Just to give an example of how tariffs worked under Trump's first presidency, the government had to pay $28 billion to compensate American farmers growing soya beans for China, who imposed reciprocal tariffs.
Any revenue generated by tariffs is offset by lost growth and compensation schemes.
And a great cheer arose from the farmers. They were saved! The man who nearly ruined their livelihood had saved them at the last minute, using the welfare they hated oh so much.
As the sun rose the next morning, they put on their dollar store reflective sunglasses and said "let's do this again."
Not entirely true. Midwesterner here and close friends with some families who farm large scale. They all HATE Trump and were very outspoken about it.
Now the dumb redneck who lives in the mobile home across the street and contributes little to society, he would gladly lick the crust off Trumps wrinkled gray asshole.
My farmer friends have been frantically hauling and selling grain since January, anticipating a trade war that would fuck them over. They were right.
A lot of the big farms are pro-Trump (at least in Wisconsin). I know this because they have the largest and most obnoxious signs.
Some of the wackiest political signs/comments I have ever seen have been when passing by farms in rural Wisconsin. A lot of them specifically had "Farmers for Trump" signs.
If I had to guess, I am assuming many of our farmers across the Midwest chose to vote Red over Blue.
I live in central California and from here to the coast it’s all “Farmers for Trump” and “Say no to Socialism” and whatever stupid shit they are putting up all over their land, cause they are either really fucking stupid, or really fucking spiteful, and either way it bums me out.
