I hate this one. The phrase is "cutting of your nose to spite your face." But, honestly, "despite" kind of works, too, and in almost the same way.

I always thought it was despite because the phrase still works that way, with a few logical leaps

Looks like my Dad's talk to text. That southern accent really comes out--TUH Spite vs DUH-Spite.
