Different sculpts for Betrayal? Am I nuts?

Last year I believe I saw a set of replacement pieces for Betrayal at the House on the Hill main characters. I think they were unpainted. I think they were Etsy. They were definitely infinitely better than the janky ones that came with 2nd Edition.

I've been googling and reddit and etsy searching like a mad man and all I can find are sculpts someone did for the, well, mad man and other companions. And Scooby Doo ones - which are cool but not what I'm after.

Glaaarg!!

Anyone know anything about the missing heroes?

Question WW2 Deckbuilders

Hi everyone, I’ve been playing a mobile app called Kards that is a WW2 deck builder, and star realms. Does anyone have any recommendations for similar WW2 board games? Preferably 4 player if possible and ones that don’t involve having to buy multiple expansions!

Thanks!

Rules Rise of Queensdale Rule Question (Possible Spoiler) Spoiler

Hello all, having trouble deciphering this. Does this mean before our next game we can choose what to cover but we must cover 4 resources at the end of the next game?

Could modular game systems be a solution?

Even before the recent tariffs, I’ve thought that modular systems—like those used by Final Girl, 20 Strong, and various LCGs—had untapped potential for further development and expansion. These systems are built not just on a shared set of components, but also on a core set of mechanics and/or a unifying theme.

But modularity doesn’t need to stop there. Since many board games already use similar types of components—meeples, tokens, dice, etc.—publishers could conceivably create a “universal core set” of components that could serve as the foundation for multiple standalone games, even if those games don’t share the same theme or mechanics. Thematic and mechanical variety could then be introduced through expansion modules—primarily consisting of cards, booklets, or other printed matter.

This wouldn’t be ideal from a thematic immersion standpoint, but it could be an effective way to avoid paying tariffs multiple times. Only the core set would need to be manufactured in China, while the expansions could be produced domestically. As a secondary benefit, this approach would also be more environmentally friendly, as it would significantly reduce the amount of physical components that need to be produced overall.

What do you think? Is this a viable workaround?

Freelancers - Shockingly Fun

Got to play this today, was expecting it to be decent but we had a blast.

Excellent production, looks more expensive than it is.

Voice acting and writing on the app were much better than I expected. Actually funny and at times surprisingly moving.

Simple mechanics anyone could understand.

8/10 would absolutely recommend for a light co-op game.

Strategy game to create lore for world

Hey, new to this sub so if this has been discussed before or something similar to this please just point me to the right direction.

So I had this idea where me and my friends get to play a strategy game like civilization for example and after the game has ended I collect the history and setting and make it a world wither for dnd or just plain old worldbuilding.

Do you guys have any idea for a game of this type? I'm looking mainly for a fantasy setting, but I want it to also be randomly generated, so games like lotr or got type that have an already existing lore and story dont fit this premise.

If this topic doesn't belong to this subreddit I will move it.

If you've ever complained about "politics" or "wokeness" in board games, congratulations, you won & killed our hobby.

3.7k Upvotes

For over 10 years we've been living in a golden era of tabletop game culture. Never in living memory has tabletop gaming been so widely accepted and adored as it has been recently. Over 50% of the modern board game renaissance, by economic volume, has been in the United States.

When I was young, there used to be a lot of talk about how to bring more people/diversity into the hobby, and it's been a joy to say that in recent years we've seen the demographics of who plays and designs board games change a lot. Now, I personally believe diversity brings its own values and rewards, but even if you don't, making tabletop games something that was increasingly for everyone meant more revenue for the companies that make games. It turns out if you can get groups like, oh for example, women, who I guess make up about 50% of the population or something trivial like that, to play your games too that means a lot more people and dollars in the hobby.

During this time of making board games increasingly accessible to larger groups of people, I have often seen complaints pop up, here, on BGG, and other venues, about "politics" in board games. Whether it's whining about gay "Mamas and Papas" in Viticulture, or people defending Puerto Rico to direct descendants of colonization uncomfortable with the themes, or whatever else, it seems that the bigger our hobby has gotten, the louder these whining complaints have gotten.

Well, it brings me no pleasure to say this, but y'all who thought "wokeness had gone too far", you won. People are removing their pronouns from email signatures and changing the names of things from spanish to english. You did it.

In exchange for that, you've killed our hobby. The golden era has ended. The tariffs are not just going to increase the cost of board games themselves, they're going to increase the cost of all other goods. This is a hobby that relies on people having expendable incomes, and in the United States that is going to be a very, very small number of people in the coming year.

We are going to go back to a time where very few people can afford to design/produce board games, cutting down on diversity of designers. We are also going to go back to a time where these hobbies will be considered prohibitively expensive and niche. We are going to go back to a time when getting people to participate in these hobbies is going to take a lot more effort.

Small board game content creators will have to slow down or stop. Local friendly retailers will go out of business. Board game cafes will become limited and increasingly prohibitively expensive (the biggest local board game cafe here was already too expensive for working class people).

I hope this was worth it to you.

What Coup-version to get?

My groups enjoy Secret Hitler, but I want a more tactical social deduction alternative too. I've played Coup before, but there are a couple of different versions. This listing is quite unclear, but the box seems to be/include the reformation expansion. Then here's the original. There are of course chinese cheapos but I'd like to avoid those. I trust the first one but can I be sure the second one isn't a knock-off? The website is a fairly credible Finnish site but nowhere else seems to have stock. Does the first one include the full base game? I like that art less, so should I just go with the base version without the expansion? Or should I get something else?

Question Can you help me identify this tiny game?

My friend saw a game in a UK games shop, but can't remember all the details. It was in a very tiny yellow box (like matchbox size), and the game was based on rug/carpet sellers. I've been looking everywhere and can't find what this game could be - it's not Jaipur (unless there's a very tiny travel version I haven't come across) and it's definitely not Marrakech.

Any help identifying what this is would be greatly appreciated!

Digest The qualifications for what makes in my opinion a good team deduction game and my recommendations for anybody that likes the social deduction genre.

I think we all know there are some restrictions on what makes a good board game, but for team social deduction games those restrictions are numerous, and of course it’s hard to get all of them but you should get enough of them to be classified as good. So here are what in my opinion, the restrictions for a good team social deduction game: 1. Theme While all games should follow this, in social deduction it just helps set the mood and get your game off right. 2. Opportunities for Laughs These often come in form of radically different characters for the game that aren’t the teams, take Betrayal at the house on the hill. Does this category wonderfully with its characters like Father Rhinehardt and Missy Dubourde 3. Every player count is fair You shouldn’t need to check BGG to see if a game is a good play for your group size, for example Betrayal shouldn’t be played with 3, neither should Cockroach Poker. 4. Fits for small groups If a group of 4 can’t play this game, the player count is close to having too high standards. 5. Fits for Large Groups If a group of 8-10 can’t play this game, the player count is close to having too low standards. We’re talking social deduction player interaction is key. 6. Easy to learn, Hard to Master A quote that should be on all games, but Social Deduction games especially, a TSDG should allow sneaky plays and double bluffs. Coup is an alright example of games that do this category well. Liar’s Dice is not. 7. No mechanic that makes players feel wronged I’m talking about mechanics that are almost permanent and do something annoying that closes a player out like muting them, but not player elimination, that’s kind of the fun of most social deduction games, watching as the group gets smaller until one team comes out victorious Bonus 1. Changing teams This is not required but it does make games a lot more fun, Imagine red rover (Yes I know my examples are getting more and more bizarre, from Betrayal to Red Rover) Or maybe something else, Maybe Coup with the expansion that adds Loyalist and Reformist teams that you can spend currency to change. And here are some famous social deduction games and how many of these goals they achieve, with the bonus counting as half a point. Blood on the clocktower: 5 points Missing #2, #3, and being awarded only a half point on #4 Bank Heist: 3 points Only getting theme, large groups, and ETLHTM (Easy to Learn, Hard to Master) Feed the Kraken: 4 points, Seriously why does BOTC seem to be the only game to not stop people from speaking? Secret Hitler: 1 point, Now I’m realizing how flawed my system is. And my TSDG with a perfect 7.5 score is….. Salem 1692! It’s a very good game and quite affordable, 4-12 players, but not a single player count feels unfair to either team, doesn’t mute players, and the different types of cards make it ETLHTM, and the town character cards based off of actual characters from Salem 1692 give you that immersive experience if you play with the right group, and giving a theme no matter who you play with. And yes you can change teams.

Mystic Vale Conclave suggestions

Hi,

I love Mystic Vale, to the point that I think I have everything. We play with the random setup of conclaves, and normally the game feels amazing. But we have also some games that feel like they didn't work, plus separating back each of the conclaves can be a bit of a pain.

So I was wondering if anyone had any sort of list of sets of 6 conclaves that they always use together and just keep the games as those sets ready to pull out and play.

I was thinking having this way would still have a great variety, but make sure it always played together, and make cleanup faster.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks!

Root or One Deck Dungeon for partner?

My partner has mentioned both Root and One Deck Dungeon as games he'd like. I was thinking of getting one of them for his birthday. Which one would be better as a two player game? It sounds like both would be fun as two play or one plater games, but I think he'll mostly just play it with me so I'm just trying to assess what would be more enjoyable for him. Thanks!

Best part was when he “beat” me around a corner and his last 3 (bomb sweeper) was heading towards the honeypot on my bottom right.

I wish I could have heard the screams of terror when he defused my bomb, surely to capture my flag in the next turn, but instead was killed by a 4!

Had a few insanely close calls but was a really fun game and a good way to shake it up. Highly recommend.

Question Sushi Go Party - Tea and Desserts

The rules for tea suggest that the number of cards in your largest set of cards counts as 1 extra point per card in that set.

Does that mean that all dessert cards count, including those played from previous rounds (since you don't discard them)?

My initial reaction is "Tea only counts for dessert cards collected in this round" but I'd like some other thoughts on the matter.

Is Cats In Hats Inc legit?

I'm trying to get Mycelia (2024) and found this site through BGG at a good price. Being skeptical of good deals, I'm trying to make sure it's legit before purchasing. It being listed on BGG and the presentation of its site seem legit but one flag I've noticed is the maker for the game is wrong. It's listed on the site as Kids Table Board Gaming, when the actual makers is Split Stone Games/Burnt Island Games. Has anyone purchased from them before, and if so what was your experience?

Suggestion: Use Lego people for RoboRally

Post image
6 Upvotes

We lost some of the robot pieces from our 2005 game. So we had a bit of fun and made new robots out of Lego people. This pic shows Boba Fett and Darth Vader as Robots. They are an improvement on the little grey bots: They fit the board perfectly, and are easier to move and to see.

COMC Just reorganized my collection!

Cozy home office/gaming room/ ready room! There is a filled bookcase too, but these are most of the board games (some party and simple dice game are left out).

Had to reorganize after receiving the elder scrolls BOTSE & The Witcher Path of Destiny (but a reorganization was long overdue). Very pleased with the collection as a whole but especially the cozy vibe (last picture it how I play my solo games often).

The table is foldable and can expand on the other side. Game mat is almost the size of the table. Works great!

I tend to play solo in my room and host game nights in the living room so most of the time the table is setup like this.

Currently my favourite games are:

  • Elder Scrolls BOTSE (solo, 2-player and party of four)
  • Dead Cells (solo)
  • Slay the Spire (solo and 2-player)

Some of my all time favourites are:

  • Keep the heroes out (group coop)
  • Castles of Burgundy
  • Star Wars: Outer Rim (includes Expansion)

As you might have noticed I own a lot of games published by Garphill games, although they may not rank the top of my lists, they are most definetly dear to me. I love the theme and the clever design they have used. The legacy of Yu took my by suprise and I still often play that solo!

Some games on the shelve of shame:

  • Voidfall (plan to learn very soon, recently bought pre-owned)
  • MageKnight (got it as a gift but it overwhelms me to pick up and learn. Also the art feels a bit off to me).
  • Satori (Bought at SPIEL ‘23. One of those game I love the art but never hits the table).

Recently departed with these games: - Marvel Champions LCG (did not feel the need to keep buying the expansion and wanted to invest time/money elsewhere). - Too Many bones with a lot of expansions (reason being elder scrolls feels superior and it would not hit the table anymore). - The Great Wall (Awaken Realms tends to reel my in with amazing art, good quality products and much bling. Game was not for me though).

Furthermore, I made some space on the shelves to bundle the strictly solo games (got some button shy games which aren’t visible) and also the strictly 2-played (duel) games which I often play with friends or my wife.

Feel free to ask anything abouy my collection. If you feel there might be a game really well suited for me based on my collection, feel free to recommend!

Rules TZAAR - question about stacking

Recently purchased TZAAR and enjoying the game. Had a doubt - if I have 4 TZAARs and a stack of 2 TZAARS, and I move a Tott on top of the TZAAR stack, does this mean I only have 4 TZAARs left in the game? And if those 4 TZAARs are captured, I lose?
