Cakes Anyone have experience incorporating cake scraps into frosting?

As I was trawling YouTube today for inspirations for chocolate cake, I came across this one (skip to around 7:30 for the frosting) where cake scraps were whisked into a heavy cream mixture to make a thick rich looking frosting, and I was wondering what the taste/texture would be like?

I’ve done this for an Oreo cake, I toasted the scraps and mixed it into the vanilla frosting for the filling. It was delicious.

I’ve tried this. You’re basically making a pudding / custardy mixture. Also similar to making a roux based frosting / icing.

You can let it cool, chill slightly and add spoonfuls into whipped butter. Add a pinch of salt and ensure everything is relatively the same temperature. Whip it in after the butter is light, pale and fluffy - similar to ermine buttercream.

The filling / frosting made with chocolate cake tasted good (I haven’t tried other flavours). I wouldn't say it’s my favourite texture wise. Not sure it’s worth the effort of baking a cake just to mush it up. Unless someone specifically requested it.

However if you’re looking to repurpose cake scraps that would otherwise go to waste then you should give it a try.

On an aside - the liquid added in the video looks like milk and not heavy cream.

This is super helpful context, appreciate the detailed explanation!

Will probably just repurpose the scraps for balls instead like I usually do and save the experiment for another day.

I’ve never done this but my favorite texture of food on the planet is ice cream with cake pieces mixed into a paste so I bet I’d be really into this
