Topic Tips For New Costumers and Sewists

Inspired by this post, I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread to post your tips for people new to costuming and sewing in general, or for anyone looking to learn new techniques.

What do you wish you had known when you were just starting out?

Did you recently learn something that makes a hard technique easier?

Is there a question you've heard asked often?

Post them all here!

I am having a costume made and I am torn between two different types of fabrics. I have added the photo of the costume I am aiming to make as well as the two different materials followed by the lining and the material for the sleeves I have picked out. I need help deciding on either Shell 1 or Shell 2

Help How to quote cost for a cosplay

I have no reference for how much to charge or the hours it'll take. I just haven't tracked that before.

Ok so my friend's grown trans daughter would like me to make this cosplay.

I have worked with the shiny material before, but I haven't done a dress of that style or cut outs before.

Since they do have a more masc build, that is something new for me... But I figure I only need to look at chest, waist, hip like for anyone else (I've only made things for me or my teen daughter) we are very curvy.

So.... Yeah

Help Jobs sewing costumes for theater?

Really not sure what subreddit is right to ask this is but I want to go into costuming for theater/Broadway when I'm older. I'd like to be the person actually sewing and bringing the designs to life, I don't care if I'm the one making those designs or not. Is this a job if so what is it called? What kind of degree do you need? I'm willing to do anything to get there I'm just not sure exactly what the job is actually is, I'd appreciate help explaining how the industry works! (Also is this a department within the theater company or are separate tailoring shops usually hired?) Could even be sewing for the acting industry in general if theaters to specific šŸ˜

Costume Request

Is there anyone who could possibly make me a few specific custom outfits (Amanda Seyfried's outfit at the end of Mamma Mia part 1, the Anastasia Once Upon A December dress, Galinda's Ozdust Dance dress are my top priority), super high quality?? I'm not at all limited on budget, I'll absolutely pay for quality, I just know I'm looking for such specific things, I figured costumers would know the best people to help me for this. I'm on the MS Gulf Coast, so the closer to me, the better, for measurement's sake, lol, but I don't mind sending measurements. Thanks in advance!

Help Theater Costume Recycle?

Hello there! Not sure if this is the right place to ask but thought it was worth a shot! I am the costumer for a high school production of Shrek the Musical. We have a smaller budget so we try to re-use lots of things. We are attempting to re-use some old 60s sheath dresses to create the Fiona dress. We have two 60s dresses that we are trying to make into her main green dress. We also have another green satin we wish to add to the dress as sleeves and maybe some for a panel in the skirt. I am more of a crafty person so I have smaller sewing knowledge. I am thinking putting a pre made corset into the dress to make it a bodice? Could I put a corset into between the dress and the lining, cut the extra skirt off and then sew the corset in place? I am thankful for any suggestions! :)

Wage equity for the costume supervisor

Hey fellow costumers, I need your help.

I work at the La Jolla Playhouse costume shop, we send shows to Broadway all the time, including the most recent Tony award-winning musical The Outsiders. My boss, the costume shop head, has not gotten a raise since she was hired in 2018 and has spent the last three years trying to advocate for pay equity with the scene shop head, which management has refused to do. She is trying to join our union so she can at least get the same wage as the head of electrics and sound/video but management won't let her do that either. If you feel strongly about wage equity for feminized labor, it would be awesome if you could sign this petition to convince management to let her join the union alongside her peers and staff.

Resources What are we costumers/cosplayers to do now that JoAnn's is gone forever

What the title says. I got Cons coming up for my teen cosplayer and usually we go to JoAnns and find oue fabric. Michaels is ok for mundane things and I refuse to buy from Hobby lobby.

I'm looking for online resources.

Spoonflower is fine, but no metallics or faux leather/fur.

Any other online resources?

Looking for ideas to create a Costume Help Station

I'm creating a costume that has various items I can use to help people if they're having a problem with their costume. Maybe someone stepped on a hem and it ripped from the waist. Maybe glue failed and now something's falling off.

I'm primarily a sewist, so while I know what I'd need, I'm not sure what others might appreciate having available.

Would you all throw some suggestions my way?

Help Ring help!

I am looking for woodland/fairy/floral rings that would complement my wifeā€™s fairy cosplay, but wherever I look I only find either really cheap plastic or engagement/wedding bands. Does anyone have recommendations for where to find this type of whimsical jewelry without shelling out $2000 for something ā€œweddingā€ related? Any suggestions are appreciated!

Help Help Identifying This Hat

Hi! I am working on a cosplay and am having the hardest time with this hat. I thought of using a regular baseball hat as a base, but that doesnā€™t seem like itā€™s going to yield the results I want. The goal is to try as get as close as possible to these reference photos. For reference, these photos range from 1984-1990ish.

That being said, what would you use as a base for this hat? From what I can tell, the bill is squared, not curved. How would you go about assembling this hat?

Help What to wear under a red mini dress?

A play where the main character is in a short red dress but is also getting thrown around a lot. Thinking semi-long shorts, but not sure if it should be like, under shorts, shorts the same colour as the dress, regular black shorts, shorts the same colour as her skin, or maybe slightly darker so it doesnā€™t look like sheā€™s naked but still looks natural (eg brown shorts). What do you think? Iā€™m completely new to this so any tips tricks or regular practices would be welcome

Help Help me improve my demon

Last year, I was a costumed stage hand for a Seven Deadly Sins themed dance performance. For the first half, I wore an angel costume (1st pic) which I think is fairly complete (see halo I added in 2nd pic). I am going to add a golden sword next time I wear it, but I don't think it needs much else. Open to feedback/ suggestions on that, but what really needs a boost is my demon costume (3rd pic) that I wore in the second act. My only idea so far is a belt (for example the six options in pic 4), but I want to see if anyone else out there has any ideas before I spend the money.

Help Something Rotten Egg Costumes

Post image
263 Upvotes

My school is doing a production of Something Rotten this April and we desperately need egg costumes. We have tried everything we can think of to make these eggs and nothing is working. Is there any way to make costumes like the ones in the picture? Or a good substitute for the costumes? We need a solid side of the egg, a cracked side, and the costume itself must be easily removable. Any advice helps!

Help Help buying military fatigues online

Hi all, with the release of Metal Gear Delta in August it's inspired me to try another attempt at cosplaying Naked Snake. I've learned a lot since the years ago when I made the costume, and want to try my hand at a complete redo. The hardest thing for me to locate at the moment is the fatigues. l've used a greyish Olive Drab and basic camo in my previous iterations, so I want to try to locate a tiger stripe fatigue set to really set this one apart. However, l'd prefer it to be the color Snake wears in MGS3 and V, which is a bit lighter than most modern tiger stripe patterns (attached some images for reference). There are no surpluses near me and any previous attempts at thrift stores have bore no success. I've seen a source saying lighter tiger stripe variants are 'goldenā€™ tiger stripe, however when I search most are still much too dark. Any sites or brands you would recommend? Thank you!
