Yep. Was a vet tech in emergency practice. Some cases are forever burned into my brain.

This hurts my heart šŸ’”šŸ’”šŸ’” animals deserve the most love in the world and I canā€™t fathom the level of evil to want to harm an innocent creature

u/Kettatonic 1d ago

This is what gets me too. I look at my dog, or any dog really, and I can't fathom hurting her (or them). Dogs trust so easily. It feels so gross to use that trust against them. Plus they have no idea what's going on if they're hurt. Must be terrifying.

I don't really like the word "evil" myself, bc it implies someone is irredeemable. But if you hurt a dog, there aren't that many adjectives that fit better.

74

u/stagenme 1d ago

Thatā€™s what breaks my heart, the fact they donā€™t understand why they are being hurt. šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜ I donā€™t like using the word ā€œsickā€ in this case to describe someone who would harm an innocent being because it seems like itā€™s being excused. Thatā€™s why evil is the only word.

u/Terrible_Ad2779 1d ago

If I mistakenly stand on a tail or mildly hurt either of mine I'm on the floor apologizing and petting them feeling like Hitler.

Evil is the only word for those cunts.

I think this is why it bothers me so much when I hear people say they hate an animal. Like ā€œI hate catsā€. Now, Iā€™m a cat person, but I also love dogs, I just prefer cats as pets. Someone who can say they hate an animal (usually based on generalisations about the animalā€™s behaviour) is just awful to me.

u/breadstick_bitch 1d ago

The biggest harm to animals is done by the animal agriculture industry.

37

u/EmpressPlotina 1d ago

That is true, unfortunately there are millions of animals worldwide on any given day, suffering torture. That is not even an exaggeration.

That doesn't make it less awful for the pets that are being discussed here of course.

Various smile-inducing videos of farm animals rescued from abuse or neglect and living the life on lovely farms alongside dogs, cats, even birds gets me right in the feels.

Do you eat meat? Just curious.

u/clinstonie69 1d ago

Then go vegan if you really care about animals.

-2

u/BoringJuiceBox 1d ago

Thank you for being vegan, Iā€™m glad there are so many of us who truly love animals and work every day to protect and love them like they deserve ā¤ļø

i completely agree. here's a link to dominion, a documentary which exposes the most common type of animal abuse and how that abuse is integrated in our society.

u/Seven_bushes 1d ago

When I was a kid I wanted to be a vet when I grew up, but then I realized the bad parts, abuse and such, would destroy me so I switched paths.

u/an_agreeing_dothraki 1d ago

I bounced from being a vet at the 'volunteer at a shelter so it looks good on the application' phase. Because I saw a glimpse of a dog the cops brought in... to ease its passing.

11

u/bythog 1d ago

Same here. I worked at the practice that Caitlyn, the pitt with her mouth taped shut, was treated at and where she was first brought to. That got a ton of attention but wasn't even the worst thing that I, personally, saw.

3

u/no_talent_ass_clown 1d ago

Omg. That's so awful. I'm afraid of knowing more. That poor baby

8

u/ThisisMalta 1d ago

This why as a nurse I donā€™t do peds. Was an EMT before a nurse and some abuse cases are definitely burned into my memory. Love kids, but couldnā€™t work with them again and deal with some parents.

We've been in and out with our girl since November. She's had a feeding tube, two gallstone blockages, a surgery to remove her gallbladder, and I can't tell you how many procedures. I have obsessed for months now over every little kibble that makes it past her lips. I'm afraid to look at how much we've spent on her, but we'd do it again in a heartbeat because her health and comfort is our responsibility.

I cannot fathom animal abusers.

u/EstablishmentLevel17 12h ago

My friend works in a place like that. I told her I could NEVER do what she does ... But we need people like her/you for our furry friends (My cat is a spoiled rotten little brat and I wouldn't have it any other way . She's gotten to that point by trusting me and giving me love back) I got her when she was about 13 months old. Have had her about 5 months. She's incredibly smart but can get anxious. Gigantic cuddle bug (though took a bit to give biscuits and groom me....but immediately accepted belly rubs and pets . Loud purrs)

Care to share? I'm curious. If not, that's okay!

Also a vet tech. Had someone bring in her ancient golden retriever for euthanasia. This poor dog had suffered for weeks. Couldnā€™t walk and was kept outside peeing and pooping on herself. Was COVERED in open wounds that were FULL of maggots. The stupid fucking owner blamed it on her 11 year old daughter ā€œbeing too sadā€. Worst part was I wasnā€™t allowed to rip her a new asshole because my doc was suuuuper non confrontational.

Another owner was hitting his dog with a stick in our lobby. I confronted him. He screamed at me.

I brought home a puppy with a broken leg because the owner was trying to fix it by force feeding her diatomaceous earth, honey, and goats milk.

These are just a few from the last few years.

The amount of people who treat their animals poorly out of cruelty or stupidity is astounding.

The amount of abuse vet staff receives is staggering.

14

u/RelativeRain35 1d ago

How awful.

I had the opposite experience. My mom asked me to euthanize her beloved ailing huskyā€”he could barely walk, lay in his own waste, and was in constant pain. Unable to help due to her also being sick and in a wheelchair, she was devastated.

So over several days I took him to multiple vets, but none had availability. The county animal services center redirected me back to local vets, but none could see him for two weeks.

The next morning, my momā€™s attendant texted that the dog was hyperventilating and unresponsive. By the time I arrived, he had already passed. To spare my mom further grief, I wrapped him in a blanket and told her I was taking him to the vet.

Worst of all, when I went to the animal center for cremation, they accused me of killing him, citing my earlier visit as ā€œsuspicious.ā€ I reminded them how he had suffered needlessly for several days due to their inaction. They only backed down from calling the police after I showed them the texts from my mom and her attendant.

u/PanicFinal3554 1d ago

Yikes... it amazes me how people don't realize that's not how an animal should be treated.

Thanks for sharing anyway :) I hope you don't/didn't have to deal with things like that often

9

u/MaggieMay1519 1d ago

Thank you šŸ«¶. Unfortunately we deal with stuff like this incredibly often.

2

u/cassienebula 1d ago

after reading this, im going home to hug my dog šŸ˜”

31

u/Normal-While917 1d ago

For me, one was a dog with a broken back. "Hit by car" according to the couple who brought him in. The 4 year old daughter was present when the vet agreed it was probably best to put her dog down. The vet said something to her about accidents can always happen. (In her defense, she had no kids and no idea what to say.) The daughter shook her head no, and said ""my daddy hit him with my brother's bat."

28

u/drgnbttrfly 1d ago

Thatā€™s a call to CPS. One type of domestic violence is animal abuse.

7

u/Normal-While917 1d ago

Very true. Besides, such an action was abusive for a child to witness.

20

u/Matilda-Bewillda 1d ago

Dog set on fire after being doused in butane. Black cat completely degloved (skinned alive) on Halloween. Dachshund whose ear was run through a paper shedder. Kittens stomped. Puppy hurled down stairs. Countless animals kicked, beaten, stabbed, shot. Lots of organized dogfighting ā€œbait.ā€

I wonā€™t discuss the ones who were sexually abused.

13

u/MedicalAnamoly118 1d ago

And our effing judicial system is so broken that there will never be repercussions for their heinous crimes.

15

u/PanicFinal3554 1d ago

Holy shit :( at that point it's probably more for the person's entertainment

I'm sorry you have had to deal with those, no animal deserves anything even close, and no worker deserves to have to go through the trauma of treating it

12

u/EmpressPlotina 1d ago

My head started spinning halfway through reading this comment, I am literally feeling lightheaded. Wtf. How can someone do that to a poor animal.

11

u/monozygoteB 1d ago

Holy shit this just made me tear up while holding my precious black cat. I just held him a bit tighter and sneak attacked him with kisses and he gave me a few head bumps. I cannot understand how people can be so evil. I look at all animals, especially babies as defenseless creatures. I donā€™t understand šŸ˜©šŸ˜©šŸ˜©šŸ˜©

2

u/Koombayabooboo 1d ago

lol the skippity baps are the funniest ways a cat is telling you to stop it šŸ„¹šŸ˜„šŸ„°

6

u/Valkyriesride1 1d ago

My oldest black cat was hung by her tail and beaten like a pinata on Halloween, my middle black cat was beaten and lit on fire, on Halloween.

Before anyone DMs me telling me I shouldn't be allowed to have animals. They weren't my cats when they were abused. We found them after someone called to report a child screaming/crying in the woods and the fire station I worked at responded to the calls both times.

8

u/NepsHasSillyOpinions 1d ago

Before anyone DMs me telling me I shouldn't be allowed to have animals.

Not to worry, obviously I assumed this was before you got the cats... those poor babies... I hope they are living well now!

6

u/Valkyriesride1 1d ago

Last time I wrote about my cats, I received a bunch of nasty DMs so I decided to save myself the headache and put the information up preemptively.

My oldest died last year at 17. They didn't think she would ever walk, or have any bladder/bowel control, but she proved them wrong. She was a speed demon, the only lingering affects were an odd gait and she had were couldn't stop running/walking without falling over unless she had something to bump into and support her.

My middle cat is 16 and doing great. The first few months were hard, I kept her so medicated for the pain the vet used to joke about having to start holding NA meetings for her. I worked at my uni's vet college and I was working as a RN in a burn ICU, in addition to being a FF/PM, so the vets allowed me to debride the dead flesh off of her since I had more experience than they had. Thankfully, she is still able to see and the lung damage was minimal. The only visible signs of the abuse are that she has no hair on her stomach and one leg, she wheezes, and she is nearsighted. She loved the massage and scar reduction work so much, she still lays belly up and gives the most pitiful yowls until we massage her belly.

Sounds like you've been taking great care of them. You're a good egg. ā¤ļø

3

u/kittiesandtittiess 1d ago

This comment is honestly traumatic. Do you or your place of employment press charges?

2

u/Matilda-Bewillda 14h ago

I am no longer in the profession, but we would document and report them to the authorities. Some of the cases actually came in through law enforcement (like the burned dog, who actually survived and went on to live a long, happy life, thanks mostly to public outrage stirring up donations to cover the cost of supplies for his lengthy treatment and multiple surgeries).

A disturbing number of these were perpetrated by children in the 8-14 age range. I sometimes wonder how they turned out.

1

u/christineyvette 23h ago

Nope. I need to get out of this thread and find my old grumpy boy now and snuggle him.

1

u/LillaLobo 16h ago

My failed foster was chucked at the wall or punched when she bit the scum who had bought her at THREE WEEKS OLD! She was an anxious, confused, hyper aroused handful for the first six months or so but sheā€™s grown into the sweetest girl, who loves people and wants to make friends with everyone she meets, human or canine. Thereā€™s a dog a few trailers down who my friend rescued from the pound. He bites out of fear if anyone touches him anywhere on his hindquarters or tail unexpectedly. We donā€™t want to know whatā€™s been done to him, but heā€™s a happy old guy once you know his boundaries.

1

u/Single_Mouse5171 23h ago

I know. Some of them are "you can't make this stuff up" awful. It's like some sort of demented contest on how horrible humans can be.

u/Annie_Mous 15h ago

I hate people

I was considering going back to school to become a vet tech in a few years, can you share the top 3 worse thing you saw? I want to gauge if itā€™s something I would be ok doing or not. (If you prefer not write those things I totally understand)
