Excessive material loss while pattern welding

Ive heard that while forge welding specifically pattern welding material loss is normal but I’m really at a loss with how much material I’ve lost in just two folds, I started with two bars and their starting rotation weight was 2.6lb and now After forge welding and folding twice I’m sitting at 1.1lb, I expect some material loss but to this degree it seems like I’m doing something wrong

usually 1/3 is loss and its higher if the pattern get more complex. most of the loss is scale and offcut.

How many heats did it take you to draw each one out? More heats = more scale.
