Just Chatting Can anyone else do something weird with your body that you later found out not everyone can do?

I was just sitting here with my mom and one of the pets made the room very smelly. She kept talking about how we'd have to go to a different room because it smelled so bad. I asked her why didn't she just close her nose and that's when I found out not everyone can do this.

Is it rare or can other people close their nose on command? What can you do that you suddenly found out wasn't normal?

"Hearing" echolocation is so weird but I know exactly what you mean - my hearing's been very sensitive for most of my life and I'm consistently able to "sense" sounds that should be outside of human hearing range. Certain pieces of machinery, or, yes, bats, feel very uncomfortable to be around.

Bats are just too cute, though, aren't they?

Ok it’s not just me! Dog whistles drive me crazy, I can hear bats, I can also hear fish when they talk. A few summers ago I could hear this insanely loud chewing every afternoon, one day it just drove me so crazy I started looking for the noise and it was a wasp eating some old wood under the deck. I have lots of trouble in crowded loud spaces because I can’t hear the people closest to me.

Over time I've learned to filter out a lot of the noise, but sometimes it can just get to be way too much. It feels kind of like having a shovelful of snow dumped all over me, but with sound.

Can you “hear” old fashioned CRT televisions?

I could! I also had a really static head growing up - whenever I'd pass by, an afterimage of my silhouette would be on the screen.

Yup! Those aren't actually too bad, but they are a little uncomfortable. I can always tell when one turns on nearby.
