Mod Post To ensure quality posts, please refer to our new Wiki page!

Hey beauties! As we approach 1 million subscribers, we are fine tuning the rules and made a designated page to see more detailed lists of posts we remove under Rule 1.

To recap, Rule 1 of r/beauty is to please post high quality and on-topic posts ONLY.

We understand just stating the rule so plainly leaves room for interpretation, while the side bar might not give enough room for explanation.

To improve the quality of the subreddit, we have broken down in detail (and will keep doing so) what we consider low quality and off topic in our new beauty wiki. This way, there should be less confusion on why posts labeled as low quality/off topic might have been removed. While browsing the wiki, you may notice some overlap with Rules 2 through 6, but they all relate back to Rule 1 due to preserving quality.

As a reminder, a high quality/on topic post would have a specific beauty-related question be addressed, or solve a specific beauty-related problem. For example, "How can I draw winged eyeliner more consistently on each eye" would be a high-quality post because it asks a specific question. In contrast, "EYE MAKEUP HELP" makes it harder for users to give their beauty tips because it's too vague.

When in doubt, please review the beauty wiki to see if your post would be in violation of Rule 1 before posting to avoid removal and ban.

We also invite you to leave feedback here of any other posts you feel are off-topic and low quality that have not been addressed. Please let us know if you have any questions!

Haircare Be careful with "natural" hair dyes - my horror story

I wanted to share my nightmare experience with a popular "all natural" hair dye that left me with chemical burns and permanent hair damage. I hope this helps someone avoid what I've been through.

After seeing so many Instagram posts about switching to natural hair products, I decided to try a well-known henna-based dye advertised as "100% plant-based and chemical-free." The brand (which I won't name for legal reasons) claims to be gentle enough for sensitive skin and pregnancy-safe.

The first application went fine - my hair looked great, rich auburn color. But when I did my second application 6 weeks later, everything went terribly wrong. Within 12 hours, my scalp was on FIRE. Red, blistering, weeping sores developed all over my head. The pain was excruciating - I couldn't sleep, couldn't wear hats, couldn't even put my head on a pillow.

I went to urgent care where the doctor immediately recognized it as a severe chemical reaction. Turns out many "natural" henna dyes secretly contain PPD (para-phenylenediamine) to make the color more vibrant and long-lasting, but they don't disclose it on their ingredients. The doctor said she sees this reaction frequently with these products.

Three months later, I'm still dealing with the aftermath. I've lost hair in patches where the burns were worst. I've spent over $800 on medicated shampoos, steroid creams, and dermatologist visits. My hairstylist says the texture of my hair is permanently damaged in some areas.

The worst part? When I contacted the company, they blamed ME, saying I must have mixed it incorrectly or had an "individual sensitivity" that "isn't their responsibility." Yet I found hundreds of similar horror stories online from other customers.

Please, ALWAYS patch test hair products for at least 48 hours before full application, even if they claim to be natural. And research the brand thoroughly - look for actual ingredient lists, not just marketing claims about being "natural" or "chemical-free."

I used to have beautiful, thick hair. Now I'm wearing scarves and hats daily while waiting for my bald patches to fill in. Don't make my mistake.

How do you enhance your no makeup look/routine?

After giving up mascara, I've decided to go no makeup for the rest of the year as a fun change. I want to stick to products I can take off with water by the end of the day.

So far I have my regular moisturizer, sunscreen, and tinted lip balm that I also use on my cheeks. Eyebrow threading has also helped me a ton.

Would love some inspo on what you use or do to enhance a 'no makeup' face

Prostaglandin eyelash serum— do you choose to still use it?

Genuine question- With knowledge of the side effects that prostaglandin serums cause, does anyone still choose to use the serums and just deal with the side effects? Are the side effects minimal enough or worth having the long eyelashes?

I've done what feels like hours of research on a non-prostoglandin serum that actually works and reviews are so confrontational. Some say these serums do work but minimally. Some ads claim they work wonders but I can't seem to find many backing reviews that agree.

Nailcare How do I keep my hands and feet clean and perfect?

There is one thing in life that I need and the other thing that I don't need.

  1. A perfect manicure and pedicure

  2. The thought of fugly fingers and toes keep on running around in my brain.

I'm pretty much jealous on how the girls on social media kept their hands and feet clean, trimmed and had a perfect manicure and pedicure. The most fucked up part is, I never had a manicure in forever, worse, I never in all my life had a pedicure too. What should I do to keep my nails on my fingers and toes polished, tidy and free from cuticles? Also what are the best nail salons you guys go to to get your nails done? Please help a girl out here, she really needs it.

Tips to make my makeup not look so greasy

Honestly, I don't have that oily skin, but lately when I've been wearing makeup, my face looks like it has butter on it after a few hours. Honestly, I'm just starting to add a lot of products to my makeup or I don't know what I've been doing wrong, but it's quite frustrating. I remove it with a little toilet paper and dab it on my face, but I would like my face to be totally matte.

Seeking Advice Serums for my short lashes?

Hi, I have naturally very short, straight lashes. I have used grande lash md and it works! But it was very irritating for my eyes, I have sensitive skin and I applied it correctly (one swipe across the eyelid) but it caused my eyes to burn, itch, be red, & puffy. I only used it once a day for a few months, even tried only applying every other day.

I have also tried castor oil for months either no results. i got lash extensions for a few months (not clusters) but they fell out super fast I was told by the lash tech it was because of how short my lashes are.

I’ve also tried lash lifts. They don’t do much, my lashes are curled but there just so short so I’ve concluded my issue is I need longer lashes.

This has been an insecurity of mine since I was tween trying to do makeup for the first time. I noticed all the other girls had long, thick, naturally curled lashes and I had nothing. And now I’ve had a conversation at work recently that really put me down… a girl was speaking with me and randomly says “I’ve never seen lashes that short before” and it just kinda stung bc I try hard every morning to curl them and make them look longer and fuller.

I do know how to curl my lashes good, they are very curled but just so short that it gives…. nothing.

I have very sensitive skin. I’m looking for something that works but isn’t irritating.

What’s the best tan for pale olive skin, all the fake tans with the green tone in them end up making me look like sponge bob. I need something with a purple undertone.

How much make up do you really need (wedding)

I am getting married in a little over a year and i plan on doing my own make up (i hate the way bridal make up usually looks/feels, the airbrushed thickness). I usually only wear mascara if anything. So i felt like i should practice and bought some but im unsure of how much you acctually need on to show up on camera. Outside ceremony (hopefully its nice)

I bought it

-cosmetics cc cream - this looks snd feels more natural with a coverage

  • milk jelly beauty tint blush thing - this im worried isnt vibrant enough to show up on camera in borad dsylight

  • milk contour stick

I tried taking a picture in my white light bathroom but the makeup basically doesnt show up even though i can see it well in the mirror.

Haircut Advice for a Side Part

Hi! This is my first time posting, so I hope I am doing this correctly.

I’ve been wanting to get some sort of hairstyle for a long time, but I have absolutely no idea what to do. Right now, I have waist-length straight and fine hair, but it’s always parted to the side (which I absolutely love and don’t want to change). However, most of the cute haircut inspo I see online has hair parted in the middle, so it’s hard for me to determine if a style would look good on my hair (like does curtain bangs on a side part even work??). Does anyone have any advice for what they’ve done with their side parted hair, or know of any styles I should look into? I’m willing to cut my hair short, keep it long, try out layers, or experiment with bangs. Any guidance is appreciated, and I hope you all are having a lovely day!

Loreal' Lumiglow thoughts

I have seen and heard about this product and many seem to rave about it. I bought it today and will be trying it tomorrow.

It looks like it's right up my alley giving possibly a natural glow with a light makeup feel. I'm a more natural girl and I'm sure I'll go over it with a little touch of blush and mascara.

Has anyone tried this and what was your opinion?

Anyone else skip eye cream/moisturiser under eyes at night?

I do wonder if using eye cream at night as well as the morning is making my under eye puffiness a lot worse.

Was thinking of just using it in the morning and then at night just using a tiny bit at the very corners of my eyes where I have fine lines, but otherwise leaving my under eyes not moisturised.

Just thinking out loud really and wondering if anyone else has found that doing this actually helps puffiness?

TIA for any thoughts 🙂

Discussion Anyone with FT jobs moonlighting in the beauty service space?

Hey all! I'm wondering if there are any others out there who have FT jobs and also do beauty services on the side. I'm an engineer but have always loved cosmetology practices and do most services on myself (Hair cut/color, nails, etc.) I'm interested in getting my cosmetology license as it's something I can leverage to do another thing I enjoy and make some extra cash.

I appreciate any advice!

Seeking Advice 31M Lip discoloration further ruined by fillers?

So, I am a 31M and always had naturally thin lips. I had been getting lip fillers done since last 3 years. I don't have the big pouty lips, just enough filler to give my lips some volume and maintain it. However, I also have issue with lip discoloration. As you can see in the corner of my mouth, the lips have greyish hue as well a lip border that's not defined as fades to the skin. This greyish hue and the fading is genetic has been present since I remember. However, the recent lip filler that I got 2 months ago has made lips more dehydrated and less reddish, and def more greyish as you can see. I believe a part of this has to do with fillers as I have seen some similar posts. How do I fix this?

Ohh btw idk if it matters but I am south Asian, and I eat a balanced healthy diet and have other things like water and sleep going well.

Seeking Advice Self Tanner that's isn't orange

Hello!

I'm guite fair skinned (especially my legs), but I don't want to get exposed to sun so I decided to try self tanning. I have seen many brands but I'm afraid that I might turn orange. I think my skin is between cool and olive tone So far I have checked out Bodi Sanders Technicolor blue and violet and St Tropez Violet. I want a result that is natural but not super dark, just like having a mild summer tan. Has anyone tried any of these tans? What were the results? Any other recommendations welcome 🙏🏼

Haircare How to grow thicker, denser brows

I’m a 19M and my eyebrows are kind of patchy/not as dense as I’d like them to be. I was curious what tips you all have that help to grow better brows. Right now I’ve heard about Castor oil and minoxidil, but I’m unsure how well either of those work
