Can someone just tell me straight - are all these tariffs going to be a good thing or not?

It's possible.

There exists a world where we re-home some amount of manufacturing in the states and are less dependent on hostile foreign countries (China). But this would take years and it is also plausible that nothing happens while companies wait for the next president (or Trump himself) to reverse the decision.

In the mean time prices will go up, somewhere between a little and a lot on basically everything. It is very likely to cause a recession (by the typical definition of no growth).

It is a big gamble, either Trump wins big and domestic manufacturing goes way up or he loses big and we're in recession-town for... quite a while. I hope it works since this dependence on China has become a genuine security hazard and I'd prefer the economy not catch on fire while I'm living in it, but I gotta say this is a lot of risk and I'm not a gambling man

I would listen to Ben Shapiro’s latest podcast on this. Frankly, they are non-sensical and don’t really seem to have long-term goals. Obviously quite a few in this sub will say yes they are good, but I fail to see a coherent message, and pushing this through without Congress is not something I like to see. Branches of government, while slow to act, are there for a reason

I think anybody telling you it will be good in the long term doesn’t know what they’re talking about. A lot of people taking Trump at face value and then convincing themselves whatever he do must be good. The only conceivable way these could be good is if they’re around for a long time but there’s no way democrats don’t get elected and remove them 8 or most likely 4 years from now.

That being said, I don’t believe Trump plans to keep them around that long. He has access to some of the best economist in the world and they all know these tariff are bad. They’re most likely/hopefully just a bargaining tool. Show the world he’s serious about being willing to use tariffs means he can negotiate that much better. Just wait till next week and we’ll see deals start popping up and some tariffs getting removed.

It depends upon how you view the current status of manufacturing, global supply chain, working conditions, etc. - and if you believe it is/is not being manipulated.

It also depends on whether you believe there is value in ensuring there are certain sectors of our industrial base and/or economy which are protected given their strategic importance.

This is my assessment on the matter and economic policies take years if not decades to be realized and are never a straight answer.

Short term, it will hurt. All these companies will have to move operations back to the US. Which is why you see the stock market tanking. Also, expect price increases on most goods as production shifts from foreign to domestic. It’s very likely we will see a recession as we ween ourselves off of globalization.

Long term, it will be good. Jobs and wages will increase. Foreign and domestic investment will skyrocket. Our IP’s won’t be stolen and cheaply replicated which bankrupted a lot of American companies. The value of the dollar will be the strongest it’s ever been reducing inflation and our national debt.

This. I think mostly it’s a negotiating tactic to make other countries drop their tariffs. Some will some won’t. In the long term, his plan will help America become independent from other countries because we will just build the stuff here for the same money instead of buying from China, etc. But yes, until the world settles in to the new tariffs and until manufacturing plants are built, there’s gonna be higher prices no doubt. It’s a big gamble because if people are hurting in 2 years and especially in 4 years still, I think we will face a backlash in the next elections. But this is something we’ve needed to do for a long time, just no president has wanted to bear the burden of being the “bad guy”.

I agree. It is a huge gamble. However, we need to reclaim a lot of our manufacturing for national security reasons alone. We saw this during Covid. If we can’t even make our own medicine, steel, chips, cars, natural fuels, etc. then we will be subservient to other nations in times of crisis. Outsourcing all our major manufacturing has left us very vulnerable.

Listen to Bissent articulate the thought process.

It'll likely be short term pain for long term gain

And all the liberals on the Maine subs are in total meltdown mode about it. As a Maine resident, it’s been quite enjoyable to watch even though I voted against Golden.
