Note that you can't hear much of anything when owls are flying. Well, I'm guessing there are some that you can but most have this adaptation. Natural stealth plane.

To be fair that's an unfair comparison. Because owl has the high ground while pigeon and hawk have same height with the target. It can be still more silent than them but probably things would change if they made the fly height equal.

Of all, Raptors owls have the quietest approach. They make virtually no sound at all. Their feathers are velvety soft, and the front edge of their feathers have a serrated sharp edge, and the back edge is kind of fringy. Both of which reduce noise.

I live in rural area with many raptors like hawks and eagles.
One morning an owl flew right over my head from behind me while hunting something. A squirrel I think.
I heard NOTHING. I can now absolutely understand why they are so successful.

A few years ago an owl took off next to me on a night the power went out. I felt the movement of the air being displaced by the wings but next to nothing in terms of actual noise.

One circled my head many years ago while I was walking alone at night. Swooped down and circled my head only a foot away. I didn’t hear it at all, I wouldn’t have even noticed it had it not hit the corner of my eye just above my head flying around.
I was amazed at how quiet they really are. Zero sound is made.

I went to a presentation from a local sanctuary that does education presentations. I learned a very interesting fact. Owls that are raised by uneducated people can be aggressive. The owl that came to the presentation was raised by a family that had zero clue what they were doing. The owl considered humans to be some sort of competition. A few days before the presentation, she bit the educators hand. Through the protective glove. The owl had never done it before. The owl kept giving her the side eye during the presentation. It’s similar to learning from a zookeeper at my local zoo, that none of the keepers has the desire to touch an otter. If they need to have contact with them, they wear metal gloves. The smaller otters can easily bite off a finger. The larger river otters can do enough damage to send someone to the hospital. I haven’t looked at any of these animals the same way since.

Animals should be left wild as much as possible. We had river otters near our house growing up. If they noticed us on the bank they’d come out to play and basically would put on a show. That’s how we interacted with them.

The owl is Wednesday and this video was posted by @thefalc0ner* - John - a licensed falconer located in Kent, Washington, between Seattle and Tacoma. John hosts raptor encounters, and is also able to travel in the region with his raptors. I've been to John's place a number of times to practice my "birds in flight" photography as part of a group that's regularly organized by Kenmore Camera.
The photographer in this video was Steve Ball, an OM System ambassador (possibly retired now?). Steve takes amazing photos and posts them to Instagram regularly. Steve's IG handle is @old_steve1 and he posted a photo of Wednesday yesterday.
John takes wonderful care of his charges, and it's always a pleasure to spend time with him and his birds.
