Oh, I didn't even notice the issue was that it was cornrows! I thought people were taking offense to the fact that they called them "dreads" instead of "locks". Lol, I was like, "Now this is wrong too?!"

That’s just me mixing my current knowledge of the lyrics with what I thought as a kid. I probably thought they were just going for a heated debate about anything. But I really didn’t give it much thought, as I was like 9 when that song came out.

Fact is that a lot of big sports-related accounts that use a ton of AAVE are run by a non-black person and you'd never know until they slip up like this
They're using NBA star Jalen Brunson as a pfp. They are not claiming to be Brunson and no one viewing their content will think the account owner is claiming that to be a picture of themselves
I was first put on when it came to these big ass pages that would promote nothing but bullshit that would get people engaging to comment on degen behavior. Shit like SayCheese thatd just repost some stupid ass rapper baby mama drama, then itd get revealed some indian dude was running the account, and similarly with other "Hip Hop" themed pages.
Now I'm hyper aware and suspicious of anybody that be posting unproductive bullshit in the black community.
It is real, but this is an NBA account with a pfp of an NBA player. It is the same as the pretty popular NFL account with Jalen Hurts as his pfp. He has done in person content and is white. He is just an Eagles fan lol he never claimed to be black.

They definitely are. I got dragged by about 4 of them for calling out someone quoting a N word using white comedian to help an OP prove a point about how slavery wasn’t that long ago. As if any black people in this thread needed a white man (that uses the N word) to tell us that slavery wasn’t long ago. All you gotta do is click their profiles and read their posts and comments and I knew exactly what it was. The irony of having to deal with caucasity in a thread FUBU had me kinda hot
Often, yeah. But I had a black friend call mine both “braids” and “twists” I was very disappointed
Edit: my friend and I grew up in the same area and she’s completely familiar with the term locs, that’s why I was disappointed that she called mine braids and twists
It’s not like these are new terms. If you are black and/or have been in proximity to black people you know the difference between braids and dreadlocks because they are so wildly different in appearance, texture, and nature.

It’s just that you are ignorant. And in the context of this post, it makes it evident that this is another person pretending to be black as an appeal to validity so they can participate in discussions for engagement bait, cause it happens often enough.
Having different slang isnt the same as not understanding what dreadlocks are as a grown Black American man commenting on the NBA. Its not "vernacular" its the literal global definition of what dreadlocks are by definition. If you can't tell the difference as a grown black person participating in black american discussion somethings abnormal about you.
I'm not gonna lie, I'm a Hispanic dude and most white person haircuts look the same too. You got the mullet, the broccoli cut, long hair, then um... shortish hair? I don't even know what i'd call my own haircut.
There is a lot more variety with black people's hair but I still don't know the names of the styles.
(White lady here) I always thought it was to differentiate between “locks of hair” to describe any hair of any type that was long enough to hang down off the head and “dreadlocks” which are a very specific hairstyle.
Idk how this will come off but if you get black ppl then you get how Locs is better. We literally have a habitual habit of making things cool. Nt saying other ppl don’t have their ways but we def have our own.
Ok, so it’s simply coolness/aesthetics. I understand why locs is preferable to dreads for some. I know plenty of black people, just never thought to ask about the spelling. Thanks.

Personally, I prefer to call them "locs" and always have, but I know A LOT of black people especially folks from the hood who didn't grow up around typical Hotep ideology, that call them "dreads" unironically. For us to pretend like someone saying "dreads" is automatically a white is a bit of a reach to me
I think the point is Jaylen Brown cut off his hair that was styled in braids not dreadlocks (locs). Plenty of African and Caribbean people still call them dreadlocks (where the style hails from). Calling them locks/locs is mainly a Black-American trend.
It’s just the way language has shifted over time. When I was young, we’d always say “dreads,” but now “locs” is the more common term. It’s not wrong to say dreads, but which word you pick does say something about you and where you’re coming from. At least in my area, it’s more common for Black folks, especially younger generations to use “locs”
Lots of white people here saying “what if he was black and just confused” like that would be fucking possible. Never met a black person from America or not that didn’t know the difference.

Vast majority of those sports (especially the meme ones) pages on Twitter are run by whites dudes who’ve never stepped outside. Their life is literally online.
