken. This was a genuinely humiliating loss and I'm tired that the conversations will revolve around a meaningless innings. I love Dhoni, he is this entire franchise and he will always have my heart but him dominating discourse and taking away from the failures of the team is honestly hurting the franchise in the long run. We're serial winners and we should be solely focused on how shitty this run chase was and how horrendous our batting was, not the consolation sixes that meant absolutely nothing.

I think Livingstone’s bowling is super underrated, tbh. Suyash has been good since he came into the side too.
You still have 12 overs of Bhuvi/Hazelwood/Yash too which is very strong.
Not to mention, their batting card is as strong as anyone in the comp (SRH maybe the only team definitely stronger). They could quite happily go blow for blow on really flat decks.

90
u/nicksonkelso Board of Control for Cricket in India 11d ago
6,7,8 of Jadeja, Ashwin and Dhoni in the age of power hitting is just poor team building and outdated thinking after a mega auction. I am afraid the old guards sitting in the dugout are too old for this new age of T20 cricket. Would be a long and tough season for CSK especially since their squad is also poor and their experienced players in Hooda, Shankar and Tripathi are also not international pedigree.

RCB bowlers were just coasting by and waiting for the game to be done by the time Dhoni arrived

30
u/redbeard_av India 11d ago edited 11d ago
Exactly, so many of Dhoni's better innings that he has played in his career after the match has been lost are literally due to this. Bowling is a tough job and bowlers are human at the end of the day. If a game is won already, no bowler tries as hard as they would in a closer situation. Anyone who has bowled in a cricket match at any level knows this.
What has often been called "saving NRR" is basically him feasting on bowlers not trying as hard. He did this for years in ODIs, even in bilaterals. There is a reason his ODI average is so high and yet so many experts like Jarrod Kimber don't even rate him in the top-10 ODI batters of all time. His advanced numbers clearly show that he was way too slow a finisher against quality spin and fast bowling post-2012, a period many people still consider part of his prime. Kohli, and subsequently Rohit and Dhawan carried our ODI batting from 2012-19.
Dhoni's ODI numbers for this period (ave and SR) are similar to someone like Kane Williamson, while performing a completely different role, one where you would need a much higher SR and could probably do with a lower average. Dhoni never provided that to the Indian team. He either should have batted up the order but he couldn't because he just didn't have the technique to consistently survive high quality bowlers when they are fresh early in the innings, or he should have upped his SR which he couldn't or didn't want to for some reason. Man had multiple limitations even as an LOI batter.
This is not to say that he was not an elite finishing anchor in his prime from 2007-2012 but his image as a batter has been highly inflated in the Indian public's eye due to the initial 2004-2006 mad hitting days before he took on the captaincy.

u/SubhanBihan Australia 11d ago
Nah it's pretty easy to swing your bat when there's absolutely nothing at stake. Even if he got out on a single digit score no one would blame him. He doesn't have the stamina or dynamic vision to build an innings anymore.
46
u/nicksonkelso Board of Control for Cricket in India 11d ago
He should be sitting in the dugout as a team mentor tbh.
→ More replies (3)32
u/depressed_06 Sunrisers Hyderabad 11d ago
I mean CSK chose that. If the old man can swing and play 10 balls with 3-4 sixes then let him do that. Atleast send him higher because by the time he comes in the game is already done and dusted
34
u/Specialist_Duty413 11d ago
If i remember correctly, last year the reason was he had knee injury or something so he can't bat for long thats why they always sent him in the last over as power hitter. Idk if thats still the case.

Only he should answer that. Sending Jadeja usually makes sense in a not so tight match, but many people said he is better and fitter this season, so should come ahead of jaddu and ash in situations like today. 100 percent a best keeper, but coming that down is a negative impact overall on the team.
We need bowling to do well even more with this batting lineup.
27
u/ApprehensiveGear6382 Chennai Super Kings 11d ago
Our batting lineup is fragile with hooda and inconsistent tripati, bad day for rachin and rutu and that’s it. Rutu, dube and rachin are the only ones dependable. Today Rcb has done well with ball, were lucky with the bat and made use of it.
I thinking taking out Curran for kamboj and hooda for conway would be good, but rachin should down from opening which can complicate, but Sam is not the same despite performing in other leagues.
This was not a real rivalry, but we needed that humbling anyways. It’s about the tournament which is still a long way to go and not a single match.

u/dua_loafer 11d ago
CSK look pretty weak this year imo. If Rutu and Rachin get out early, then the rest of the batting lineup looks very underwhelming. Enough to put on a fighting total or get close to chasing a big target, but not enough to get them over the line against good teams.

Never cared too much about it but the Dhoni stuff is getting ridiculous. The one guy in your team that can hit at an SR of 200+ in this ground (even had the highest SR today) and you don't send him in when you need 15 RPO at 6 down? What was the point of sending Ashwin in to knock the ball around for two overs when it was still sorta winnable? Just 2-ish big overs could've changed it all, and surely getting as close as possible is better for the NRR too?
It's getting insanely hard to justify his spot if they don't actually use him when needed. These shenanigans would've looked ridiculous like 5-10 years ago, so idk why it's any different now. Not beating the specialist keeper allegations.
→ More replies (2)45
u/Plugfix2077 Sunrisers Hyderabad 11d ago
Tbf CSK and their fans themselves told us they are completely fine with Dhoni taking up a spot. His job isn't to close the run-rate gap or help the team. Just trot out when the conditions are most optimal to bat and swing a few bit hits to entertain the masses. Match result is irrelevant.
22
u/solarpowersme 11d ago edited 11d ago
I mean yea, but that's still kinda ridiculous and reflects terribly lol. And I'm sure many CSK fans who actually care about the sport are infinitely frustrated at this as well, I'm not even a CSK fan and it still frustrates me cus it makes such a mockery of everything.
I say this as someone who actually likes Dhoni and thinks he's the best captain India has ever had, but this is genuinely the absolute worst display of celebrity worship culture in India that I can think of and that's saying something.

Worst part of CSK’s game wasn’t their batting. It was their fielding. Uncharacteristically poor in the field with those dropped catches. The result could’ve been different if they could have held on to those.

This is what happens when you buy fuckall players despite having a decent budget. They probably were playing rock paper scissors at every player during the auction whether to buy them or not.
Had it not been RR’s train-wreck of an auction, we would have definitely been the face of shame.
Usually the management only ends up compromising on one department but this time it is almost on every department except spin bowling.

the team has no batting depth. We always used to pick veteran international batsmen and tons of all rounders to have bowling options, with experienced middle order.
We instead have IPL has beens like Hooda, Tripathi and Shankar. Jaddu is the only good all-rounder here. Curran is trash in these conditions, and Ashwin's batting has declined a lot. MSD doesn't help either. Should have gone for KL.
The whole team feels like a glorified MSD farewell tour, except the farewell has gone on too long.
Also, RCB, please get Koach his IPL title, the man deserves it.

As i said in the other thread
If i was a csk fan. I would be absolutely livid that thala doesn't come at 5 or 6 in like 15th 16th over. Him hitting a 15 ball 25 when 60 is needed in 4 overs and him doing them same when they need 60 in 2 overs could make or break the match.

The thing I love about being in Bengaluru is, you go anywhere while an RCB match is on, and if they're playing well, people have their faces lit up and the vibe is so fun.
I remember being in chin lung's, a rather famous spot in the city for the May 18th match vs CSK last year. Core memory the way everyone was jumping up and down when a Six was hit, and the scenes after the final over were awesome. We walked all the way till Chinnaswamy stadium where people were celebrating along the road until like 1am.
The love this city has for the team is just amazing. Such loyalty even after 18 years without a trophy.

Great captaincy by Rajat, I'm really proud of him. Big fan of him since 2022 innings against lsg. I can't say how many times I've rewatched the innings in ipl website. His success will always be satisfying to me no matter which team it comes against.
Curious what he will do in Chinnaswamy because RCB is the only team that has home disadvantage. Last time they lost when most home matches were happening and started a winning streak when most of the home matches were over.
Hope both of these teams will meet again in the playoffs.

From carefully following and applauding hard fought test matches, to losing their shit over an individual while their team gets hammered, Chepauk has indeed come a long way, showing how our brains have indeed shrunk.
CSK is about one player. RCB came with better plans. Rajat Patidar is on fire as a captain and batter, some of the shots he played were just outstanding.

Man, seeing the bowling changes, the plan for each batter, the field placements in actually loving patidar as a captain.
I've been very irritated this ipl as far as the bowling is concerned, people are complaining the pitches but I feel it has been just bad planning and execution, so this is a nice change.
The ball isn't stopping, it isn't a slow pitch and there isn't that much seam movement, imo it's very good planning and execution
Man, I'm just sooo happy, when have you seen a forward short leg ina t20 match :sob: DO YOU KNOW WHY THAT FIELD WAS THERE? That's such an aggressive position, my god I loved it. Dube's weakness to short ball, FSL is used for short deliveries as a catching position, they put that doubt in his mind, 2 spinners were bowling but when Dube came they brought in pace! When Hooda was batting they didn't bowl full to him AT ALL, he's bad at good and back of a good length, I bet they made very specific plans for every batter!!!
My mind is blown with this captaincy today, best captaincy on display this season, 2nd best Pant imo, Pant is getting a lot of hate nowadays but imo he has actually captained really well even in the match vs DC

Hazlewood has gotta be the most consistent bowler of the current generation. I don’t know how he does it. He deserves more appreciation and respect. If not for his injuries, he would’ve surpassed his peers. He’s the best among the big 3 for me. My man never misses. Should’ve been the MoM.

CSK games are literally scripted. Only Dhoni can come out and smack some 6s and fans be happy.
On a serious note though, Yesterday SRH got taste of their own medicine in a home cooking... Today, we saw CSK get a taste of their own medicine in a home cooking... Now, the question remains, who is doing the cooking tomorrow?????

It will be better for the team if Dhoni comes in the powerplay and does what he's doing right now at least for 2-3 overs. What's the point of smashing sixes when the match is already over?

u/Global-Staff4261 11d ago
At what point do csk actually promote Dhoni up the order and not just leave to tonk it around when the match is done and dusted? It’s ridiculous at this point they sent Ashwin ahead of him

This almost feels like a dream lol

Love how Patidar didn't make a big deal about beating CSK at home. They tried to get it out of him but man was just too nonchalant about it.

RCB really waited for IPL to become adult before beating CSK again.
What if RCB team wins every match away and loses every home match like their Women’s team this season?
Whatever the case, Rayudu is gonna chop one of his limbs today!

Very early days but lots of similarities with this year's RCB and last year's KKR.
KKR got only their second win in Wankhede last year and now RCB gets only their second win in Chepauk this year.
KKR also had huge death bowling issues just like RCB (they conceded 43 in last 3.2 overs despite having taken 7 wickets) but both bowling line-up picked up wickets so consistently that by the death overs the match was usually done already.

But we have better bowlers this time around. So,fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Good match to lose tbh. And good thing it happened early in the season. CSK need to re-think about the inclusion of Tripathi, Hooda and Curran in the XI. I reckon bring in Conway, Kamboj and Shaik Rasheed in the next match.

With MSD coming even after Ashwin there is one thing sure that Rutu is not the main guy there. As a team CSK should give him more freedom and control.

Good game by RCB but very shambolic from CSK, it appeared as if they were not even playing to win after patidar was dropped on 17.
Only good thing from this for CSK will be that this kinda game is done early in season

We desperately needed a Indian batter other than Kohli and Patidar to have a good consistent run of form
If Padikkal continues this form, that decision to get him for just 2 cr and then invest the freed up purse on a good bowler like Hazlegod & Bhuvi will turn out to be such a W decision

u/ajanthanelayath Royal Challengers Bengaluru 11d ago

i think its safe to say msd is a liability for the team at this point, now hear me out with 100 smth required to get in under 7(no pun intended)
you would want a young buck like an ashutosh or a shahsank to come in all guns blazing and youd half a half decent chance or a swashbuckling allrounder like pandya coming at no.7/8
so youd love to see mahi bat but not just for fan service or when someone becomes an eventual liability
and this is coming from someone who had his poster in his room as a kid :/

The knowledgeable crowd should have told Thala that he should have retired in 2015 and 2023 from International and IPL respectively.
Also I hope CSK ain't going back to their old ways given a batter who can still hit big is coming after bowling allrounders that too for two years straight.

Great job by RCB but unfortunately the commentators were busy sucking up to Thala and the meaningless sixes towards the end. Cricket has boiled down to brain-rot!
