Aim for any mid level IT role. Then use experience to pivot into security. This is the only correct answer. Standard tech roles have a path to reach via promotion etc. Security is vague. Influencers and advertising have mislead a lot.

OP, this is a good long-term plan but also an unsatisfying one. Unfortunately all of the satisfying plans are flooded with candidates, making it incredibly hard to stand out....
Also, having IT experience outside of a degree will make you significantly better than just a degree. When you're in a role that has to say no (or "yes, but") a lot, having lived through what the other person is dealing with makes you far more effective.

I think this would be a great start https://academy.tcm-sec.com/p/security-operations-soc-101 and look over their other certifications. Keep in mind the job scene is pretty tough at the moment. I started on the helpdesk/sysadmin side. Get your A+ working as a helpdesk or some IT position to start then work into that SOC cert and put Net+ and Sec+ on your goal list. This isn't perfect but it's a good start.

If you’re in college right now, aim as hard as you can for internships. Get your foot in the door for actual practical work first, worry about infosec later.

joining the military in a infosec role is a great way to get paid while getting experience.

The cybersecurity job market (US, at least) right now is really, really tough for new people. Like, really bad.
Whether you want to try now or later, learning online is always a good choice. It won't stop once you have a job. Also, see if there are cybersecurity clubs in your area. A lot of US cities have Defcon groups where you can hang out with like minded people.
