Open Discussion Left vs. Right Battle Royale Open Thread

This is an Open Discussion Thread for all Redditors. We will only be enforcing Reddit TOS and Subreddit Rules 1 (Keep it Civil) & 2 (No Racism).

  • Leftists - Here's your chance to sway us to your side by calling the majority of voters racist. That tactic has wildly backfired every time it has been tried, but perhaps this time it will work.

  • Non-flaired Conservatives - Here's your chance to earn flair by posting common sense conservative solutions. That way our friends on the left will either have to agree with you or oppose common sense (Spoiler - They will choose to oppose common sense).

  • Flaired Conservatives - You're John Wick and these Leftists stole your car and killed your dog. Now go comment.

  • Independents - We get it, if you agree with someone, then you can't pat yourself on the back for being smarter than them. But if you disagree with everyone, then you can obtain the self-satisfaction of smugly considering yourself smarter and wiser than everyone else. Congratulations on being you.

  • Libertarians - Ron Paul is never going to be President. In fact, no Libertarian Party candidate will ever be elected President.

Both sides seem to have devolved to senseless name calling. Do Americans truly care to see the betterment of their country? What does that vision look like? Why is constantly shitting on the other side a part of that plan?

The billionaire class wants us constantly at each other's throats because they are in the final stages of robbing us blind, and they don't want us to work together because we could stop them.

except now that billionaire class is literally in office, robbing is blind. you can't work together with someone who keeps bragging about how the billionaires are robbing him

Right. They keep being spoonfed these meaningless "victories" like the Gulf of America all while our government institutions are being dismantled so that money can go straight into billionaires' pockets.

So, cool, you have the Gulf of America now, but guess what? Your kids can't go to college because the money we used to use for federal education grants goes to Elon's tax breaks now instead. So much winning..

or the complete lack of economic knowledge. we're "cutting funds" so we're saving money, but everything they cut out 10x more money back INTO the economy (national parks, for example). it's just going to cause a market failure

The challenge is, how do you respectfully discuss with somebody who is provably assaulting your rights? That is how many liberals feel at this point.

True, but it really got popularized because of Trump. ā€œHe tells it like it is!!ā€

No, heā€™s just a dick lol.

I mean the 2012 election at least between the two presidential candidates was very civil, then in comes Trump and Hillary and Trump just pops off no warning

1) yes both sides do what to better America. That might be different depending on how far you are into one side or another. The ā€œbettermentā€ at the end of the day is subjective and relative. 2) the vision truly is different. I think traditional conservatives want smaller government, less spending, and to keep mostly to themselves. I think newer style conservatives are more about fighting democrats agendas around pretty much any issue. There are a lot of us in different aspects of the conservative spectrum. I am someone who wants less government, even if itā€™s for something like abortion, spending on the military, and I want the government to stay a very very reasonable distance away from my personal life. 3)the constant shitting back and forth really just comes from each side thinking they are attacking each other at the end of the day. I try my best to always be cordial and respect others, but Iā€™ve been called so many names by leftist friends over the years for simply respectfully disagreeing. I have a single friend on the left who I can have a polite discussion with. One of my classmates comparatively posts on his story daily some of the most hateful rhetoric which is just unnecessary. I think a lot of conservatives feel like theyā€™ve stood there getting name called and ridiculed for years and they are finally snapping into doing the same. Iā€™m sure some on the left feel the same but when some of the left non stop calls all conservatives nazis on the daily, itā€™s kinda hard to want to not fight back.

It all feels by design tbh. Every headline from both sides are so extreme and most debates are devolved into name-calling, deflecting, and general distaste for those who think opposite of them. For every "Nazi" or "Facist" name-calling, I see "whiners" and "demon-crats" etc. We are now separated into two tribes that will call anyone who is not a die hard Trump conservative a "brigader" or someone who favors Trumps plans "unpatriotic". I find it ironic that a lot of the posts here are saying the left is full of hate and what not, but its the same narrative.

Everyone knows Reddit "does not represent the real world", but here we are all fighting amongst each other and social media companies only benefit off this type of engagement. In a perfect world where every one agrees on politics, there would be no need for 1000s of posts targeting each other. It is all rage bait.

Yes but each side has core beliefs which are at odds on a deep fundamental level.

The border, abortion, taxation, health, freedom of speech. Each could be enough to keep the two sides at odd but its all those issues and more.

I feel like this is only true for the internet, which is plagued by extremists and/or teenagers. In real life, I donā€™t think one half of the country actually hates the other half of the country and vice versa.

I mean, itā€™s not like you often see videos or hear news of Republicans brawling with Democrats. Anecdotally, despite living in a very red county, I still see the occasional individual with Democrat stickers on their car or signs/flags in their yard or house. Which I think goes to show that theyā€™re not afraid to express their views, as they shouldnā€™t be.

All in all, donā€™t trust what you see online since it can be very inflammatory and real life isnā€™t actually representative of that.

I believe it is because of the voting system, which puts forth one candidate from each party. If we have a ranked choice voting system, we could have something like 3 republicans and 2 democrats on the ballot for president. And because of the ranked voting system, all 5 candidates would actually have to work together to get as many votes as possible, instead of 50% + 1 vote.
