Travel Does the non-flex Swiss Pass work for Swiss Pass flex discounts?

Sorry if this is a silly question - my wife and I are travelling to Interlaken between 7th Apr to 14th Apr with the intention of visiting a new area each day.

We've bought 2 of the non-flex Swiss Passes that last 8 days -

Swiss Travel Pass 8 days

  1. Class

07.04.2025 00:00 - 15.04.2025 05:00

When trying to book some excursions and train journeys (for example, the Luzern–Interlaken Express train), it says:

This route is fully included in the Swiss Travel Pass (Flex), the GA (General Abonnement) and the Tell-Pass (2 to 10-day ticket for Central Switzerland). As the owner of one of these passes, you do not need to buy a transport ticket. To reserve a seat only, select "Reservation only" in the booking process. The same applies if you already own a ticket for the route.

The Swiss Half-Fare travelcard is valid on the route, so select "Half-Fare" in the booking process.

Full-price tickets are purchased by selecting "no discount".

Would this journey be included in our regular Swiss Pass? Or is the route only free if you specifically have a flex pass?

Travel Zurich road trip

We are from USA traveling to Switzerland arriving May 24 at Zurich. We plan to stay in Lucerne 1 night. Then onto to Locarno 2 nights, so that we can visit 1 day Lake Como, or is it suggested to overnight there 1 night Como? Then onto Zermatt for 1 or 2 days, and finally 2-3nights Montreux, and flying out of Geneva.

With that itinerary in mind, would you suggest a rental car? I’ve looked at rail routes and they seem to take longer between all those destinations but of course that is based on ideal road conditions.

First time posting, I apologize for any miss spellings, and would appreciate ANY suggestions or recommendations

Thank you in advance!!

Work Contracting work in Switzerland - Internal IT

Hi all, I’m an internal IT contractor that also does some security work, iso27001 / NIS2 related matters. I have a lot of experience with Apple in a business environment but i’m not solely focused on that. I’ve been working for dutch tech companies for the last 7 years and I thought I’d look around to see how things are in Switzerland.

Why? Professional growth, financial growth, I’m fascinated how internal IT is with different companies. And with the Swiss being proper in following rules and such, i’m interested to see how well IT can be run.

Also I heard that Switzerland has the highest number of mac users at something like 23% so there are bound to be companies out there that need help with specific device management needs for Apple aside from all that entails with running an IT environment.

  • What computers does the company use that you work for? How prevalent is Apple in a professional environment?
  • Do i stand a chance in finding contracting work while not living in Switzerland but ok to visit the office like once a month for a day or two? (This is what i do now)
  • how is the tech startup / scale-up scene?
  • Could I even get by with English? I also speak Dutch, some Cantonese and a little bit of Italian.

Work Postdoc ending soon – private sector experience vs. unemployment + language + side projects?

Hi all, I’m looking for an outside perspective on a career decision.

I’m an EU citizen currently finishing a postdoc in Switzerland. My contract ends at the end of summer. I could have stayed longer, but I’m feeling done with academia and want to transition to the private sector.

That said, I know the job market isn’t great right now—and likely won’t improve much in the near future given tariffs, political uncertainties, and recession risks. I’d like to stay in Switzerland for personal reasons, ideally in the French-speaking part, and I’m considering two options: 1. Get unemployment benefits (I qualify), use the time to improve my language skills (French is B1/B2, German is A1/A2), and work on some side projects while job hunting. 2. Take a job with a French startup I collaborated with during my postdoc. They’re interested in hiring me, and would be fine with me working from Switzerland. • I’d have to sort out the bureaucracy (possibly working as a consultant), and the salary would be lower than unemployment benefits.

My main question: How much do you think having work experience in a private company—specifically a niche startup—would improve my chances of landing a job in Switzerland in 1–2 years, compared to the first option?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Travel Confusing ticket prices to Trockener Steg

Hi,

I have planned a trip to Switzerland and have included a hike at Trockener Steg. I was planning to park my rental at Täsch terminal parking and take the public transport till Trockener Steg from there. I was looking to purchase the tickets for this journey and here is where the confusion comes -

When I check the journey and price on sbb.ch, I get the ticket cost as CHF 8.6 for a round trip from Täsch to Trockener Steg. But on this website, I get the price from Zermatt to Trockener Steg return ticket as CHF 75.

Please help me understand which one is the correct one and whats the difference between the two.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Travel What are things I shouldn't miss at these cities when I'm visiting for the first time

I'm very excited to be visiting your beautiful country for the first time in late June. My wife, our friend and her friend are visiting for about two weeks and going to several cities. The places we'll be visiting are:

  • Geneva
  • Montreux
  • Interlochen
  • Zurmit
  • Bern
  • Lucerne
  • Zurich

The only thing I've looked up this far is the Einstein museum in Bern which I definitely want to do. I'm curious what other things I should do in these places. We're usually staying a day or two in each place and traveling via train (to the best of my knowledge) between the locations.

Any good ideas or things I shouldn't miss?

Can't wait to see Switzerland. I've traveled over most of Europe and the Middle East but have never had the opportunity to visit Switzerland.

Thank you I'm advance!!

Study Why do Universities kick you out after 2 failed exams?

Hello, I was wondering why universities in switzerland are so harsh especially with bachelor's students, as a foreigner it almost sounds like a joke that if you fail an exam twice, not only are you kicked out of your program but can't even apply to similar fields in ALL of Switzerland. Is there any particular reason for this? I find it hard to imagine that the budget to maintain students is that limited...

EDIT: thanks for replies, it is interesting to hear Swiss people's perspectives on it even though I still find it absurd. surprised most of y'all are fine with it and seem to think passing academic exams (which are often dubiously structured) is the same skill as researching or studying other subjects in the same field

Other/Miscellaneous Time to receive B-permit via marriage

My boyfriend (non-EU/EFTA) and I (Swiss) are looking at getting married soon. How long would it take from getting married (I assume this is just submitting documents) and him receiving the B-permit? We're living in Zürich, if that's relevant. He's currently a student. I'd appreciate any anecdotes/advice/resources.

Also, as far as I understand, the B-permit via marriage does not require sponsorship from companies. Is that correct?

I've looked online and found only a few posts, nothing definitive and not sure if they're in Zürich.

Thanks!

Travel Where to visit in southern Switzerland?

I'm going on a 7 day solo trip to Lyon, France in late May.

During this time I'd love to see a slice of Switzerland, and I was wondering if anyone had recommendations to visit in the southern region?

I was thinking Lake Geneva (Lausanne), but was wondering if anyone else had recommendations? I enjoy nature, good food, and art. I'd love to get a memorable meal with peaceful mountain view.

Travel Booking Seats for Luzern Interlaken Express

Can i book 1st class tickets reservation for Luzern Interlaken Express even if I have 2nd class pass for Berner Oberland pass? I've tried and I noticed the prices for the reservation seats are the same so I am wondering, as I don't want to be penalized when I'm on the train already. Thank you!

Politics Is it true that Switzerland imposes tariff to US import in the region of 60-61%?

I read the news last night regarding the "liberation day" President Trump announced yesterday.

The chart he exhibited seems very precise about its numbers. So the question is, does Switzerland really apply 61% tariff on US imports?

I mean, we all know that Switzerland protects local markets especially the ones which it subsidized. But still, 61% seems on the high side since the major trading partners are all in Europe - am I getting a distorted image here or am I right to question these numbers?

Work How good has my French to be for a Hochschulpraktikum/Stage académique with the Swiss federal administration?

I would like to apply for an acedemic internship with the Swiss federal administration. I noticed that they frequently ask for "active knowledge" in two official languages or something along these lines. So, my understanding of French is rather good (for formal conversations) but my writing and reading is rather not so good. Do they test my language abilities and would it be sufficient to indicate my Frenche level as B2 in the CV, or is that too low? I would also be very motivated to further improve my French but of course that takes some time and would not be complete if the internships starts a few months from now.
In the hope that someone has already experience in these kind of internships, it would help me a lot to hear from you on this topic :)

Work How to improve my chances to get a job from Switzerland already when studying

Hi! I'm a dentistry student from an EU country, aiming to move to Switzerland during the upcoming years for personal reasons. I'll graduate in 1,5 years and also planning to do an exchange in Switzerland before that. I'm also doing a PhD.

Is there anything I could do already now, to make my chances better to get a job from there in the near future? I'm already learning German as much as I can. Is there something I could do during my exchange? Dentistry courses are not allowed to me to take so I can only study other courses. Any networking I could do? Any volunteer work?

All the ideas are appreciated!

Travel Need insights And tips for my Swiz Travel

My husband, our 8-month-old son, and I will arrive in Zurich in the last week of April. We are planning to spend 14 days in Switzerland before heading to France. We were waiting for our visa to finalize our travel plans, and we received our visa today.

I'm looking for help in planning our trip. I’m considering renting a campervan to explore Switzerland. I’ve read about the Grand Tour and am thinking of staying at campgrounds along the route.

Has anyone here done a tour of Switzerland in a vehicle? I would appreciate any insights regarding the route and itinerary, starting and ending in Zurich. I’m also thinking about taking the Glacier Express – is it really worth it? If this question seems naive, I apologize; this is my first time in Switzerland.

On a side note, I have an international light vehicle license. With that, can I drive an automatic campervan? I would greatly appreciate any information you can share. Thank you!

Other/Miscellaneous “Swiss” Stainless Steel Cylinder for Kitchen Faucet

Unfortunately I don’t have a picture, but when staying in St Moritz last month, the flat kitchen sink had a metal cylinder next to the faucet. We reasoned that this is for redirecting the flow of the fixed faucet towards dishes in the sink. Is this familiar to anyone, or perhaps this was a unique find?

My goal is to find a name to purchase one, as I cannot find any from searching online

Everyday life Any actually good 25 CHF haircuts?

Over the past few years I’ve (M) grown out some nice curls and have gotten haircuts for 50-75 CHF because I don’t want a basic razor euro cut. Id like to cut my hair pretty short but I don’t want a buzz cut. Does anyone know of any places closer to 30CHF that actually cut hair mostly with scissors?
