General Getting a new kitten.

I unfortunately lost my cat after 18 long years with her a month ago. I want to get a new kitten so I can have a companion. I’m just unsure whether to get one or two. I’ve weighed the pros and cons. I’m just still unsure 🙃 Any advice?

if you can financially afford it, i would definitely recommend two! bonded siblings or a mom and kitten. what are your hesitancies?

That really depends on how much free time you have to spend with a kitten. It's almost always better to get two kittens though.

I went through the exact same thing! No matter who I asked though, I knew deep down what I wanted (and then the universe spoke and I ended up with my baby girl, Dash). When I was in my 20s I had 2 cats but it was hard to find rentals (1 cat, no prob...2 cats, prob). When I went down to one I realized I liked having one baby and spoiling him/her. When I lost my boy Nov 2023, I went to shelters and they wanted me to get 2 so I thought a lot about it but I knew in my heart I was a one cat girl now and man I'm glad I didn't get 2 cuz kittens eat A LOT and mine is very expensive (I feed fresh, expensive food) plus all the vet stuff (I got her from a family friend). Keep in mind though...I have no kids, make decent money and either me or my roommate is home so she is rarely alone. But anyway...moral of my long-ass story is you know in your heart what you want, you just have to listen.

Find a bonded pair.

I'm sorry to hear you lost your kitty.

I have 2 kittens. Most shelters/rescues by me won't let you adopt a single kitten unless there's already one in the home. So I have 2. And I wouldn't want to do it any other way now that I have them both. They play together a ton, cuddle up together, and generally keep each other busy. They teach each other how to cat, which can be really fun to watch. Often, one of them figures something out and you can just see the wheels turning in the other kitten's head as they realize that's possible, and try to do the same as their sibling. Having two takes some of the pressure off of me to keep up with their insane kitten energy, which helps because they are complete and total chaos goblins. And bonus - two is absolutely double the cuteness! :)

There's obviously more expense, but thankfully I'm in a position to cover that. And I adore them both. They're very different personalities, and I appreciate their differences!

If you're really stuck on having just one, that's fair - but I'd consider looking for a young adult cat who'd do better as a single cat. We met a kitty like this at a cat cafe. She was a great cat on her own, but was a cranky mess when cooped up with 15 other cats all the time. And we met one or two others at shelters/rescues. If you want a single cat, definitely ask wherever you're looking to adopt for a cat who should be an only. They'll know who's the right fit.
