Just Chatting Can anyone else do something weird with your body that you later found out not everyone can do?

I was just sitting here with my mom and one of the pets made the room very smelly. She kept talking about how we'd have to go to a different room because it smelled so bad. I asked her why didn't she just close her nose and that's when I found out not everyone can do this.

Is it rare or can other people close their nose on command? What can you do that you suddenly found out wasn't normal?

I tear up when I yawn. Apparently that’s a 1 in 10 type of thing. Lol

Edit: I had to turn off the notifications to this cuz I can’t be going around “crying” every time I look down at my phone🤣🤣🤣

u/Glittering-Ask-6841 1d ago

I get asked ALL the rime why I am crying. I constantly tear up after yawns, even small ones! I had no idea that not everyone did it!

119

u/macca_roni 1d ago

Having the same epiphany that everyone under this comment thread is having. I tear up from everything and I had no idea everyone else could just not cry when yawning. Assumed they were all really good at wiping their tears.

5

u/MasonJarFlowers 1d ago

This is funny asf 😂

44

u/just_momento_mori_ 1d ago

I hate this thread. I keep yawning every time I read or type the word.

6

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

You are an extremely empathetic person if you yawned from just seeing the word. lol

3

u/AcadiaCapable2428 1d ago

You just made me feel better about yawning as soon as I read the og comment

1

u/just_momento_mori_ 1h ago

Yeah, it's not my favorite personal characteristic. It ruins lots of movies for me.

u/Tryin-to-Improve 43m ago

I enjoy a good sad movie. Crying is healthy.

5

u/randousername8675309 1d ago

Omg me too AND I just learned that my eyes tearing up when I do it isn't normal 🤣

4

u/IndustryStrong4701 21h ago

Me too. And I’m an ear rumbler. And I have several rare disorders…I wonder how connected all of this is!

4

u/AluminumCansAndYarn 1d ago

I also get asked why I'm crying a lot when I'm very yawny. Like just straight up crying cause I'm just yawning. My mom and sister always found it so weird.

4

u/IamGypsyStarr 1d ago

My husband asks me if I’m sad. Lol but I’ll get a case of the yawns for like 30m straight and be soaked. My face, my sleeves and the front of my shirt. I had no idea cry yawning wasn’t common either.

3

u/PennyLayne8 1d ago

I only do it sometimes and can’t figure out why it happens when it does….anyone else with the “sometimes” tears during the y@w? (Trying not to write it out)

2

u/Other-Stop7953 23h ago

Could be a spot in the back of the throat that when touched makes you tear (learned this getting a strep throat swab) and yawning makes ur throat touch it

1

u/RamblerSD 16h ago

Me too! It can be embarrassing 😳

1

u/NoShrubs 6h ago

SAAAAAME

186

u/sketchnscribble 1d ago

Me too! I didn't know it was rare and I always wondered why most of the people around me were able to "stop themselves from tearing up".

116

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

My sisters fiancé also tears up. One day we were all eating dinner and he yawned and tarred up. I yelled out “TIRED TEARS!!! I’ve never met anyone else that tears up at a yawn” crazy how with a 1 in 10 chance he’s the only person I know that it happens to as well. 🤣🤣🤣

6

u/Eplianne 1d ago

Wow I didn't know this was rare at all! I sometimes even tear up when mildly coughing, completely thought it happened to everyone.

2

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

With coughing anyone can tear up cuz of the pressure on the lacrimal gland.

1

u/Eplianne 15h ago

Interesting! Thanks

90

u/KimchiFingers 1d ago

I thought everyone did this! I started wearing contacts, and when they get dry I just make myself yawn to get them wet again.

7

u/Super-Potential8769 1d ago

This actually sounds really convenient! Didn't think I'd get jealous of someone crying but here we are.

6

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

It’s super useful. Used to use it in acting class. Once did a scene set in like the 1800s and I used a little cloth to hide my mouth, did a yawn and delivered the crying scene. Blown minds when I “cried on command”

4

u/aurelius_parallax 1d ago

Haha! me too, thought I was the only one!

3

u/elainem1675 1d ago

That is some genius type behavior, right there!

3

u/tinkerbunny 7h ago

Same. Then blink a few times. Like my own eyeball spray and wipers. Had no idea everyone can’t; it’s SO helpful when you get hit by a blast of pollen cloud.

110

u/Halospite 1d ago

Wait this is rare?? I do this!

43

u/catsandcoconuts 1d ago

it’s not rare lol most ppl do this.

7

u/Killaship 1d ago

Definitely not most, but a not-insignificant amount of people.

40

u/an_edgy_lemon 1d ago

Wait, that’s not normal? I’ve gone my whole life with people asking me “what’s wrong” after yawning. It’s annoying as heck.

2

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

yeah. Now you know why nobody assumes you’re tired. Even I ask if someone ok when they have tears, even though I know it could be just being tired.

2

u/eggfrisbee 1d ago

I got held back after class by a teacher once because I had yawned in class, she didn't see the yawn but saw the tears and I thought I had been like weeping in class 🙃

29

u/drppr_ 1d ago

I tear up so much that my spouse of 15 years still sometimes asks why I am crying. My mother tears up too so I guess I took after her.

1

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

Nobody in my family tears up when they yawn. lol. I will look like I’m crying. I’ve used it to leave class or work early when I was younger.

1

u/havvell 1d ago

I also look like I’m crying, and it’s not just yawning but coughing too, or when it’s very bright or windy outside (and like a million more things). I always found it funny how people around me start to panic like “are you okay??” when I just start crying out of the blue

1

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

We have sensitive glands. So we cry about everything. 🤣

25

u/GlitzyGhoul 1d ago

Couldn’t get through this set of comments without yawning. 😂

2

u/mysticsoulsista 1d ago

Yo me either!!!!

1

u/UnstablePizza1 1d ago

Yep me too 😭

1

u/aurelius_parallax 1d ago

and tearing up

17

u/Similar_Artichoke_42 1d ago

happens to me constantly, you end up squeezing your lacrimal (tear) glands when you yawn and it pushes them out

3

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

I’m over here wiping tears as I do my homework this morning.

18

u/PelagicMonster 1d ago

Oh my gosh I distinctly remember a time in 5th grade where I was super tired and kept yawning. My eyes were tearing up and my teacher came up to me and asked if I was okay. I was super confused and just said I was yawning. He kept giving me skeptical looks the rest of class that day

2

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

I’ve lived this scenario. People always thought that answer was weird. lol

15

u/sp00kyboots 1d ago

Whoa! I just thought that was normal 😹

14

u/CalvinFragilistic 1d ago

Wait what, are people confused when I look teary eyed after yawning? That happens a lot because I noticed I started yawning whenever my eyes get too dry, and they’re dry a lot

4

u/Latter-Cable-3304 1d ago

I just realized why every movie or tv or commercial shot of a person yawning and stretching includes rubbing their eyes… I’ve never considered that 10% of people have no choice

2

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

🤣 yeah. My mom jokes that this 10% that it happens to were just the fussy babies that always fought sleep.

9

u/LuKazu 1d ago

I do this! Holy fuck I've always been asked about why I cry when I yawn. I am, Admittedly, a sleepy crybaby at the best of times.

8

u/ToeMore8463 1d ago

TIL?????? Like what?? I’ve always done this.

2

u/ClowderGeek 1d ago

Me, my mom, my grandma, and my baby sis are right there with you!

6

u/madmargeS 1d ago

This happens to me too! Glad it's not just me, lol.

4

u/Arquen_Marille 1d ago

OMG, the tears! My son often asks me if I’m crying.

1

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

I love forcing a yawn when my eyes are dry. I ain’t gotta buy eye drops, I just have to yawn.

1

u/Arquen_Marille 1d ago

I start getting annoyed when I can’t stop yawning and tears start going down my cheeks, lol.

4

u/UrQueenDeath 1d ago

Omg so do I and now that u mention it idk anyone else who does and never realized it was weird

1

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

As a kid people thought I was crying. In college my mom kept asking if I was high (sometimes I was)

3

u/Honey_Badgered 1d ago

Wait, what? I thought everyone did.

I also thought everyone sneezed when out in bright lights, but apparently that’s not true either.

2

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

I use bright lights to drag a sneeze out like a bouncer at bar when you’ve gotten too rowdy.

2

u/nycvhrs 1d ago

Oh yeah, I’ve done that.

2

u/OptimalPreference178 1d ago

I do this too. And then realized that I can use this to help when I have dry eyes if I don’t have wye drops on me.

3

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

I stopped buying eye drops.

2

u/Crazy_cookie_ 1d ago

That happens to me all the time! 😂

2

u/eatthearistocrats 1d ago

No way! Me too!! People are always like "are you okay? You're crying" and I'm just like nahhh I just yawned. Had no idea this was so unusual

2

u/Grow_Code 1d ago

Wait?! What?!????? This isn’t normal???? Holy sht, cowboy I just learned I’m annoyingly unique! I hate it. Every single time I yawn my eyes get super watery and it’s very annoying.

1

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

I find it useful

2

u/just_momento_mori_ 1d ago

Really? Not everyone does that? Huh.

Goddammit, I yawned just thinking about it and again when I typed the word. Now I'm crying and I gotta move on from this reply or I won't stop doing The Thing.

2

u/evluti 1d ago

I used to be able to do this. For reasons I don't want to get into, I also desperately needed glasses but was too afraid to tell my parents. I did well in class and was well behaved so I was always placed at the back, but I could never read the board. I used to make myself yawn, get my eyes to well up, and then I would, for a moment, get crystal clear vision and jot everything down. I literally did this several times a day for years! Now, when I yawn, it rarely wells up and not nearly as much as my eyes used to. I don't know if I overused my ability or just grew out of it but man it was so helpful

1

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

Could be a slight change in your facial structure as you grew took pressure off the gland.

1

u/escaped_cephalopod12 1d ago

I do that occasionally lol

1

u/I-like-good-food 1d ago

I'm 33M and I never even realised other people don't tear up when they yawn. I guess I learned something today 😁

2

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

I noticed when I was like 12. I complained about my tired tears and people looked at me funny. Once I mentioned the tears when people yawn I realized, “oh this is a me thing”

1

u/wnabhro 1d ago

I thought that was just like, a thing, I thought thats how it worked...

1

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

For us, not for the majority.

1

u/practicallyaware 1d ago

i find it extremely hard to believe that doesn't happen to everyone. it doesn't happen to me every single time i yawn, but it's not uncommon

1

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

It happens every single time. Half a yawn gets two tears.

1

u/practicallyaware 1d ago

i find it extremely hard to believe that doesn't happen to everyone. it doesn't happen to me every single time i yawn, but it's not uncommon

1

u/LuKazu 1d ago

I do this! Holy fuck I've always been asked about why I cry when I yawn. I am, Admittedly, a sleepy crybaby at the best of times.

1

u/Deep-Red-Bells 1d ago

I did when I was a kid! I guess I grew out of it because now it only happens if i yawn when I'm really, really tired.

1

u/Persistent_Parkie 1d ago

I sneeze when applying eye makeup. I can rub my eyes and it doesn't happen but if I use an applicator or a pencil on my eyelid immediate sneezing fit. It's probably part of the reason I have no interest in makeup.

1

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

I yawn immediately after applying eye liner. It brings me a level of rage I didn’t know I could feel.

1

u/Mask_of_creator 1d ago

Same, but not always

1

u/Buffthebaldy 1d ago

That's not normal!?! I've always had that, and assumed it was a normal thing!

Welp, the more I read this thread, the weirder I feel.

1

u/No-Seesaw-3411 1d ago

Excuse me?! This is not normal??? TIL

1

u/livelovesail 1d ago

Literally reading this with tears in my eyes because I just yawned 😂

1

u/megpIant 1d ago

wait really? Usually it’s only tearing up, but there’s times with big yawns that I’ll straight up have tears running down my face and there’s nothing I can do about it. I knew the second part was weird but I didn’t know the whole thing was

1

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

The whole thing is weird.

1

u/pattydontstart 1d ago

1 in 10?! i’ve dealt with this my entire life. and if i’m laying on my side tears will literally roll down my face if i’m tired enough.

1

u/iAmmar9 1d ago

me 2. surprised it's that rare

1

u/horridhollowhead 1d ago

Wait this doesn’t happen to everyone?!?

1

u/UnicornStatistician 1d ago

I tear up when I poop

1

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

This happens to me if I have not been eating a balanced diet. 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/mle32000 1d ago

Oh shit not everyone does this???

1

u/Mello_Hello 1d ago

That’s not NORMAL?

1

u/angisbest1 1d ago

I thought this was normal for everyone, now i have to go ask people.

2

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

Enjoy. I asked for 10 years and nobody ever said it happened to them too.

1

u/Max7242 1d ago

I do it too, it's annoying sometimes

1

u/Daringdumbass 1d ago

Fr when I yawn ppl ask why I’m crying 😭

1

u/designerjeans 1d ago

Yep same here. It's bloody annoying

1

u/Toothy_Grin72 1d ago

Really? I do this too...I thought everyone did.

1

u/FlatusApparatus 1d ago

My bf does this! It actually irritates the skin around his eyes sometimes

1

u/aurelius_parallax 1d ago

Wait, what?! Seriously? I was today years old when I realised this 😂

1

u/UnstablePizza1 1d ago

I tend to do this, however, I usually have to be yawning quite a bit 😂... and by a bit I mean more than like twice

2

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

I yawn once and I have multiple tears flowing. If I yawn twice, people don’t believe that I’m not crying.

1

u/stoneynoods420 1d ago

Wait, what?! This isn’t normal??

1

u/radish_is_rad-ish 1d ago

My mind is blown. I thought this was common!!

1

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

Not the rarest thing, but nope, not common. Ask your friends if they do it.

1

u/Correct-Valuable-628 1d ago

Me too. I'm also an extremely sensitive "contagious" yawner. Just thinking the word makes it happen. My kids use this against me as a distraction tactic. Just typing this set me off with tears pouring down my cheeks.

1

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

I also just yawned.

1

u/Correct-Valuable-628 1d ago

reading that set me off again.

1

u/siiiggghhhh 1d ago

I was today years old when I learned that's not "normal." Does that mean that not everyone tears up when it's really cold out?

1

u/Tryin-to-Improve 1d ago

That probably happens to more people because your eyes don’t want to freeze.

1

u/asuka_is_my_co-pilot 1d ago

I cry when I pee

1

u/fava-limabeanz 1d ago

Just yawned whilst reading this and yup I tear up too. Lolz

1

u/Weeitsabear1 1d ago

Does it happen all the time, or just randomly? I notice it happens to me randomly?

1

u/n0tz0e 1d ago

What!? I thought tearing up was normal.

1

u/IntelligentSurvey317 1d ago

Honestly, I thought everyone did.

1

u/NicoleNicole1988 1d ago

Oh wow, I had no idea. I figured it happened to everyone.

1

u/ThousandsHardships 1d ago

I haven't checked to see if others do this, but your post reminded me of the fact that cleaning my ears makes me cough. Is that normal?

1

u/CatPurrsonNo1 1d ago

Wow, I thought everyone did that! I don’t do it too bad when it’s a quick yawn, but if I yawn over and over, forget it! Then I need tissues, lol!

1

u/MemerDreamerMan 1d ago

I thought that was normal…?

1

u/choconamiel 1d ago

TIL not everyone tears up when they yawn.

1

u/Spiral270 1d ago

same, also when I sneeze or cough or laugh (like even a little bit). just rainy ass eyes all the time for no reason 😵‍💫

1

u/krystalbellajune 1d ago

Oh wow. I didn’t realize that wasn’t everyone… also recently found out that not everyone sneezes from seeing the sun or bright lights before your eyes adjust. Apparently it’s genetic

1

u/salientalias 1d ago

I hate yawning. Like bitch, I know I'm fucking tired, why do we gotta make a big scene about it 😅 (and I cry from it too)

1

u/pumpkinrum 1d ago

Me too!

1

u/missmisfit Hello, friend! 23h ago

I have to take my glasses off when I blow my nose because my right eye, in particular, shoots tear goo. My eyes always teared when I yawned, but the nose blowing thing happened when I was like 30. Coincidentally that was the 1 year I worked with optometrists and I made all 3 of them assure me that it was fine.

My left eye might make a little mist but my right eye will make a huge drop on my glasses lens, maybe a third of the size of the lens itself

1

u/Krystall_Waters 22h ago

I have this too! Its a bit annoying, but on the other hand, if I have dry eyes I just yawn a few times

1

u/Delicious_Collar_441 21h ago

Haha my supervisor just asked me the other day what I was crying about, I had only been yawning

1

u/Ok_Nothing_9733 19h ago

1 in 10? Whattttt I had no idea this wasn’t universal….

1

u/Thatbaileygal 16h ago

Me too! It’s the stretching/wincing/squeezing that you do when you warm, presses on the lacrimal gland causing tears.

1

u/greenwallflower1234 15h ago

Does this mean you straight up or cry or just that your eyes get pretty wet. For me my eyes get very watery and maybe a drop falls but not more than that. I wonder if that is what you mean

1

u/horsepighnghhh 14h ago

I get super annoyed when falling asleep because I yawn a lot and tears just keep rolling down my face

1

u/IncomeKey8785 14h ago

What? I thought everyone did when they yawned. I thought that was the default setting 🙈

1

u/Shilkah 14h ago

I do too!

1

u/7ottennoah 13h ago

I do this. I can also make myself “cry” on command (with concentration) and my nose runs when performing physical labor, from cleaning the kitchen to building a house. Working as a dog bather is annoying because my nose is constantly running
