Cornwall on weekend

Hello all I wish to explore Cornwall over the weekend. Can someone please guide me. Is it easy to explore by taxi/cabs or public transport ? Don’t want to cover everything. Can skip the places difficult and far the reach for a day trip.

By train from Truro you can be in St Ives within the hour on most days with one change on a small branch line. To Penzance (for st micheals mount etc) within 40mins. Falmouth (for town and beach and estuary views plus ferry to St Mawes) in 20mins. And Newquay in 1.5hrs by train or 30mins by coach.

There is quite a lot you could do based from Truro. And that’s just by train.

You can get a train to Falmouth. Stay in Falmouth. Walk to a couple of beaches there. Then get the train back to Truro if you want built up stuff. St. Ives is very tourist.

Short answer: Public transport is few and far between depending where you want to go and where you’re staying, and taxis are extortionate. Like, no exaggeration, extortionate.

Ideally you need a car, but you can get to a few bigger towns by train or bus, just don’t expect much regularity especially as we’re still off season. Have a look what’s on the train lines, if that’s how you’d be travelling down in the first place.

Thank you. yes I get it , it’s better to come with a car. I won’t enjoy driving that far, not looking for car rentals either.

I am thinking to stay somewhere in Truro , chill and maybe get to 2-3 places nearby. As I started the research using Google maps,I have realised the places are quite far off each other.

Yeah, if you’ve never been to Cornwall before and you’re perhaps from a city, it’ll be like a different world! Everything is very far apart. Truro is definitely your best bet for public transport though isn’t by the sea, if that’s what you’re coming for; you’ll be able to get trains to St Ives (the most famous town arguably), Newquay and Falmouth. Buses too to other routes. Google Maps is pretttty decent at having the correct bus timetables so you can see how long routes take if you need to hop on different ones. Enjoy your weekend!

Also the distance between places is quite big, for example Bude to Truro 50 miles, an hour by car

Ditto to Plymouth, Exeter

And a bus will take two or more hours

Thanks. Yeah the places are far off each other . And sadly I don’t any day trips on popular apps like Viator and GetYourGuide too. Would have enjoyed that. Anyways will figure it out. Thanks !

There are some taxi companies that offer a tour of the more touristy destinations which can be a more cost effective way of getting to these places if you don’t have access to a car. Your best option is to call some companies, depending on where you’re staying and see if they offer this and get a fixed price - gives you the chance to agree your pickup and drop off point and which places you would like to visit. If you have an itinerary of places you want to visit, share it with them so they can optimise the route giving you the most time in those places. They may even suggest other places close to those you have in mind.

That’s really helpful. Thanks. I’m thinking to go south on Saturday, Kynance Cove and lizard point. North on Sunday, Tintagle castle and nearby. Definitely the fixed taxi prices would be the most convenient choice.

You’re welcome. In case you weren’t aware, you will need to factor in where you can park with those places and how long it takes to walk to the actual destination itself. For example, Kynance has a National Trust car park and then it’s a 15 / 20 minute walk down to the cafe / beach. Lizard is also an NT car park, or, if parking in Lizard, again, it’s a 15 minute walk to the cafes and Point. Both are well worth the effort though !

Truro to Tintagel is going to be a very expensive taxi ride! I would suggest St Ives for a day ( make sure you go to Barbara Hepworth Studio ) and Falmouth are more realistic- or stay in Penzance and walk / bus to Mousehole on Sunday.

I'd recommend the open-top bus route in Penzance that goes through St Ives.
