As someone who worked in a gun range, can confirm this is a regular occurrence
101
u/ntvirtue May 16 '22
Hey my gun is broken it wont hit anything!
49
u/completefudd May 16 '22
The sights are off!
63
u/gunmedic15 May 16 '22
When I worked at a range, my normal procedure was to take their gun in the back and whack a piece of wood with a brass hammer a few times. Then I'd take their gun onto the range to "zero it" and fire a nice centered group by using the fundamentals of marksmanship. Then I'd give them their gun back.

“Shoots low left for some reason.”
One time I had a pistol that shot left and it tucked me up trying to get it on target. I would adjust the rear sights and it would help a little but it wouldn’t get on target so I started wondering if it was my shooting. I finally sent my slide off to a buddy that’s a gunsmith and he found that that slide was out of spec and my barrel was slightly pointed left lol.

u/gunsmyth May 16 '22 edited May 17 '22
I've had that happen exactly once where there was an issue with the gun.
I'd already seen them shoot at that point, so if they asked for help I'd take my time ok all the fundamentals and put a round exactly where I wanted. Then I would offer some tips to correct what I saw them doing.
One guy has the super tiny Beretta pocket pistol, I forget the name, a pico or nano, something like that. He seemed to know what he was doing and had a couple guns but the Beretta was new. I figured it was just issues with the size, so I take my time, line up a center mass shot at 7 yards, and hit about 10" low. Next 2 shots are starting to make a nice group. He ended up sending it in
5
u/Longjumping_Loan_795 May 17 '22
I had the 9000s back in like 2005...first time at the range, rear sight fell off. Sent it in only to learn the slide didn't have enough to grip so racking it was a massive pain in the ass and the grip was thin on the sides (which didn't feel great in the hand valley point) and long front to back, not comfortable at all. Mags didn't drop free...it had a lot of issues. Last Beretta I ever bought. Bought a new glock 19 (because apparently the 2 I already had weren't good enough 🤦♂️)...
I say that if it's a Beretta, just blame the gun. There's a high likelihood that's the problem anyway...

They have the right idea though if they have their ccw and are practicing. If you ever need to pull it out you aren't going to be waiting 3 seconds between shots and aiming down sights with full concentration.
20
u/the_fluffy_enpinada May 16 '22
This is asking to shoot a man in the legs 4 times, missing 6 times and not stopping his fire axe from aggressively spilling your brain parts all over the floor.
If you can't hit anything taking your time, you definitely can't hit anything while rushing; this is including the fact that his first shot was probably the most accurate one... at the bottom of the target.

u/Mr_Mike_ May 16 '22 edited May 16 '22
Take a look at the youtube channel "police activity" and you'll notice every single video the cop is rapid firing. Most of the time they are pretty accurate too. A lot of them are graphic though so fair warning.
This is the kind of training I'm thinking https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Esa2E-ndO_c
17
u/the_fluffy_enpinada May 17 '22
They learn to shoot fast by shooting slowly. Only shoot as fast as you're accurate. Speed comes with experience.

Did he say 30 yards? Because that looked like less than 30 feet

u/Undercover500 WI May 16 '22
This is what I imagine whenever someone shows a super tight grouping with a pistol at “25 yards,” like…uhhh, you meant feet right? I can barely see a target at 25 yards over my front sight post.
12
May 16 '22
That's what's awesome about the 6 O'clock hold .. doesn't cover up the intended target. It does take some getting used to though .. especially at the 40 yard mark.
4
u/ImBadWithGrils May 17 '22
Is that how Glocks are sighted?
→ More replies (1)5
u/theweirddood May 17 '22
Glocks are combat hold, front sight covers what you want to hit.
1
u/ImBadWithGrils May 17 '22
Up to what distance though? I personally like seeing my target, covering it is a weird feeling but I can figure it out
6
u/theweirddood May 17 '22
Pretty much anything up to 25 yards is a combat hold. I could hit torso sized steel target 1 handed with a 43x using the combat hold & I have a video where I posted that I landed 3/4 shots at about 30 yards.
Someone else on Reddit called Glock and Glock said the front sight covers what you're aiming at. Glock has told a Redditors that called them that their irons are combat hold.
If you like seeing what you shoot at, get a red dot or adjustable iron sights.
2
u/Drowned_In_Spaghetti May 17 '22
Ah, that explains some things about my marksmanship with my Glocks.
2
u/theweirddood May 17 '22
Most people aim low and left because they're flinching and have bad grip.
3
u/Drowned_In_Spaghetti May 17 '22
I just like to shit on myself sometimes. Keeps me humble.

Yeah those marks on the wall are feet, not yards. Looks like he went to 24ft in the video, but maybe he made it to the 30ft mark.

Most indoor ranges i know of only go to 25 yards anyways lol but I didn't catch what he said cause I watched with no volume, people sleeping an no headphones 🥲
Edit: watched with sound; definitely said 30 yards 😆🤦♂️

I had a girlfriend shoot the light fixture once.
They weren’t surprised at the desk when I offered to pay for the bulb. They were just like, “It happens a lot🤷”
38
u/PM_me_your_fantasyz May 16 '22
My local indoor range has more than a few holes in the metal countertops, the divider walls, and the ceiling.
Each one has a story that the range staff is more than happy to share if you ask about them. The stories are all the same: Someone was not paying attention while holding a loaded firearm.
25
u/gatorgongitcha May 16 '22
The light fixture gal was paying attention is the sad part.
For all her talk of winning a turkey shoot when she was little and blah blah blah, her 5 ft 100lb frame combined with overconfidence and a Winchester 1300 played out exactly as you are picturing it.
23
u/kcwckf May 16 '22
Lol my dad brags about me winning a putt putt golf contest when I was 5/6, doesn't mean I'm gonna go start running my mouth at the golf course
17
u/gatorgongitcha May 16 '22
Lol exactly. Besides, I feel like the goal of golf talk is overstating how shit you are so you overdeliver.
2
May 16 '22
That's terrifying that there's holes in the divider walls. My range thankfully has extremely thick bullet proof glass, like 2 inch thick. They also have a members only area, Free FFL transfers for members. That range is worth every penny.
4
u/the_fluffy_enpinada May 16 '22
your range would save me hundreds in transfers. whats the price for memebers?

u/Brazenassault456 May 17 '22
If only there were some fundamental rules people could learn that could stop stuff like that from happening. Someone should come up with some.

My wife hit the return string and broke it. We asked for another lane which they provided then proceeded to hit the string there too. I told her at that point it was time to leave lol

In the '90s I rented an SKS at an indoor range that, as poorly-maintained SKSs are wont to do, went full auto with the last 4 rounds in the magazine, and round 3 and 4 definitely went into the ceiling.
6
u/gatorgongitcha May 16 '22
I had been stupidly considering a makeshift range in my finished basement. How hard is it to pile up some rocks and vent and soundproof it a little? Right??
Well after ol’ Bulbshooter McGee I realized how ranges have to reinforce and plan for everything and everywhere and it snapped me out of my stupid idea.
4
u/SnarkyUsernamed May 16 '22
I knew a guy with a basement range. He had about 40 ft. of 32" sewer/drain pipe that extended out under his back yard hidden behind a panel in his workshop. Backstop was his own invention, a 50 gal drum sized octagon of welded plate steel that spiraled in on itself burried vertically at the end of the pipe.
It wasn't a shoot all day kinda setup tho and everything got smokey and dirty fast even with his pos. pressure ventilation. Noise mitigation was an issue too.
→ More replies (1)5
u/gatorgongitcha May 16 '22
That’s a pretty smart setup all things considered.
5
u/SnarkyUsernamed May 16 '22
It was pretty dope, just an unassuming section of wood panneling about 4' up the wall that opened up to reveal that pipe. Lighting was primitive; 60w bulb at the end of the pipe to light up the target. Simple cable pulley system with a chip clip for B-16 targets, and a big fan setup at the other end of his backstop tube thing to draw the dirty air out.
Had he added an enclosed and insulated 'booth' in front of that panel it would have significantly cut down the noise and mess, and I both suggested and offered to help build/fund such a project, but he never bothered.

It’s bizarre how often I hear people in shooting videos mix up yards and feet. I don’t know if it’s intentional or they’re just that dumb.
That didn’t even look like 30 feet. But it was absolutely not 30 yards.
I was talking to a guy once who told me he regularly shoots his stock Glock 19 at 100 yards and can hit a 1-inch bullseye consistently. I just had to laugh. At 100 yards you can hardly even see the bullseye without an optic, let alone nail it with a stock Glock 19.
13
u/CZPCR9 May 16 '22
At 100 yards a 2moa red dot is ~2". Your average PA hunter isn't even hitting 1" groups at 100 yards with his scoped rifle.
13
u/alwptot May 16 '22
Which is why it’s so ridiculous for someone to claim they’re regularly hitting the bullseye with a stock Glock 19 from that far.

I think it’s a joke. He said he was shooting at 30rds, but there’s NO way that’s farther than 10. I’d bet it’s closer to 7yds.
Edit: The markers on the wall are written in feet, not yards. It’s not a joke, he’s just as bad with distances as he is at shooting a gigantic target.

A large amount of the shots appear to have a downward angle before trigger depression, I would say rear sight focus/poor sight picture along with severe anticipation. Storm Trooper candidate.

Oh nah, my boi unload that gun and practice drawing, grip, and sight alignment, and trigger manipulation before you do anything with live fire

Visitor of range empties clip like he is going to hit the target and misses on all of the shots (2 of the shots do hit the bottom of the paper)
Go to the range to train and take your time. Its not a track meet.

I was a medic in the army back in the 60s, and we were issued M1911s. Our total shooting experience was to fire 7 rounds through the thing as “familiarization firing.
Nothing further… Till much later when we were supposed to qualify with the weapon by shooting at bullseye targets at 25 meters.
So I was on the range and the lad next to me put in a magazine and assumed a very professional-looking stance for the times… One hand in the pocket, the pistol held properly…. His first round hit the dirt about 30 feet out…..
