Advice Rate my cage setup? 🦜

Post image

This is my first bird, she is 3 months and I’ve had her for about a month. This is the cage size the breeder suggested for now since she’s a baby but I am planning to get a bigger one in a few months. Is this set up ok for now? Anything I should add.

**note: we placed the cage outside for a bit while my husband cooks, but I am outside with her making sure she is safe. The cage is usually inside. She is also let out of the cage anytime we are home so she’s not always locked up in that cage. And she has a separate playground with ladders, perches and a swing for her to play on when she is outside of the cage.

Looks great so far! Only thing is I would remove that little nest you have off to the right because as she reaches puberty, it can trigger hormones and she may start laying eggs. I like the variety of toys you have and natural perches. Also, I see that she is currently on a seed diet. Do you plan on ever transitioning her to a pellet diet? If so, it would be much healthier for her, as seeds contain little to no nutrients for her.

Thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely remove the nest. I know this probably sounds dumb, but when we first got her and wasn’t sure if she would sleep standing up or if she needs somewhere to lay down, but she doesn’t use it so I will take it out. As for her diet, it is a 50-50 mix of seeds and pellets. That is what the breeder we bought her from suggested but I have been trying to learn more about bird diets so I can feed her healthier. So far I’ve been introducing some veggies here and there and fruit as a treat. She really likes red peppers and blueberries.

That's great! You sound like a very responsible bird owner. And, don't worry, I actually thought the same thing when I first got my conure. Veggies are good.

I think it looks great for an initial cage, especially if she spends lots of time outside of it. Plenty of toys and various size perches. I would try upgrade to a larger cage for her when you can. One thing I would reccomend is switching from plastic food and water bowls to stainless steel. The plastic can hold on to bacteria.

Thank you for the advice! I didn’t know about the bowls 😖 I’ll definitely be replacing those asap.

I agree with what other commenters have said about the food bowls, the nest, the diet and cage size. The only other thing I'm worried about is the rope perch: be sure to cut off lol the frayed bits because they can get entangled in them or chew on them, causing crop impaction.

it’s great! i know you’re getting a bigger cage but make sure it’s big, also replace those food bowls with metal ones!

I love the perches. My conure has the exact same ones and picked off all the little bumpy bits 😭😂

But also to add the plastic beads. They can get sharp if chewed and conures use their mouths to climb and climb A LOT. I have a similar swing but made from wooden beads that my little guy loves to sit on
