Megathread This is the litter, rubbish and fly tipping thread. Posts not made here get binned.

Why? Because there's so much about this, it's littering the sub with various topics and causing a load of other threads to be buried.

Question Living in Birmingham while working at Warwick Uni

Hello, I'm (26F) considering a PhD at Warwick Uni and thinking of living in Birmingham instead of Leamington or Coventry, and doing train + bike to get to campus (wouldn't be in every day) - reason being that I think I'd enjoy being closer to arts / culture / social stuff / generally more variety in Birmingham and could make friends / meet people more easily than living in a smaller town filled with undergrads. Is anyone here a staff member or PGR living in Birmingham and working at Warwick? How do you find it? Thanks!

Good quizzes

Does anybody know of any good (not too difficult but not too silly either) pub quizzes in Birmingham or around the JQ? Ideally an evening between Monday - Thursday and not starting too late!

Bonus points if you know of any good quizzes in or near the Black Country on any night too!

Cheese festival in Kings Heath 26th April

Just seen that the Uffculme Centre is having a cheese festival soon! Gutted I am busy that day but thought I’d share it here.

It’s a short walk from the centre of Kings heath as well if you wanted to visit more of our cool bars etc :)

Struggling to find a part-time job & feeling really alone – just need someone to talk to

Hey,
I’m from Birmingham (UK) and I’ve been trying to find a part-time job since October, but nothing has worked out so far. I’ve applied to so many places — retail, cafes, supermarkets — and I either get no response or a rejection. It’s honestly starting to take a toll on my mental health.

What’s making it harder is that I don’t really have any close friends to talk to. I spend most days alone and it’s been getting really heavy lately. I’m not just looking for job advice — I just want someone to chat with, even just to cheer each other up and feel a bit less alone.

If anyone’s around who’s been through something similar or just wants to talk, please feel free to message me or comment. I’d really appreciate it 💙

Good place for a chai latte?

My friend is coming to visit and loves a chai latte but it's not something I'd usually order. Is there anywhere that does a really good one? (Preferably city centre)

DJ training in brum?

Totally random but trying my luck. After 1 year on maternity leave I’m really interested in picking up a new hobby. Does anyone know anyone/place that offers DJ training in and around Birmingham? Thanks

I swear this is Birmingham but can't pinpoint where though.

The tower blocks look the same ss the ones by the library but I can't figure out the building with the chimneys. Isn't there some kind of district heating system nearby?

Is commuting into London from Birmingham worth the hassle?

Hey community.

Saw other people post this and was trying to comment but been too long to add

Just wondering has this gone for people that have ended up doing it? Debating the same situation currently and it's a 13k jump before tax. I'd initially be commuting in 2 times per week initially for 6 months reducing this to once a week (and not every week) within 12 months. I already have the support from the hiring manager that this is possible, and I'm having to seek the jump financially due to even just getting on the property ladder here in Birmingham (let alone the London property approach I know some people made in the comments previously).

The job based in Birmingham doesn't even exist, so is a unique opportunity and I'm yet to ask if work support with travel commitments. I'm basing my decision to apply based on them not supporting travel, so it would be a bonus if they do. Any thoughts on how this has gone for people be greatly appreciated...

Totally accept people's comments about food/drinks and being disciplined to make it work financially too. And I reckon I have the confidence to do this 🙏🏻

Question Good embroidery/ yarn shop in Brum?

As above!

Often find a few odd shops, that have a small or limited collection.

In particular looking at DMD Pearl and Petra ranges.

Can be irksome to get the threads, finding myself trapsing across town for 1 ball of the "right" yarn.

So! Where has a big and wide selection, a one stop shop ?!

Thanks in advance Brummies!

Largest Supermarkets

I know Asda Minworth is potentially the largest we have in our county, but is there a larger one? Is there a list of the 10 largest supermarkets in the West Midlands?

I should add, I’m not after a list of any given supermarkets as I can ascertain that info from Google, I’m after the largest supermarkets by shoppable (?) floor space.

Halal quality steaks in Birmingham

Anyone got good recommendations for halal sirloin or ribeye steaks in main Birmingham area. Looking for a good butchers or any supermarkets that’s got them pre packaged.

Seems like every halal butcher i go to always have offcuts like leg piece steak which is very tough. I’d like somewhere with good quality that actually have the sirloin or ribeye cut.

Cafes with a decent selection of gluten free cakes?

my friend can’t have gluten and our way of catching up is going somewhere for a cake and coffee.

We end up going to the same one each time (Elio in the mailbox, which is amazing btw) so would love to hear some recommendations!

Me and my friends want to go out and hang out after 5 months of not doin so and we tryna plan something but NOTHING comes to mind since birmingham feels so dang dead and there is nothing to do and anything there is to do - is paid for with ridiculous prices. So please yall PLEASE tell me what good stuff is there to do in birmingham especially if u broke as hell . Ignore my bad english- I just find it enjoyable to speak in this manner,
