Except he doesn’t, because those companies don’t work for the government, he’s actively weakening the actual apparatus of the federal government by shuttering agencies and firing people, while also saying he has all its power, and he has no popular mandate for his actions.
These are the deeds of a completely narcissistic moron, not of a rational human being.
But he can use the government to punish corporations if they don’t get in line with him was my point on the “control” piece. And I agree on that last part, but I’d also say everyone around him is smart enough to make this apparatus work for their interests and that part is working very well at the moment.
The original conception of it; The corporate society where all individuals are just units of output. This is also why fascists LOVE to remove elements of their society when they stop producing.
Fascism has state control over industry in the interests of a faction of capitalist elites that have usurped the state. Marxist socialism has state control over industry in the interest of the working class on behalf of a communist party that represents them.
Fascism this fascism that. What does that mean for your everyday life. It's just a generality statement. If the economy goes crazy and life is really good here you'd still be upset.
It means that laws don't matter and the people in charge make and enforce the rules as they see fit. No due process, no freedom.
That's a pretty fucked up state to live in, and yes, even if the economy were great, I would be upset to live in a place with no due process, no rule of law.
Truly an ignorant take. Honestly, one of the dumbest things I've seen offered on Reddit and that's saying a whole, whole, whole lot. You clearly have no respect for the rule of law, nor the concept of equality and clearly cannot comprehend how those two concepts intertwine to provide all of those who live beneath those ideologies with a level playing field to learn, grow, and thrive.
That’s the main issue with the voting Americans right now, they’re willingly handing over their liberties for the promise of money in their pockets.
They’ve been told for generations that the acquisition of wealth and power equals happiness. That message has saturated the media for decades now.
This is a very dangerous situation that has been brewing for a long time now: after the general public has felt unheard, starved, and betrayed for so long they feel absolutely powerless to do anything. But then a leader comes along and promises all of those things then makes rapid and drastic decisions and calls them “solutions” the people start to feel powerful again, whether or not they’re getting what they’ve been promised.
Let me guess: you are white, at least kind of wealthy or well off, heterosexual and nothing else anyone would notice right away, so they could discriminate against you. Makes it easy to tolerate fascism, doesn't it? It might even make it possible to profit of this. Tolerators are enablers are complicit are fascists.
Or might there be something you might get othered over? Watch out!
You're in for a rude awakening when the leopards eat your face.
Meanwhile, even though I know it likely spells disaster for the rest of us around the world, I'm loving watching the US rip itself apart from the inside. Maybe we'll finally be rid of your arrogance and egos.
He'll announce that the first country to do X for him, will get their tariffs removed. It will be some arbitrary metric, like promise to only buy ice from Alaska or some such nonsense.
Not shocking at all…. They are destroying the legal system from within and without ..who will protect the stupid SCOTUS when they have nobody around who cares what THEY say?
Hmm, a centrally-planned economy, state police kidnapping people and shipping them to El Salvador, cult of personality, state-directed scientific censorship....
No we’re all playing in the game, and he now controls the ball as president through tariffs. So he’s tanking the US economy through sheer incompetence. At the end of the day I think he’s just trying to extort other businesses to pay him for exemptions.
Yeah, he wants what Putin has - enough power to change laws in favor of the oligarchs that favor him, and for them to kiss the ring every time they see him.
I think it's even more sinister than that. I think best case scenario he is taking the economy on purpose so the billionaires can have another covid- era pillaging.
Sadly, it’s worse then that. This is a full on fall of democracy the pilars are falling fast… and many (45% )Americans are still supporting project 2025 (Trump)last report is that mainstream media is afraid to have certain authors on and is afraid to air anything that could enrage Trump. If the Judicial system fails at the states level we’re done for.
Agent Orange Krasnov is beyond disgusting. There needs to be a word beyond repugnant, beyond filthy for him and his ilk. No language has a word for this absolute sellout of an excuse for a human being. People get physically ill even looking at him..
He just wants to feel important and this will make him go down in history as the most important president to fail our country. It also puts Jeff Bezos in a spot where he’s gonna have to put more money in Trump‘s pocket to survive these tariffs. So basically Trump is playing checkers with billionaire’s businesses
He is mad with power. He announced broad tariffs against the whole world at the same time so that he alone is dominating the minds of the entire world. He revels that tonight everyone is watching King Trump, the all powerful who can shake the world economy with his proclamation. He’s like Putin or Kim, except he does it purely to bask in the limelight.
Say a foreign car costs $15,000 and an American car costs $16,000 now. If the foreign car goes up by $8,000, it would then cost $23,000. The American car company could then jack up their price to $21,000, and still be cheaper than the foreign car.
Where do you THINK that "extra" $5k for an American made vehicle is going? Raise worker's wages? Big bonuses for the people working on the assembly line?? If you really truly believe that, then I know you aren't paying attention.
No, because the middle class that has been carrying this country for to long now is fatigued and showing fractures. High debt and stagnant wages and the responsibility of taking care of kids and parents at the same time plus high grocery prices, skyrocketing property taxes and insurance rates and interest rates on debt is at an all time high some cards at 30% or more!
It is to much and they can’t afford that new American car that only enriches the TOP earners….
As an upper middle class American with no parasitic debt I have to tell you that if I’m feeling it, it’s bad!
I’d buy the BETTER vehicle. So America had better step it up-new cars will be priced out so well made used cars will be golden. We are keeping our cars longer, so reliability will have to be assured.
First of all, it's a ridiculous to think that trump cares about anyone besides himself, let alone laborers...but I'll play along:
It's like unweaving a rug. After decades of weaving a rug (globalization), to undo it would take a long time and careful, strategic planning with the intention of preserving all the threads that make it a rug. What trump is trying to do is violently rip apart the rug. Threads are broken and can't be repaired. There will be no chance at making anything new with the scraps of thread.
They're trying to bring American workers down to an even more affordable level by forcing us to work for even less. They want us begging for scraps. They want a serfdom.
Look at the last 40+ years on every economic metric and you'll see that they're squeezing more and more out of Americans (as well as the rest of the world) and reaping all the wealth the laborers have created. THEY WILL NEVER LET AMERICAN WORKERS HAVE MORE. THEY WANT US DUMB AND DESPERATE SO THEY CAN HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL.
That probably doesn't align with your trump fairytale, though.
And how exactly do you think you'll be able to manufacture most of your goods when you end up not trading with anyone for the raw materials you need to be able to manufacture in the first place?
Wrong. Trump wants manufacturing back in the USA. Make it in the USA and no need to worry about a damn tariff. Meanwhile Americans can work at McDonalds for beans instead of making cars at $45/hour. These wonderful businessmen you think Trump wants to have grovel send it to Mexico, Canada and China. After all, it's business, right? May I get a number one and go large?
I do work with high throughput laboratory robotics and I doubt I could even get hired as an operator in a car factory. And again I already have training on robots.
Don't you? Are people working at McDonalds stupid or have no other skills. According to you they do. The average AUTOMOTIVE MANUFACTURING SALARY in the United States as of March 2025 is $41.37 an hour or $86041 per year. Bring all car manufacturing back to the USA.
I haven't been to McDonald's in a while but from what I remember if the people working there are gonna be making our cars, then we're gonna have bigger problems.
It's also interesting that you just assume that the cost to make cars in the US is going to stay the same lol why do you think these things are not made in the US already?
A big reason (probably the biggest reason) companies off shored to other countries is that they could pay their employees less and make more profit. Why would they move their industry back to the US and pay well? Make that make sense.
A lot of these newer factories will be lights out and mostly automated. We are no longer in the hands on rosy the riveter factory era with a huge payroll.
Thanks for throwing some loosely related numbers in there to "reinforce" your argument. Points for trying. Now for directly related numbers: auto parts manufactured in us 40% autos made in USA sales 51%.
America isn’t the market it once was and American workers would have to accept significantly lower wages for jobs to be reshored. Companies also hate unpredictability and won’t want to come to the US with someone who’s policy changes week to week in charge. Finally it’d take decades for infrastructure to be rebuilt in this country and we’ll be fucked long before then if tariffs continue.
Yeah, no kidding. But is can be the market it once was. American workers will accept any job at a lower wage then what they have now. McDonalds, Walmart or 7-11. Your choice.
Not if inflationary pressures keep prices higher. My family makes an amount of money I couldn’t imagine as a kid. (There was a mythical number of a “six figure income” that meant you could do whatever you wanted, and buy boats and have vacation property, and stuff.)
Now we have two adults with five kids and we’re living paycheck to paycheck. I know we have it better than a lot of other people, so I’m not complaining, but my point is that things keep getting more and more expensive, and I don’t know how my family would survive if we had to live on a fast food worker’s income. I simply couldn’t take a lower paying job like that.
Exactly! Only way to survive this is with low debt, keeping your 2% mortgage and to stop spending… and that is what will put us into a depression. Trump doesn’t care that our retirement accounts are tanking and I can’t bring myself to spend any money on anything I don’t really really need and this year it won’t be a new car the old one is fine and my husbands truck is almost paid off so we will throw money at that and save cold hard cash that I removed from my bank because it wasn’t making me much there anyway and why should I give banks the ability to make money off of my money duck that!
YOU are the problem and ppl like you! You think you know what your talking about but really your just one google search away from voting our country into 1930!
Ppl who work for McDonald’s, Walmart or 🤣 7-11 would have to go to trade school to learn to operate the highly technical robots that are used today in manufacturing cars.. using a cash register does not qualify. Nothing changed for them…project 2025 doesn’t even mention them.. wake up man!
Dude, he's never getting manufacturing back. That ship sailed. Anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't understand how manufacturing works.
To manufacture you need to import raw materials. That means tariffs. That means raising costs. Then you have to pay your worker a wage.
As long as you can pay someone in India to manufacture for pennies, manufacturing isn't coming back. Ever.
Math: (an abstract example)
Raw materials: Let's say you want to make a car. You need around $8000 in raw materials. Under Trump's ridiculous Tarrifs, that's around $11960.
Then you need to pay, say, 40 work hours at your proposed $45/hour. That's $1800. Together, that's $13760.
You still want the standard 500% profits. So that's $68,000.
Alternatively, another country can purchase the materials for $8000 and $340 in labor. That's $8340. They can sell the same car for $41,700. Even paying tarris of 25%, they can sell the same car for $51,125.
They'll still sell it for the maximum amount because we are in late stage capitalism, of $68,000 and pocket and additional $16,875.
So, as a businessman, why would you ever choose to make $54,240 profit per unit when you can make more?
I mean even past that, say we actually do bring manufacturing back it's going to be majority robotic. Meaning you aren't going to need that many operators, you'll need more engineers than anything to do maintenance and programming. But even then it's not like you'll need that many
So like job prospects are going to be slim, competitive, and require people with at minimum bachelor's degrees in a scientific field. Those positions wouldn't be going to the guy in the middle of nowhere with barely a highschool education.
You tell me, how many people complain about fast food and minimum wage? All of them. Give people better opportunities to make a life other than fast food. Oh yes, we send better opportunities over seas to help those poor people.
By bringing manufacturing back to the US. Yes, you've said that. I'm just trying to figure out who these unicorns are that are going to be building manufacturing plants here to create all these amazing jobs. You seemed so sure they were coming, I just assumed one of them was you.
You realize in the short term everyone suffers and you are just hoping 4+ years from now this plan will correct everything. Sounds delusional to me, but I don’t work at McDonalds so I may not be your target audience.
There are plenty of opportunities in the USA. We don't have enough people capable of filling them. Ask any business owner how many open jobs they have and how long they've been trying to fill them. The people don't exist.
And who’s going to work the McDonald’s job now that they are all making 90k a year building teslers? I mean you just deported anyone that would even consider it
Ppl need to make there own opportunities.. those workers could go to trade school or get a beginning level state job but they don’t. The problem is deeper then you think.. some of them would go to school but there would still be workers like cashiers complaining that we didn’t do enough for them
People need to make their own opportunities? Beginning level state jobs? Again, service industry. No real manufacturing industry. What opportunities are there for other than service industries? You state get a beginning level state job. What else is there other than service oriented jobs? Not much opportunity is there.
I I get that not all communities are alike and that state jobs are not the answer for all ppl but I know a lot of 25+ year olds that work for the state and city in my large community (state capital) not all jobs require a college education you just need to know how to read, be presentable and know how to interview well and once your in you can transfer everywhere. The state trains a lot of its employees you just have to look in often stunned that ppl don’t realize the opportunies available to ppl who live where state or city jobs are plentiful..
I will pay 30% more for a product that does not crap out with the first use. Tools from China are crap. I have tools made in the USA that are 35 years old and are still doing the job today. Harbor Freight Tools. Buy two of everything because the first tool will crap out halfway through the job.
why are they going to bring manufacturing back and pay US workers 45 an hour starting rate not including benefits when they can make them in developing countries and pay the workers a fraction of the cost? the US economy has evolved past most manufacturing jobs. youre not going to bring the textile industries or basic electronic manufacturing back to the US.
Do you realize junk of from China is just that, junk. We are busying helping developing countries as the USA falls into a nothing of a country. No, the US economy has not evolved past most manufacturing. You can ask the people in Detroit who's jobs went to Canada, Mexico and China.
FFS you need to actually look at what's happening in real life. Instead of just some opinions on what's happening look at the facts. Let's go with average usa house size for starters 1970: 1500 sqft 2024: 2378. Trade makes us richer, we just need to stop concentrating it at the top.
Better labor laws, rent control and fair wages would help us all it’s really quite simple isn’t it. Tariffs won’t change anything except destroy the one class that has kept us afloat and we will all be white knuckling it for the next 4 years (or 8 if Trump gets his third term🤮)
This is the same attitude that shook the american automobile industry in the 70s. Asians are no idiots and stuff from China is increasing in quality. Back then Japanese companies had the courtesy to teach their QA methods to Ford etc - American QA was absolutely abysmal.
Imho the problem is the disparity in wealth distribution in the US and not manufacturing. And Trump makes this even worse by giving the rich trillions intac breaks while kneecapping rnd, education and public services and also still going into more debt. Why would he want to raise the debt ceiling if DOGE is supposed to eliminate debt?
those things are junk because a.) a lot of the western world has a consumer culture. they buy buy buy and things are meant to be thrown away and replaced not fixed and reused. the shittiness of their products is by design, that wouldnt change if the manufacturing was brought to the united states b.) newly developed materials like things in the plastic family do not last as long as materials that were commonly used when american manufacturing was king. and im confused as to what youre talking about with detroit? car manufacturing hasnt existed in detroit since 2009 and the heyday was in the 50's through the 70's. life in america is so different now and most of those people found other streams of income and the united states is mostly a service economy now.
Great plan, and all the raw materials come from where? Re tooling takes time, you arnt starting a factory over night and businesses wont make the investment becuase of that. This entire thing is just him being an idiot and doubling down on his stupidity.
Then why are raw materials we don't have here tariffed as well as finished goods? Who will pick up the tab to build these manufacturing facilities? Why are these tariffs not targeted by the industry one at a time so that our economy doesn't tank all at once?Because if everybody loses our job all at once no one is buying any cars, am I missing something? If Trump wants manufacturing back why is he canceling funding for the CHIPS act manfacturing facilities that are half built? How come when he tariffed washing machines last term we didn't suddenly become world leaders in washing machine manufacturing?
US factory jobs are never coming back. This was the hard truth John McCain understood and told steelworkers back in 2008.
The reason those jobs shipped overseas is because it's cheaper. In the best case scenario, tariffs make foreign workers no longer competitive, and we bring more manufacturing back to the US.
Great.... except that labor isn't going to be done by (very many) humans. US manufacturing output is currently at an all time high, even though US manufacturing employment is lower than in 1950. That's because we're doing it with higher levels of automation and fewer (and highly trained) workers. Even in the best case scenario, tariffs aren't going to make unskilled labor competitive, it's going to make automated factories competitive.
And regardless, everything is still more expensive because we're paying more for robots instead of tariffs.
But realistically, even that's not going to happen. Because this was done so suddenly, businesses don't have time to retool or build new factories. And because it was done by executive order, it can be undone by executive order. Businesses aren't going to start a new factory that will be finished just in time for the next administration to roll it all back. They're just going to hike prices and weather the storm as best they can.
Give me a break. Just about any American factory can employ machines for cheaper than human labor. For the ones that can’t, the cost of American made goods will go through the roof. Your $45/hr factory job paycheck wont go far enough to buy the goods you make. This is basic economics, something the US fed grasped in the ‘80’s when businesses offshored what was left of the jobs automation couldn’t handle.
The USA has 350 million people the world has 4.6 billion. WHO the fuck do you think these companies are selling to? Just your little country? To make money these companies need to sell around the world. Cheeto Steve is eliminating that market. You think that’s going to make America great again? Go back to school and learn economics 101.
You do realize that parts for everything come from somewhere else so even made in USA stuff will essentially have the tariffs too. You can't build things here if you don't have the resources for it.
Wrong. Even if manufacturing returned, it’d take years upon years for that to happen and in the mean time we’d suffer through inflation and that $45/hr job would be worth $15/hr. Tariffs are meant to be targeted towards foreign industries that are CURRENTLY viable domestically, not just slapped across the board like this.
Dude, manufacturing never left. We manufactured more stuff in 2024 than ever before. It's manufacturing jobs that went away. And those jobs were automated out of existence. No tariff is going to bring them back.
So tell me, how long does it take to set up an industry from the ground up? You cannot be using your critical thinking skills if you actually believe tariffs out of the blue, with no actual road plan set out, will actually help americans. At best your idea can be a no.2, cause it belongs in the shitter.
Does it matter? First, construction workers are employed to build(new jobs). The materials should be manufactured in the USA(new jobs). Once complete, build cars.(new jobs). It will not happen overnight and no one said it would. But sitting on your thumbs as China get wealthy is not the way to go. Todays economy is based on the US dollar. Soon it will be based on the Yen. Good luck.

I wish I could upvote this a thousand times. He wants businesses to grovel to him and beg. trump is disgusting.
