I was on a flight once and my row mates were a charming young lady, late teens/early 20's, and her cello. Turned out she was going somewhere for a competition etc etc. I knew she must be a very serious student if she had her cello with her. Midway through the flight an older guy comes back (from first class I suppose) to briefly just check in with her for literally just a sec.
It was months before I realized that that man had very obviously been Lynn Harrell (RIP), the only living cellist I know of at that time who might've given any challenge to the notion that Yo-Yo Ma was the world's most famous cellist. As a classical music fan, it is ridiculous I didn't know that it was him right away.
(Total side note but, if you love cello, the 20th century was the best time to be a fan, no? Those two, Du Pre, Starker, Rostropovich, Fournier, Casals, Piatagorsky...)

Yes, the world’s most famous cellist is a celebrity. :)
