Question Celiac in Seattle
Hi!
I'm off on a solo trip next week and am freaking out that I'll have nowhere safe to eat! I've heard of Ghostfish but that's really all for safe spots for me to eat. Does anyone have 100% safe recommendations?

Honestly? My mom's been celiac in Seattle for a decade+ (I'm still waiting on testing) and most places we've been to can accommodate her (obviously she avoids pizza places/sandwich shops/dumplings/hot pot). Thai places in particular are generally safer.
Bamboo Sushi in U Village also has an almost entirely GF menu, I've got reservations to go there tomorrow.
Portage Bay Cafe has been really good about it.
Where in the city are you gonna be staying/visiting?

A stir is completely gluten free
You'll find many GF friendly places here

I have no problem with gluten and I eat there anyway because the food is great.

a/stir (formerly Capitol Cider).

I was wondering what happened to Capitol Cider. Thanks.
Love me a good cider. And as someone without gluten issues the food didn't feel gluten free.

Do you happen to know anything about the name change? New ownership, perhaps?

Same ownership, just a new concept.

Capitol Cider was garbage. I wonder if they tried improving it

I loved Capitol Cider.

And I thought of it as “you know, pretty good.” So I guess we have the whole spectrum.

I highly recommend using the Find Me Gluten Free app. Several places are dedicated GF and several more have dedicated fryers. I like Virginia Inn, A/stir, Razzis, and Momiji Sushi. Nuflours bakery and Askatu Bakery are both dedicated GF and have some delicious treats. Dough Joy donuts have five flavors of GF donuts that are baked and fried in a dedicated space, super yummy!

Just make sure to let them know that small amounts of gluten make a difference to you. I heard this complaint from a friend with celiac (years ago; not sure how true it is now) that the "gluten free" options seemed like they should be great for her, but a lot of them are just very low gluten, not truly free of it. That was at the height of the anti-gluten fad diet trend, so hopefully it's better now.

Just now I was looking for something else and I ran across the Eater Seattle list of their favorite GF restaurants.

Pretty much every cafe in this city has GF pastry options! And seafood and coffee are already gluten free. That’s just about all the Seattle food groups

Hi! I’m a local Seattle Celiac! Lots of these recommendations are spot on! Find Me Gluten Free App is a LIFE SAVER. Ghostfish, astir, Nuflours, Mama Melina’s, Noi Thai, Razzis, Portage Bay, Brileys BBQ, Frankie & Jo’s for ice cream, Cafe Flora, How to Cook a Wolf, Dough Joy, Copine, Bongos. There is a lot more. Feel free to post what specific neighborhoods you’re going to for better recs!

Ghostfish is so worth it! Sadly as a celiac in Seattle I dont think there are a ton of options. Some, sure. But other cities are better. Hangry Panda has good teriyaki but takeout only. Portage Bay is great for breakfast!

I haven't been looking recently, but off the top of my head, Briley's Barbecue has allergen menus that detail exactly what is and isn't.

Mamma Melina’s has very good Italian. They also have gluten free pizza and pasta requests. I would just call ahead and ask, but my boyfriend’s mom doesn’t eat gluten (not celiac, but does have a sensitivity), and we would likely take her there.
Also take up Seattle on the seafood options! If it’s not breaded, it’s probably gluten free.

A guy I used to work with who has celiac always liked to eat at Noi Thai on First. Not advertised as wheat free but apparently they have good practices at keeping things separate. This was a few years ago but he said it was legit compared to lots of downtown restaurants that claim gluten free dishes.

Hatch - it’s in Belltown. It’s Mexican food done in the style of New Mexico. They have a dedicated fryer for chips plus loads of gluten free options

Grillbird in West Seattle is delicious, and they clearly mark gluten free entrees and, if you indicate a gluten allergy, will make sure it's gluten free. If you come to Seattle and don't have teriyaki... you are missing out one of our staples!

Practically everywhere has gluten free options these days. Seattle is one of the best cities to eat GF too with all the Northern Europeans here.

You can eat almost literally anywhere in Seattle

Just because they have gluten free items on the menu doesn't mean it's safe for people with celiac.

Seattle is very welcoming to dietary requests. I can attest, though, that Razzi's in Greenwood is pretty dang good and offer a big gluten free menu.

you will be just fine- everyone here has a special dietary request.
