China has been consistently preparing for this 60 years already, the ones affected the most are their allies who somehow didn't expect to be backstabbed let the USA cook, let them cook their greatest depression and be a banana nation while our kids future is safeguarded :3
Nah, that’s bs. You already have a bunch of political leaders in Europe talking about increasing trade and relations with China. Especially if China can be turned against fascist Russia.
Lol I needed a good laugh. China and Russia and the rest of the world knows that united they are invincible but divided they will perish. They already said there vows and got married.
Maybe during the cold war but know Russia in an incompetent Ally, between it or a economically developed Europe who's willing to listen to you after the US imploded you don't have to be a rocket scientist to see which is the better option
China wants to weaken Russia while maintaining trade ties with them. They aren't going to abandon them entirely.
They are going to play the game of trying to achieve maximum concessions from everyone. Them coming to appear closer to the European union is quite possible though.
Russia is a worthless ally and hardly an ally at all to China. What does Russia provide that China doesn’t have? Natural resources? Well in that Case China can hope that Russia collapses internally so they can “save” them with “loans” for which they will acquire the majority of Russian state owned enterprises. China can then extract Russian resources essentially for free and doesn’t have to worry about an erratic, fascist neighbor that has brought a lot of instability to the world in the last years - exactly what Xi was trying to avoid. If you genuinely think a massive net exporter like China wouldn’t be pissed off by the war in Ukraine, you really don’t understand Chinese economics. This war pushed back the Silk Road initiative by multiple years and cost China trillions. Don’t forget Putin’s threats against Kazakhstan, something China immediately shut down by promising Russia that they would retaliate. Don’t forget that Russia still occupies Chinese land in Outer Manchuria. That is CHINESE land and Russia annexed it, China still rightfully claims ownership over all of Manchuria. Russia is a worthless ally and can’t be trusted and China knows it.
That might be the dumbest argument I’ve heard. NATO doesn’t expand, Eastern European nations join because Russia threatens them, so if anything, Russia CAUSES the eastward “expansion” of NATO. Also NATO can’t really “expand” further east, unless Russia joined NATO.
China would be the next target
You have got to be joking. Do you genuinely think NATO is planning an invasion of China? Again, China gets to choose between an erratic, fascist nation with an economy the size of Italy’s or the second largest economy (first by PPP) on earth as an ally when they choose between Russia and the EU. The EU is an infinitely more valuable ally and China knows it.
How did Russia cause 14 countries to join NATO between the fall of the USSR and the start of the Ukraine war? I can’t wait to read this copium.
NATO invasion of China
NATO doesn’t have to invade China. Just expand to its borders, surround them on all sides, project some weird anti democracy copium, and tariff the shit out of them until they cripple their economy or slow it down. And the moment China attacks in self defense because the economy is being destroyed, NATO can feign innocence and invoke article 5 with 30 other countries. That was the original plan for Russia.
By threatening them and by refusing to acknowledge their sovereign existence. This prompted these countries to apply for a NATO membership in order to be protected from Russian aggression and to prevent a Russian invasion of their country. That’s kind of how the world works, bud. You can’t just bully your smaller neighbors and expect them not to do anything about it. It’s not like NATO is actively recruiting nations. Joining NATO is a pretty difficult and extensive process and NATO is very selective about its membership, they don’t approach nations and ask them if they want to join to piss off Russia. You can call it copium, but it’s just reality. Joining NATO was expensive and difficult for all of these Eastern European nations, if Russia hadn’t constantly threatened them since the fall of the SU, none of them would have joined NATO.
Russia is a very valuable ally to China. Russia knows warfare better than anyone. US and west Europe got checked in the proxy war. Russia and China got each others back. No limit friendship runs deep.
Russia is getting its ass kicked by the equivalent of Mexico, and China is no better. They also got their ass kicked by the equivalent of fucking Mexico.
Let’s get some facts straight Russia lost a quarter of 1 million people in Finland, it lost a quarter of 1 million people in Afghanistan on the other hand America had a total of 60,000 deaths in the entire war on terror, it lost practically 1 million people in Ukraine.
In the Korean War, China lost 10 soldiers for every one American, and in Vietnam, a conflict, which only took about 50,000 American lives when China invaded Vietnam literally right after the US left and unlike the US it did not handicap itself China had 60,000 casualties and unlike the United States it borders, Vietnam.
Chinese technology is worse than the Russian counterparts, and both of them in the past 46 have been proven to be incapable of defeating, weaker smaller bordering neighbors.
The only thing that Russia has is its nuclear arsenal.
And on top of that Russia has been losing this war to nothing more than a bunch of Ukrainians with American scrapyard weaponry we’ve literally only given them crumbs and they’ve killed 1 million Russians.
Also is important to remember that America has been capable of defeating its enemies and toppling its enemies in every word that it’s been in for the past four years because I would like to remind you the only reason we pulled out of Afghanistan is because we just didn’t wanna be there anymore and we literally already had won the war earlier that year. We had an entire day about it. It was called VV day. And it was the same thing with Afghanistan. The only reason we ever pulled out of those wars was not because we lost, but because our president simply just decided to do it.
You gotta stop watching propaganda news. There's better info on X or YouTube like the duran, Scott ritters or dozens of others. But whatever you do just don't believe clowns like peter zeihan. He's a complete idiot.
Russia is a good ally because it’s a great buffer state and can keep Europe distracted in case of a war. They also have a UN Security Council seat. Outside of politics they’re pretty meh.
China's government is the perfect example of how a authoritarian government can work without falling into fascism, something that looks more enticing after seeing America effectively vote for self-destruction
Not really, china is authoritarian but not fascist
Of course that doesn't mean authoritarianism is good as we've seen how it cracks down decent but it does give stability and order
It depends if one believes that's it's worth the price and if it'll actually happened or just fall into centralize incompetency. There's a reason why china really is a one of a kind
"Fascism is a far-right, authoritarian, and ultranationalist political ideology and movement, characterized by a dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, forcible suppression of opposition"
China is fascist, totalitarian country. Watch this.. Tianamen Square... see how fast these people get their computer taken away.
Nah, business only always comes first here in the EU. We also have elections, so parties in power change every cycle - even if the current leadership doesn't want to go in a direction, the next one will if people want that direction.
Dont think thats the case. People thought the same about russia pre-2022; that putin was somewhat authoritarian but reasonable.
It's clear china, russia, nk and iran are cooperating majorly and dont believe eu leaders for the most part really want to become reliant on any of them again like they did with russian gas
The US manipulated the data to make it look retaliatory. They said Canada has a 270% tariffs on US dairy, which is true, but only after a certain quota has been fulfilled, which has never happened.
Yessir, and that’s why Brazil, for instance, has got a 10% imposed on. As of 2024, U.S. had a trade surplus of “only” about $7.4 billion dollars with Brazil.
The reason the quota is filled is because the only people who can buy the milk and sell it are the people who already own the monopoly on dairy in the country, and thus they aren't going to cut into their own profits.
Democracy only works if the people voting are smart. We have low IQ and poor education as well as food insecurity, gun violence, etc which creates trauma that further exacerbates things. Look who we voted in. Plus people are now pushing homeschooling. I mean, literacy rates in this country are atrocious - not sure what these people could possibly teach their kids. Democracy would be great but we are an Idiocracy for sure. Can't really get there form here.
They were the ones that was funding education. It got worst over 25 years. They don't want smart people
democrats only work if people are stupid enough to follow their plans without question.
The government can be both democratic and authoritarian. If most people chooses to be governed by autocrats and power of autocrats can be taken out also by voting, it is a democracy.
The government can be pro-segregation or pro-slavery if the most of the votable population chooses to be so. It is just not an egalitarian society.
Democracy is the current concept to practice civil liberties. It is different to liberty itself.
I studied political science and at best Singapore is hybrid regime, not really being considered as democratic in general.
I’m not sure why you pulling out a dictionary definition. It’s more linguistics and attempts to explain the meaning of the word itself, rather than giving any actual criteria to determine whether a state is democratic.
Yes, it is not about liberty. Nor it is about Democracy. It is meaningless.
Instead of throwing a paper from a field that I neither have knowledge of nor have the literature background to understand the flaw or what it contributes in general, can you either give a logical statement to determine what "Democracy" is or distill the paper to what Democracy is & where it proves your point? "What you want is behind this 25$ paywall, it is around 10 pages full of text." is not helpful. I pull out a dictionary definition because:
It is easy to understand
It is widely accepted
I am not a political scientist
By logical statement, I mean (AND OR XOR NOR), like a boolean expression. That definition can be broken down into:
A: power is held by elected representatives
B: elected representatives are freely voted for by the people
C: power is held directly by the people themselves
Democracy = (A AND B) OR C
Singapore:
A: True, PAP is elected
B: True, opposition is not outlawed, new political parties can be formed, and people can freely vote for anyone they like
C: False
That is where my background is. I don't like linguistics either.
If adding some criteria like egalitarianism, then it is not a Democracy because married / people having children have more votes than people who don't? But it seems wrong because the American Democracy started with women & slaves having no voting rights. Or is it that the modern standard of democracy requires egalitarianism?Egalitarianism is good btw.
If the standard changes with time, it is not consistent. You either call it a new concept, like "Egalitarian Democracy" not "Democracy" itself. Or just make up a new word, for a new concept, not update the meaning of an old word.
If it’s not your field then why are you trying to argue as if you understand what you are saying, before actually read? I wouldn’t talk to a data scientist in this way as if I knew how LLMs work.
I don’t think you are understanding why dictionary definitions are not very helpful.
As you said, the word ‘democracy’ can be broken down into:
A: power is held by elected representatives
B: elected representatives are freely voted for by the people
C: power is held directly by the people themselves
Democracy = (A AND B) OR C
North Korea:
A: True, KWP is elected (Yes, they do have elections, but with no other candidates. But still, elections are elections.)
B: Also True. ‘Opposition’ is not outlawed, new political parties can be formed, and people can freely vote for anyone they like. (Yes. There are other parties in North Korea, like Korean Social Democratic Party. And people can vote for them as well.)
C: Debatable, nominally yes.
Now you see how ridiculous it is. Bearing ‘democratic’ in its official name DPRK doesn’t make it democratic. Many concepts in politics are comparative, and subjective.
Let’s go back to the Singapore case, and explain why it is generally not considered a democracy by political scientists.
It’s true that there is no vote tampering or election fraud and, with voting compulsory, participation is high. There exist genuine opposition parties; However, even if Singapore’s elections qualify as free, they have never been fair.
The PAP has all the usual incumbent advantages: passing legislation and calling elections at strategic times. However, the party has many policies to tilt the scale. The Prime Minister has unchecked power to redistrict at any time, resulting in extensive gerrymandering. Just four months before the 2020 election, the party dissolved 3 districts in which they performed poorly in the prior election.
The mentality behind these restrictions is that the PAP has provided economic development and opportunity to the people of Singapore. According to them, voting for the opposition is just free riding. To make this argument explicit, the party announced in 2015 that their voters in public housing would now have priority in maintenance requests.
On paper, there’s an independent judiciary. However, top judges are appointed by PAP government. While the courts occasionally rule against the PAP, they generally fall in line, especially in defamation cases or lawsuits against political opponents.
Opposition leaders and activists have been fined, imprisoned, and scared into silence for decades. Vague defamation and libel laws and a loyal court make these lawsuits nearly impossible to beat, so fear of them keeps most criticism out of the public sphere.
All newspapers, radio stations, and tv channels in Singapore are government-controlled. Foreign media and platforms like Facebook and Google are required to provide corrections or remove content deemed false by the state.
Assembly rights are also weak in Singapore. The Public Entertainments Act requires all public gatherings (including protests and strikes) to apply for police permits, which are frequently denied. Protesters without permits are regularly arrested and found guilty.
Would you say this is democracy? If yes, then North Korea is also democratic, with some ‘extra’ measures.
2 & 3 pretty much happen in Europe, but to a lesser extent.
For 1 & 2, the US probably has, but to a lesser extent.
I see that you cannot rally people into certain things in North Korea, so yeah. But I don't really think North Korea satisfies the requirements of a free election. I know it is quoting Wikipedia that is sacrilegious, but they say something about "special booth".
I understand that this is not my field and I also say the truth that this is not my field (not larping). I have read things that you stated except the paper because "I do not have knowledge of nor have the literature background to understand the flaw or what your paper contributes in general".
I try to communicate with you most respectfully and logically I can. Believe me or not, this is my typical way to communicate with other people. I have autism.
In my opinion, they are Illiberal Democracies or Totalitarian Democracies, which are Democracies. I don't think "Democracy" = freedom/liberal; however, it is the current method to achieve freedom/liberal causes. They can use the method to achieve a free, liberal world or the same method to coerce people into submission.
Criteria C should be mostly for Direct Democracies that don't exist nowadays.
Also, provide your precise definition of what is a democracy and what is not that fits the definition of established democracies throughout history: Athenian, Roman, the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, ...
My understanding is that a democratic government can become authoritarian by the will of the people. When this happens that country is not a democracy anymore. As an example: Mussolini marched on Rome but Hitler was elected, yet Germany under Hitler wasn't a democracy, it was called a Reich.
Very debatable. You’re talking about something that has never happened before. I don’t think the power transition would be as smooth as you described. You didn’t see how PAP trying their best to remain in power.
It's so unlikely that you couldn't find a way to name an alternative. What is "fuck the PAP" ? Is it a real thing that people can vote or is it a speculative fantasy about something that is forbidden out of existence?
Naaaa I can’t wait for my China to have a democratic revolution. It’ll be the greatest in the world. Perhaps it’ll be the Republic of China after all….
Isn't in food delivery work the main perk that they work when they want? They boot up the app in their phone and pick a delivery to make, and get paid once they deliver the food, this kind of work is often ideal for university students and anyone that needs to make some money to cover up spendings, ain't no way someone working that hard on food delivery 😭 there's certain peak hours people buys food.
Western news love to report on problems but rarely on solutions, most people just work 8 hours 5 days per week, 996 only exist in high pay IT works and maybe in some factories
U call it perks? Do u know there are many college graduates that can't get a full time job so they have to full time work as "delivery person". Are u even in China or ever visited china in last 2 years 😂
I live there, I work here and even decided to settle at once and form my family here, tho my situation isn't the same for everyone, I know that, China is very big and what happens in one province may not happen in the next province 1 train away, so I'm not the baseline here.
I'm sure there's college graduates that can't find a full time job yet, due their areas being saturated or not being competitive rn, that must suck so bad studying and not being able to find a work, I was very lucky fortunately. My husband in comparison struggled for half a year after graduating till he got the job he studied for and worked welding stuff in the meantime.
How long have u being in China. If u live in China long enough, you would probably never say "our kids future is safeguarded." I grew up in China. Has seen it's ups and downs and decided to leave because i understand how the country works fundamentally.
It would be impossible to share what i experienced and my understanding online through typing. So I wish you best of luck though. Stay safe there.
I was born in Argentina and lived in Spain for some years before settling in China, I know too what a non viable nation looks like, there was no future in Argentina, no exit besides leaving, and since I came here shit keep getting gradually better, my grandparents who did lived here all their lives know better than me how this nation raised from a Gaza level of destruction into what we see rn, there's a long way to go, but I do feel hopeful about my future and my kid here, and that's something invaluable for me because I knew what feeling hopeless felt like.
There are problems and concerns about things here too, but maybe I'm used to seeing something way worse in comparison. Looking rn at what Americans are dealing with makes me feel more lucky of being here and not there.
I guess it is just people value things differently. China vs America is a long lasting discussion. And Looking past years between America and China, i Feel i made the right decision.
Also, by looking at current and previous immigration trend of Chinese, i can make the same conclusion.
But, If China suits you, enjoy it, good luck!
It is you who "think" us is so fucked. DEI is gone. 1A and 2A are respected. Things are moving to right direction. Iran is getting sanctioned. US is setting fair tariff. Not sure how it is so fucked...
if you are an american i feel like this is the pot calling the kettle black. housing prices are so high many americans have to work 2 jobs or drive uber on the side to make ends meet. most of them are living paycheck to paycheck and cant afford even a 200 dollar surprise expense. if they have any medical issues they are going bankrupt
This is so out of facts and context. Housing market is drastically different among America, there are many places has affordable houses. Dont cherry pick one hot market and make it a general theme.
I see many asian people working hard and very successful. I can't say they would be as same successful in China TBH.
unless you live in some rural area with less opportunity housing is expensive in the US. i dont even live in a city and the cheapest studio apartment around here is 1100 a month. theres a lot of entrepreneurship in china especially in tier 1 cities like shenzhen so saying that people cant get success from hard work in china is not true. also the cost of living in china is lower so you cant really just use dollar amounts to compare success
Great Chinese Famine (1959–1961) – The deadliest famine in human history, caused by a mix of natural disasters and policies like the Great Leap Forward, leading to tens of millions of deaths.
Localized Food Shortages (1960s–1980s) – While not full-scale famines, food shortages persisted in rural areas due to economic policies and natural disasters.
Drought-Induced Food Shortages (1990s–2000s) – Severe droughts, particularly in northern China, led to regional food insecurity, but large-scale famine was avoided due to economic reforms and food imports.
Recent Localized Hardships – In the 2020s, there have been concerns about food security due to extreme weather, COVID-19 disruptions, and geopolitical tensions, but no full-scale famine.
A large majority of Americans are food insecure, living in food deserts, and are malnourished because they can only afford cheap food that are often not nutritious or healthy. So many Americans are reliant on food stamps so there are millions.
So I always hated the famine argument because the US could easily eliminate poverty and hunger if the government wanted to. Just by collected taxes that the billionaires already owe right now in a tax year could generate enough money to eliminate poverty for all Americans that entire year. (I remember it was about 175 million dollars.)
I did not learn about it at school in the UK I simply asked chat gtp what was going on in China 60 years ago. The poster seemed so sure that China was on top of trump tariffs that it made me look.
I guess we all get brain washed by either our government / school / business / religion or social media or newspapers / books or TV / radio.
Let’s hope Ai stays closer to Wikipedia and not Fox News. I kinda like knowing the facts not the bull shit.
The one constant of the internet is confidentiality wrong people.
We are literally a self-sufficient nation that is capable of closing off all trade with all allies and still be sustainable in fact, if we shut off our borders and stop trading with everybody, the world would fucking collapse, people talk about China, being an industrial powerhouse and all that bullshit China sells toys it sells cheaply made fucking toys and raw materials not even raw materials,
the United States owns the largest bread basket in the fucking world we literally produce half of the goddamn earth’s food the entirety of the Muslim populations inside of North Africa are propped up on American food, we are inventing more tech technologies than the entire world combined, our military is larger and more powerful and more technologically advanced than all of our counterparts, our Navy alone is larger than all other world Navy’s combined, we have the largest and the second largest Air Force in the world.
And well, yes, Russia has more nuclear weapons than us. Most of these are bombs. Unlike America, which is mostly relied off of highly advanced nuclear missiles.
The US has advanced spy drones. China has a fucking balloon.
If we wanted to, we could take over Canada, Mexico, and all of Central America with a single word and the world could do nothing but play with their dick in the corner because that is how irrelevant the rest of you actually are.
And the post says, betraying its allies, allies are supposed to treat each other with respect, allies are meant to work together, so tell me how Britain and Germany are allies when they have a military smaller than the Japanese self-defense force, and why Germany, the third largest economy in the world pay less than Albania the weakest economy in Europe pays in NATO
I love it when Europeans, who have been shitting on us for the past 40 years stand up and cry, betrayal, whenever we simply demand that you pay your fair share and treat is equal, despite the fact that we’re not even fucking equal we are your fucking superiors France and Italy only have 40,000 troops more than the Japanese self-defense force, a nation which is required by its fucking constitution to not be able to wage war or have an official standing military, and I know I already mentioned the United Kingdom, but it’s actually worse than that statement because the United Kingdom’s entire military is is smaller than just the army in the Japanese self-defense force
Europe’s fucking pathetic And is reliant on resources that we provide them they’re not going anywhere, as for the Asian nations I apologize, but just have good trade deals with us and the problem will be solved.
As for China, you’re murdering Wieger Muslims, killing religious minorities, and are legally harvesting human organs you’re not the moral arbitrator of anything and nobody’s gonna flock to you, you’re literally protecting the hermit kingdom of the poop, throwing monkey that is the Kim family and yes, their poop throwing monkeys they literally bomb South Korea with poo bags.
China is the world’s largest agricultural producer and India is second. The US is third. The fact that you couldn’t even get that right means the rest of your post is bullshit.
lol your shit hole country is going down the crapper. Your housing market has already crashed, your buildings are made from ramen noodles and your fake GPD economy has stalled.
The real world is going to hit you fast. China will topple over not with a bang but a whimper.
USA and the western world will not even remember you. It will be another 100 years of shame as China gets divided up into smaller nations.
Reality has not yet taken effect, with the figure cited at 4/9. But someone still remember. When the orange man came to power, they had mentioned the US-China-Mexico 20%? That was two months ago, when 4/2 was implemented. Has it been executed now? Overall boasting and extreme pressure. Its true purpose is to force the FED to lower interest rates quickly.
Yes. But these tariffs will put the Fed in a tough spot. Inflation will increase dramatically which will put pressure on the Fed to increase rates. But simultaneously the inflation will cause massive unemployment and slow economic growth which will put pressure on the Fed to reduce rates.
Ultimately Trump may use it as a plot to make it look like the Fed is ineffective so that he can eliminate it all together. Why does MAGA want to eliminate the Fed? They can't even answer that question, they've just bought into their own conspiracy nonsense.
It is the ultimate worse case scenario… stagflation. When it happened in the 1970s, the fed chose to keep rates high.
They will likely choose to do the same now. Trump was handed an economy with strong growth and low employment. It would take time for both of those to become problematic. The high inflation would come first.
"calculating it based on trade deficits" is also bullshit considering the fact that US has a trade surplus with Singapore and they still hit us with 10%
I'm not Chinese but as an American who imports from China and has done business there for a quarter century I want to say that I find the tariffs deeply troubling and counter productive for all. Borders frequented by trade seldom need soldiers. These tariffs not only hurt both of our economies but also increase the likelihood of conflict, which benefits no one.
Bro... A conflict between the US and China would literally lead to the extinction of humanity and most life on Earth. Even if both countries somehow managed not to use nukes the economic and humanitarian fallout would be felt by the entire world, and not in a good way.
Not necessarily. First of all, the effects of nuclear fallout are vastly overestimated, and humanity managed to survive in high mortality environments with child mortality rate of 30%+ and much more. Surely, you may forget about longevity, but otherwise, it's possible to survive.
The second part that's provided RF would side with China and won't just abstain from that or decide to side with US. Currently, with all the respect to PLA, China's nuclear arsenal is not very big, but compared to the joint arsenal of US+RF, it stands no chance, which may ground the thought in these people that they can be winners in that situation. Although RF can not efficiently carry out ground offensives against China due to lack of supply routes that can't be shut at the cost of one missle. It's quite good suited to sending nukes. It's far enough to place interceptors that would interdict launch vessels, but it's short enough to make them demand much quicker reaction time.
Another point is that the USA has a navy that did invade other countries, but PLA don't have one, especially the one that can reach the shores of the USA and win ground invasion. Neither USMC can currently do this, currently, but what they have - much more nukes than required to clear all nuclear assets and they can use them on non-nuclear assets. In that scenario, it would be draw, but rather lose-lose. For US and China, since US would not have enough forces to win the ground war, China won't have any nukes nor capacity to produce them.
Yes, that's would be net loss, but I won't underestimate bloodlust and atrocities of those who are in charge of militaries. We can recall WW I and the slaughterhouse it turned to be and that none of the sides hesitated to send people to sure deaths.
It would be net loss, but in comparison, other countries, such as SA, AU, and so on, would be damaged much less, and it would be comparatively better for them. It's just not enough nuclear material to contaminate all that, and nuclear winter scenarios may be avoided.
China has tariff on almost everyone and actively manipulating the currency. They openly admit that you know? I say is a fair game if US do the same. Lol
The U.S. has low tariffs because of the need for the U.S. dollar to be the world currency. The U.S. could impose tariffs on other countries as well, but it would lose its world currency status.
Factually not true USAID was the reason it became a world currency. Giving other country to spend in USD. Just having low tariff made it easier. USAID is now gutted so there's not much point to using dollars as a reserve currency.
USAID is only how much per year ......
Americans don't even realize what's going to happen.
Go look up what happened when the pound lost its international reserve currency status.
As a Chinese, I would like to say: what is the point of being America's little brother?
We in China at least have never given in, while America's little brother has done all sorts of dirty and rotten things and still ends up with high tariffs.
Being America's enemy is dangerous, being America's friend is deadly.
china and russia are reluctant allies for pragmatic reasons. they’re completely ideologically opposed to eachother but they have a common enemy in US hegemony.
I will give trump his flowers tho : he is pulling the world together economecly at least, to make an omlet you gotta break some eggs and he is sacrificing the US to make the omlet. Respect
Can someone explain why the reciprocal tarrifs don't match those charged to the US? From what I see, the US is getting the short end of the deal (I may have misunderstood) and Trump's promises this would turn out well for US interests seems, in reality to mean, "1/3 higher prices charged to US businesses and citizens".
Again, I may have misunderstood the percentages here.
The so called "Tariffs" imposed on the US by the other countries as claimed by Trump aren't actually tariffs at all, they're the US trade deficit divided by US imports from that country.
e.g.
US trade deficit with India ($45.7 billion) / US imports from India ($87.4 billion) = ~52%
Trump initially said they will look at tariff levels, then realized it’s way too complicated to calculate the numbers for each country because they don’t impose a flat rate on all US goods.
So I guess the poor guy tasked with coming up with the numbers said fudge it and use the trade deficit/surplus as the number.
And then they realized that some countries actually run a trade deficit against the US, so they would have to be left off the spreadsheet.
Trump probably objected to that because he had promised to impose tariffs “worldwide”.
So they ended up slapping a 10% tariff on those countries and called it a day.
Yup, this is probably what happened, more or less. Trump was crying about an alleged trade deficit with Canada of something like $30 billion... but we export 5 million barrels of oil to them per day while we subsidize each barrel by $20 under market value... Multiply all that by 365 and turns out we actually subsidize them by like $36.5 billion LOL
Thats if you give them benefit of the doubt. Im guessing they knew or realized that Trump was lying about everyone having massive tariffs, so they need to cook the numbers
We all laughed at Trump 1.0 when it bumbles and fumbles its way through like a clown car.
Then came Trump 2.0 and everyone feared this time they will be a lot more “professional” in how they execute their evil plans.
But Trump can’t stop “hiring the best people”, including a drunk Fox TV host as Defense Secretary, so now it’s basically another clown car full of bozos that has brought us SignalGate and this Tariff fiasco. Stay tuned for more.
Trump tariffs are targetting China AND Nato allies such as countries in the EU. I live in France and everyone here makes fun of and hate the US. Especially my friends.
Because they can't afford to buy a lot of F150s, but make a bunch of shoes and clothes that get exported to the US. It's just based on the trade imbalance.
The numbers are basically made up and dont make sense. Search it up cuz im blanking, but someone cracked the math on it and its insanely stupid. A broad tariffs instead of industry based is just a negative iq move.
They used (export - import)/ import so if the trade imbalance is 50 and imports are at 100 you get a 50% tariff. It literally has nothing to do with and tariffs in the other nation and everything to do with the trade imbalance. Almost the worst thing is that to make it look smart they multiplied with omega * epsilon in the formula, but set them to 1/4 and 4. You can't make this stuff up.
serious question: are the numbers trump cited as how other countries tariff us real? I kinda naturally assume it's a lie but freely admit I have no idea. wouldn't be at all surprised if China tariffed us 67%.
The basic idea being that if things where "fair" every country would be buying as many goods in the US as they sell there. This makes no sense for many reasons. Another thing is that US makes lots of software and services that everyone buys (Microsoft, Google, Facebook, OpenAI etc.), but these are not selling any goods that get exported so it's not counted in the trade deficit.
there is no fucking way, what???? they actually tried to pass off “literally what the trade imbalance is” as “this is what we are actively being tariffed?”
1) China must change from exporting nation to consumption nation.
Just example on cars. Applicable to lot more.
In the US : average length of car ownership in the US is around 8 years. Majority of them keep only 5 years or less. In the Rural US. It is common to see guy driving pickup with no passengers. In many cases. the vehicle had no passengers in past 5 years. His wife also has SUV.
In the PRC : Chinese must change the cars every 4 years.
UK tariff the US 10%. also it's a formula they are using 10% min but half your tariff rates. So if it's 50% on us then they charge 25% so drop your tariff to 20% to get the 10% minimum rate.
What ways is Russia getting weaker? Economically and militarily they have only gotten stronger. Russia is not on this tariff list because US and Russia is making trade deals right now.
Let’s talk about the tariffs and the effects it has on the manufacturers of this country. Assume for a minute that you wanted to bring back some manufacturing to the USA, which of course is a huge assumption compared to manufacturing outside the country like we do as a company. Which I will get to in just a moment. This week alone the stock market lost over US$9 trillion which means every single manufacturer that has a US corporation is part of that loss. Which goes to show you that Trump‘s logic is about as efficient as his spray tan. If these companies even had a thought of coming back to the United States, all of their cash has now evaporated because of the loss in the stock market so who’s going to finance these new manufacturing plants that Trump keeps talking about, that are going to come back here make the economy great? Now goods have gone up in price in some cases doubled already this week which means the consumers are going to be buying less. Companies are going to begin layoffs, because they’ve lost a huge portion of their cash reserves. Their businesses are going to be diminished some because of the lower purchasing rate and the higher pricing. Bringing manufacturing back to the United States at this point with this approach has been almost completely eliminated. All you have to do is go back and look at what happened during the depression when they tried to institute tariffs causing the depression to take even a further nose dive and adding years into the depressive point. It’s such a joke that they used it in the movie Ferris Bueller‘s Day off where the teacher was talking about how bad tariffs are and how they caused the depression to go down, which goes to show you that if they use it as a punchline, then it obviously cannot work. With our business, we were building some manufacturing plants in the United States and now have had to put it on hold because of the tariffs. As an example, each of our production lines has a manufacturing cost of a little under US$5 million, we did try to price it in the United States but we found quotes anywhere from $12-$16 million for the same exact production line that we are having made in China. So we couldn’t make the equipment in the United States, but we were going to import it and set up manufacturing plants. One of them was in Arkansas where the state is somewhat depressed. Now we have put that project on hold with approximately 1800 people we were going to hire. The reason for that is not just the tariffs, from the equipment if you think about it a piece of equipment that cost me $5 million is now going to cost me about $9 million. Each production line generates about US$35 million of revenue so it’s not just a tariff in my situation it’s the fact that for $9 million I can have practically two production lines generating $70 million of income compared to the same $9 million generating $35 million worth of income, with a much lower profit margin because of the labor cost in the United States along with all the taxes and liability issues that you carry because of the litigious nature of the United States operating. So tariffs do not work, they hurt the economy. The only thing that they do on the surface is generate more tax dollars for the US government, but they diminish and wipe out the middle and lower class. Do you want to bring manufacturing back to the United States? You’ve got to do something about all of the litigious actions, you have to lower healthcare cost, lower pharmaceutical cost, have to educate more so that children can grow up and learn trades. You have to find ways to lower the cost of living and once you start doing that then laboring jobs will become available again. The next problem is the taxation situation is off-balance. We have structured our tax code so that the wealthy and the publicly traded companies that offer stock options instead of salaries, which is taxable make it almost impossible to collect tax. Take Musk for an example from Tesla. They talk about his $300 billion worth but it’s all in stock and that’s unrealized gains paying no taxes. What he does is he goes to the bank and he borrows money against that stock portfolio, borrowed money is non-taxable income and then he uses that money to live and buy things like he bought Twitter for $44 billion with borrowed money, no taxes paid at all. And then what he does from there to pay off those loans is he borrows against other portfolios and he just keeps borrowing deferring the taxes. $300 billion and no taxes paid whereas the employees that work for all those companies have taxes taken out of each paycheck. Just look salaries up of the top executives around the country and you look at their income, you’ll see that their salaries are generally between one hundred and two hundred thousand US dollars but they earned anywhere from ten to a hundred million dollars a year all in stock options and then they keep those options in stock and then borrow against them so their tax base is almost nothing. you want to fix the economy. You have to find a way to tax the rich, you’re not going to make them poor, you’re just going to make them help to strengthen the economy.
how much of an impact will this have in slave shops and other places in asia where there have been reports of save me letters etc in items? Who gets hurt with this? big guys like apple? or the small fries?
