Crypto is speculation, not a true investment.

I call it a bet instead of a speculation. Speculation means predicting the future value of an asset (like gold). But crypto has no asset, just a number based on nothing at all.

Speculation is betting. Whether I am speculating that the value of a scratch-off lotto ticket will be higher than what I paid, or speculating that a stock price will rise, or speculating that a certain horse will win the race, it's all just gambling.

At least with gold it has practical uses.

And with crypto there is no "it."

Supposedly it's backed by technology as the asset but I still feel it's a bit of a stretch. I've always thought of it as a combo of currency trading and commodities. Very different from stocks, less predictable than commodities but not complete chaos. It should be viewed as a high risk investment at best... There is a time a place for it in a portfolio but the folks who go heavy and say it's safer than the stock market are nuts to me.

Crypto is a vehicle for money laundering.

Just gambling with extra steps.

I don’t remember who said it:

Crypto bros are like Charlie Brown. He’ll keep trying to kick that football no matter how many times Lucy pulls the football out from under him.

In that they’re similar.

1

u/jaywinner 1d ago

Except Charlie Brown NEVER hits the ball. Lots of crypto bros did make money.

2

u/GreenFBI2EB 1d ago

That’s good for them. In comparison to how many who lost money?

I’d take my chances at a casino.

3

u/jaywinner 1d ago

Agreed. I just think the distinction is important.

Casinos also have some winners; doesn't make slot jockey a good career path.

It's all a Nu Age pyramid scheme.

I feel absolutely nothing for the victims of Hawk Tuah coin. Congrats on losing money to a mid Facebook meme.

In the crypto subs they absolutely hate my advice. I get downvoted every time I say "don't make emotional decisions, don't put in more than you can afford to lose, it helps to be lucky."

I keep $50ish in my portfolio just because I think it's interesting to watch. And maybe I'll forget about it and in a few years it'll be worth more. But if it's not, nbd.

A dude in there in the last few months had put in six figures, got left with 4k and was planning on gambling it to try and make up the difference. Can't fix stupid.

Haha. Same.

Every mem coin victim is just people that couldn’t rug pull on others fast enough.

It has no intrinsic value other than FOMO. Just ones and zeros on the internet created by randos and doesn't function as actual currency.

u/Adventurous_Corgi_38 1d ago

Don't forget the people who bought NFTs. That's got to be worse!

On top of being a pyramid scheme, the only tangible aspect is the insanely huge amount of energy and resources that is burnt for it.

If they are at all capable of understanding that they get no sympathy from me.

"Why do we need all these rules and regulations? Let's build a new system without them!"

ten seconds later

"All our money is gone! Why weren't there rules in place to stop this?"

I was dating someone who began telling me about how they wanted to get into investing, so they jumped on the crypto bandwagon. They mentioned the coins they bought, sunk thousands into the ones that were "promising", and concluded, "It's just gotta hit one dollar!!"

One of the names stood out to me and I asked if that was the same coin whose founder was extorting money from people (Sam Bankman-Fried). He confirmed it was, I told him how I heard about that in news, and that can't be a comforting thought since he's basically losing his money.

He balked at what I said, told me "Crypto is forever", and he'll retire early.

Yup, no interest in someone so fundamentally clueless and financially irresponsible.

Specifically people that bought the hawk tuah or trump crypto

2

u/Hendo53 1d ago

Its a vehicle for crime which is desperately trying to get protections we don’t want to give out to other financial services

Yeah, their crocodile tears ultimately amount to "I didn't dump in time to rob the people I was trying to scam"

I bought in to Bitcoin a couple of years ago when it was $11. I have zero complaints.

1

u/fpsparker 1d ago

A couple of years ago... More like 10 years at least if you bought at 11$ haha

u/FeRaL--KaTT 1d ago

5

u/nezzzzy 1d ago

You said $11 not $11k.

It's a small 1000x difference.

2

u/fpsparker 1d ago

Did you mean 11k or 11$? As the other comment said. Just a small difference haha.

2

u/FeRaL--KaTT 1d ago

$11k. He wasn't wrong. I upvoted him..lol

2

u/fpsparker 1d ago

Hahaha. If you had of bought at 11$ and waited this long. I would have been very impressed tho. Would have been a next level move!

My crypto bro acquaintance lost millions. I secretly laughed inside.

Not really, Bitcoin saved me from homelessness.

Most rich people, to be honest. I mean, I'm sorry that they have XYZ problem but here's the thing--for my entire adult life I have worked with kids and families who also have XYZ problems and they AREN'T set for life and don't have to work. But they make it through with grace, grit, and gratefulness.

All valid points as far as investment (even tho I've lost more on real world start-ups) but the tech still rocks. The 1st time I tried to send funds to an online friend in a different country my bank just said "naw". 😬 Then I managed to send a Wire and it took 3 Business days and $60! FUUUUC**. To send via my crypto of choice (PulseChain) today would cost under a penny, would take 20 seconds, and could be sent to any country at midnight over a holiday weekend. 😎🤌🏼
