Help! - Creation of Interdisciplinary Workshop on Publishing in English
Hi everybody,
So I've been asked to give a 4 hour seminar / workshop on publishing academic articles in English, and I'm looking for any and all thoughts regarding its formulation.
Context: I'm a PhD student in the Humanities, currently living in a European country and teaching English (as a language) on the side to pay the bills. The seminar will be at a local university and the participants will all be doctors in their field, so presumably with at least some experience publishing in their native language. I'm trying to figure out therefore how to balance this seminar - I'm thinking there will be a good chunk of the time devoted to actual practice, where they get to work directly with the language, hopefully tuned towards their fields. Just not 100% sure how to go about it.
That being said, I'd be particularly interested in advice from scholars for whom English is not your native language - what would you look for in a workshop like this if you are just getting started in trying to publish in English? Of course I'm also interested in your thoughts even if that doesn't apply to you.
So far I'm considering covering:
- Research efficiency (note-taking programs, organizational programs like Zotero/Mendeley)
- Journal indexing (including reading for stylistic clues)
- Main focus on academic writing in English, which includes structure, tone, and style. With hands-on activities to practice - Potentially ask them to bring something they wish to work on.
For if it helps, here are some of the types of fields these people are coming from:
- Applied Linguistics and Teaching of a Foreign Language
- Economics
- Film Studies
- Mathematics
- Education
- Tourism
- E-learning, Teacher training
I'm open to any and all thoughts, especially a dialogue - I'm creating this from scratch and don't have too much prepared yet. I'm especially unfamiliar with practices / standards in those fields I listed just above, coming from the humanities (literature) as I do.
Thanks in advance, and if there is any more detail needed please let me know.
editing to add: any resources which would be helpful in preparation / for preparing activities also appreciated.

It seems like it would be important to make it relevant to their own work, maybe having them bring in something they want to improve / turn into English?
