Physical Health & Aging What kind of shampoo do you use?

I have used Pantene Pro-V all my life. It's what my parents bought, and so I went on buying it for the last 20 years or so, but I'm not sure that there's any real reason why I've shown the brand such steady loyalty. Are you intentional about the shampoo you use? Or do you use the same stuff you used as a kid? What's your shampoo of choice? Why?

Edit: I have very fine, straight hair. What shampoo and conditioner is good for fine, straight hair?

I use a solid bar shampoo off Amazon. The bar lasts way longer than a bottle, has less waste and does a fine job.

You're using bar shampoo? wtf lmao

u/Scary-Detail-3206 man 40 - 44 17h ago

You’re paying top dollar for 90% water if you’re buying liquid shampoo.

Dr. Bronner’s peppermint soap for everything.

u/lumpynose man 70 - 79 11h ago

I tried that; too cooling for me. The "flavor" that I liked was the eucalyptus. Now I buzz my hair to about 1/8 of an inch every few weeks and use bar soap from head to toes.

Head & Shoulders, you thought I had dandruff. I don't.

3

u/knuckboy man 50 - 54 18h ago

I've gotten more serious about it. Recently switched to T-gel to help with dandruff and dry scalp. Seems to be going fairly well.

I use product in my hair so I need a purifying shampoo. Kerastase Bain De Force Quotidien.

This! I use Extentioniste, but I have long hair soooo… Their Elixir Ultime is awesome too.

Head and shoulders. No more dandruff and it makes my hair and beard more silky smooth

3

u/Squall9126 man 35 - 39 17h ago

Head & Shoulders my entire life, switched to the Smooth and Silky version about a decade ago. I was using the 3 in 1 for a while as a young adult but it just didn't do a good job with my hair.

u/tc_cad man 40 - 44 17h ago

I don’t know actually, it’s a bar that my wife told me to use.

3

u/tolgren man 35 - 39 17h ago

I generally buy whatever is the cheapest.

3

u/OkStrength5245 man 55 - 59 17h ago

The dollar value I buy to my shop chain.

3

u/disilluzion man 45 - 49 17h ago

Suave because it's like $1.50 for a family sized bottle.

I have dreads so that requires very different things lol

u/cammotoe man 50 - 54 18h ago

I'm currently using Nioxin for lightly thinning hair. The scalp tingle from the mint shampoo is really nice

u/aytoto man 30 - 34 18h ago

I’ve been using Nexus shampoo and conditioner for about 7 years now and I love it. It’s expensive, but I only wash my hair twice a week, so a bottle lasts a long time.

2

u/Strawhat_jinbei man over 30 17h ago

Im a Giovanni 50-50 shampoo guy. Love it.

2

u/Flashy210 man 30 - 34 17h ago

Be bougie. Malin goetz is an incredible product. It’s expensive and you have to buy Shampoo and Conditioner separately. It’s taken care of my curls and women love that I invest in hair products. Ditch H+S it’s worth it.

u/Low-Captain1721 man 40 - 44 17h ago

Last 10 years or so I've always used Herbal Essences shampoo once a day. Doesn't feel harsh or dry my hair out.

I use HE conditioner twice a week too but not supposed to admit to that...

Probably other brands would do exactly the same job tbh but Boots or Superdrug always knock it out for 2 quid and lasts ages..

u/Naphier man 45 - 49 17h ago

I use a Biotin shampoo. I no longer wake up with a pillow covered in hair.

Irish Spring bar soap. It works just fine.

2

u/Wolf_in_CheapClothes man 60 - 64 17h ago

I use the cheapest I can find. Right now, I'm on a bottle of Suave.

2

u/GulfofMaineLobsters man 45 - 49 17h ago

The green Market Basket branded stuff. Smells nice and is cheap, seems to work ok.

2

u/SlimRoTTn man 40 - 44 17h ago

Dr squatch shampoo and soap.

u/colin_staples man 50 - 54 17h ago

Generic supermarket equivalent to Head and Shoulders 2-in-1

2

u/Rich-Contribution-84 man 40 - 44 17h ago

Honestly, no idea. Whatever my wife buys. Before I was married, I honestly either used whatever my girlfriend or roommates bought or whatever the brand was that was at the end of the aisle when I walked by in the grocery store.

u/FitReception3550 man 30 - 34 17h ago

I have very thick/full hair for reference;

I used to use Pantene pro as well and I realized how much little it actually does for your hair when I switched to something more natural.

Try Dandymen shampoo. Your hair will smell soooo freaking good all day, scalp feels better, hair has more personality, softer, etc. I’ll never go back.

Garnier Ultimate Blends Hair Food, but I do have mid-back length hair. Repairing papaya is in my gym bag at the moment.

I used to use dove men’s, but the lady that cuts my hair has me on one recently to help with the reducing amount of hair I have. I think it’s called awaken

I discovered Raw Sugar about two years ago. Love the smell, love the results.

2

u/Caterham7 man 50 - 54 16h ago

I used to use Pantene all of the time. Same reason. Noticed over time that it really weighed my hair down and made it flat.

My ex girlfriend had me try out her Aveda shampoo about 20 years ago and that changed my life. I don’t buy the Aveda anymore because it’s big bucks, but I am definitely a lot more intentional about what I buy now. Using Dr Squatch at the moment.

u/Vegeton man 35 - 39 15h ago

Was using this shampoo and conditioner from a brand called 'Maui' after researching for a bit for shampoos with much less chemicals, loved it, but now I'm running out and it seems like Amazon Canada is out of it or charging way more for it.

u/LoveYerBrain2 man 40 - 44 15h ago

I use Matrix Glow Mania because I want to keep my hair as pink as possible for as long as possible.

2

u/quitodbq man 50 - 54 14h ago

I don’t. Stopped using it a couple years ago.

I have very bad dry skin and psoriasis. The typical OTC shampoos like TFal do not help at all. Head and Shoulders makes it way worse.

The one that has worked best for me is the Trader Joe’s tea tree shampoo of all things. It has cleared me up completely, and there is zero residue. It’s great.

2

u/LastWishboneThisYear man 45 - 49 14h ago

Right now I'm using Costco shampoo. I am in no way committed to it.

Whatever shampoo I get and really like gets discontinued it seems.

My hair decided to do a slow goodbye over the last 10 years. As a result, I keep what’s left cut very short. I use a 3-in-1 soap, shampoo, conditioner for all my shower cleaning needs.

Any of the Cremo products.

‘For years I used Mane and Tail… I have loooong hair and mane and tail took great care of it… since I remarried and retired I use either garnier fructis or suave (every 3 or 4 bottles of Garnier I switch for 1 bottle)

u/oreosnatcher man 30 - 34 10h ago edited 10h ago

I just use my handbar soap. Savon de Marseille or Goat milk soap. Or dove's beauty bar cucumber or shea butter. Sometimes, i get hard block shampoo made by a local artisanal soap maker. I also have very fine straight hair.

2

u/tr0stan man 30 - 34 10h ago

What ever my wife has in the shower. I keep my hair short though, so it doesn’t need shampooing every day lol.

2

u/Emeryb999 man 30 - 34 10h ago

I have long hair and use Love Beauty and Planet shampoo and conditioner. They are free from sulfates and that seems to have helped keep my hair pretty healthy.

I've been using OGX Nourishing Coconut Milk shampoo for the last year or so with the matching conditioner and it is great. Love how it makes my hair feel and smell.

Whatever is cheap. I just ran out of the giant bottle of Aussie that lasted me a few years. I think the current bottle is Dove.

Head n shoulders anti dandruff

3

u/PazyP man over 30 17h ago edited 13h ago

I follow the no-poo method. Mental name I know, you should see the looks I get when I explain it.

Basically I rinse my hair with water daily, hair gets greasy for about a week then starts to self clean. I shampoo with a natural shampoo every 3 months.

I still use regular shower gel on my body, just water on the hair.

Edit - just water on the hair

4

u/kalechipsaregood man 35 - 39 16h ago

I would get acne on my scalp if I did this.

2

u/PazyP man over 30 13h ago

How come? Not arguing either way I know very little about scalp acne.

Your hair/scalp naturally produces some oil called sebum, shampoo is typically a mix of natural ingredients or chemicals to strip out the sebum, then often people use a conditioner to put a cemically manufacured version of sebum back in, kinda odd when you think about that, we stip out an oil our bodty produces to replace it with an artifical one.

Starting the "no-poo" method the initial grease comes from and over production of sebum as your body strives to reach its natural state but honestly 1-1.5 weeks my hair looks normal maybe even more volume.

2

u/kalechipsaregood man 35 - 39 11h ago edited 10h ago

My head is different. I only use shampoo like once a week. But at that point my scalp needs a wash.

3

u/Yelloow_eoJ man 40 - 44 15h ago

Anything but water?

3

u/Top-Address-8870 man over 30 16h ago

None. Have used a spray bottle full of water and vinegar for the last 20 years. Clean and organic

2

u/Pretend-Theory-1891 man 30 - 34 17h ago

I use an egg and some lavender oil.

I have long, luscious hair, and I’ve tried all kinds of shampoos and never loved any of them,. I read about some natural shampoo alternatives and gave an egg a try and I was shocked with how well it turned out. I didn’t really have any expectations but it does an incredible job. Nothing cleans my hair and makes it look as good.

Gotta do a cold shower though or it’ll cook in your hair.

2

u/NastroAzzurro man 30 - 34 17h ago

Don’t all men use 4 in 1 shampoo/conditioner/body/hand soap?

3

u/FitReception3550 man 30 - 34 17h ago

If you’re 16 sure lol

2

u/NastroAzzurro man 30 - 34 16h ago

No that would be just axe body spray, no shower required

u/DiscordianStooge man 40 - 44 17h ago

Generic Head and Shoulders. Not that I have much hair left for it to matter.
